There are millions of indigenous people in Colombia who live in different villages around the entire the country. Colombia 's indigenous population lives in rural areas and each of these peoples is distinguished by its own culture and history, social, political, and economic structure. In my own country, Colombia, we have a special group of indigenous people who has lived there for centuries, long before the Spaniards arrived in South America. Yet, this group of people is still being discriminated against by mainstream Colombia society and should be better understood and appreciated and perhaps helped to become more integrated into society. The Wayuu people are one of the most influential tribes because they arrived around hundred 50 BC and they moved around through the entire country. In addition, this Indigenous group represents most of the national indigenous population in the country. In the Wayuu community there is a persona who translate their language to Spanish because the tribe has its own traditional language that is called “Wayuunaki”. Their languages makes them essential for the country because this should be consider cultural heritage of humanity. Allowing resolve their conflicts peacefully has been part of the Wayuu tradition during generations, so this is must be emphasized because in Colombia we must learn from this since today we do not have. Although they are discriminated against by the society, they have a great deal to contribute to society. Wayuu are important because each of them give us traditions, customs, languages, ways of dressing, eating and unique thinking. I have always been interested in learning about their culture. I think that they have for example, an essential way of thinking and it is great because we are able to learn it. However they have their own laws that have been conserved by generations and we should know and learn them. Also, I like their mode of coexistence since, they are so peaceful and they feel committed with the earth. It is a fact that nowadays the people don’t believe. Throughout ancient history, many indigenous tribes and cultures have shown a common trait of being hunter/gatherer societies, relying solely on what nature had to offer. The geographical location influenced all aspects of tribal life including, spirituality, healing philosophy and healing practices. Throughout the history of Canada the indigenous population of the country have been voiceless. They have been both suppressed and oppressed by the Federal and various Provincial governments within Canada. All over the world, people have always sought for power, they have struggled to defend their culture; they have worked beyond imaginable to obtain economic prosperity and political freedom. A matter of fact equality is something that nowadays we are still fighting to obtain. Education has always been the key to power. In the twenty-first century education means a way to obtain the American dream, in other words, to achieve success. As a social group of African descent, they have common historical experiences, with a collective ancestry, a shared culture, which is what gives them a sense of uniqueness. Native Americans suffered hundreds of years of violence, discrimination and forced relocation from their land, during the European invasion of North America. After the Europeans arrive, Indian culture soon became endangered, a culture which developed distinctively shaped tools, sewing needles, clothing, jewelry and weapons. They held strong their own higher cultural beliefs, and legends, retold to them for many generations. During the era of colonization in the United States, Native Americans were subjected to years of despair, of which includes ravaging diseases, conversion to Christianity, European technology, and procurement of native land.
Indigenous people of the world have historically been and continue to be pushed to the margins of society. Similarly, women have experienced political, social, and economical marginalization. For the past 500 years or so, the indigenous peoples of México have been subjected to violence and the exploitation since the arrival of the Spanish. The xenophobic tendencies of Spanish colonizers did not disappear after México’s independence; rather it maintained the racial assimilation and exclusion policies left behind by the colonists, including gender roles (Moore 166) . México is historically and continues to be a patriarchal society. So when the Zapatista movement of 1994, more formally known as the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación National (Zapatista Army of National Liberation; EZLN) constructed a space for indigenous women to reclaim their rights, it was a significant step towards justice. The Mexican government, in haste for globalization and profits, ignored its indigenous peoples’ sufferings. Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico, consisting of mostly indigenous peoples living in the mountains and country, grew frustration with the Mexican government. It was in that moment that the Zapatista movement arose from the countryside to awaken a nation to the plight of indigenous Mexicans. Being indigenous puts a person at a disadvantage in Mexican society; when adding gender, an indigenous woman is set back two steps. It was through the Zapatista movement that a catalyst was created for indigenous women to reclaim rights and autonomy through the praxis of indigeneity and the popular struggle.

Cultural competence is a skill essential to acquire for healthcare providers, especially nurses. We view them like gods, where America didn’t exist until they came along; and, once they finally made it through that first thanksgiving turkey, then only good ever came about because of them. When I first came into this class, introduction to indigenous studies, I was uncertain of what to expect but really interested. Part taking in my major towards history and noticed this class I immediately pounced on it as I was quite interested and very pleased. Indigenous Knowledge (IK) can be broadly defined as the knowledge and skills that an indigenous (local) community accumulates over generations of living in a particular environment. IK is unique to given cultures, localities and societies and is acquired through daily experience. It is embedded in community practices, institutions, relationships and rituals.
