Backpacking is something a lot of people do in the northwest. There is something thrilling about carrying your whole life on your back and tromping through the woods forgetting about most of the things you left back where all the civilization is. You have a group of your closest friends with you. You know they are your greatest friends because they are willing to follow you into the woods where things like bears and big cats live. But just because backpacking is something a lot of people chose this to be one of their hobbies doesn’t mean we are all responsible.
Last spring I talked a friend of mine, my brother and my brothers friend to go to the Hoh Rainforest in the middle of it’s rainy season for a weekend backpacking trip. For those who

Because we got tot the trail head around 10pm we decided to stop at the three mile mark where there was a pretty good sized campsite right along side the Hoh river. We ran into some deer that were not happy we were there and they did not seem scared of us to say the least. We ignored them anyway and set up camp in the dark and tried to get a fire going. We were still passing around the flask having a good time. Unfortunately no matter how hard we worked to keep the fire going the rain kicked in and prevented the fire from being a fire. According to the weather report the next day was supposed to be less …show more content…
To prevent our clothes from getting soaked we just went in our thermal underpants. We got lost a few times and walked along the river but eventually stumbled back to camp without killing ourselves. Me and my buddy got in our tent, but he decided to take a leak first. All you could hear was a few stumbles and then a loud thud. My brother yelled out “did you fall?” and you heard a faint voice respond “yeah”. He got back up and you could here a few more stumbles, then there was a good amount of silence and then another loud thud. At this point I thought he’d never make it back so I got up and saw him laying there kind of in the same position you would see a cat playing with a ball of yarn. I grabbed him under his arms and pulled him back to the
People often misjudge the wild, and feel that they can survive with little to no equipment. Such As Christopher Johnson McCandless, where he had strongly in his mind that he was going to Alaska. he goes, but he does with nothing but his car and his .22 Rifle. He had graduated From Emory University- which has an acceptance rate of 26.8 percent, it’s
We hit a down hill point so we grabbed drift wood. It would save man power and be faster to sled down. The rest helped Landon out the most because he was the smallest so he didn 't have energy left to use. But this refreshed him so we could keep going. Time was not on are side. The only thing keeping us alive was the fact that if we got out we would be the first ones ever to make it out not dead. It was about the hottest point in the day now and we had to find shade or we would get to dehydrated and die. We drank all the water we had just to fine out that we had a under ground stream below
In 1961, the US Freedom Rides was quite a significant event that is still remembered by many Americans and African-Americans today. It was the time when racial discrimination and segregation had existed and has had an immense effect and impact on African-Americans. Yet, it had ended after a lot of hard work protesting, campaigning in different areas of America and thanks to some key events that had also helped along with these including the Birmingham Campaign and Martin Luther King Jr’s activism. This event of the United States however is a lot similar to events that had occurred in Australia at the time and is considered to be an inspiration to Aboriginal activism and protest in Australia. The event that took place for the Aboriginal activism
In a time where the general population is overweight and obsessed with technology, there isn’t much time for the outside world. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson is about two corpulent men on a journey to walk the Appalachian Trail. At first their tale seems unlikely because of their weight and the fact that they have never hiked a day in their lives. However, it quickly turns into an inspiring story that we, as people, should use to spark our own adventure in the great unknown. Bryson writes A Walk in the Woods to encourage people to live a little and experience the great outdoors, to meet interesting people in it, and to encounter the enthralling wildlife that resides on the Appalachian Trail.
There are many factor that determines your survival in the wilderness. To survive, you not only need enough and correct supplies but you also need luck and to stay calm. In the story “To Build a Fire” the man and the dog was trying to cross the Yukon Territory of northern Canada and he was traveling under freezing cold weather. To him, fifty degrees below zero simply meant a danger of frostbite and the need for warm clothes. It did not lead him to think about how vulnerable he was in this frozen wilderness. Nor did it lead him to have humility about his place in the universe. At last he end up dying in the wilderness. In the short story, “To Build a Fire” by Jack London, the main character, “the man,” was responsible for his situation because
I did not want to leave. I had been here for ten days and I had established relationships and friendships with people from everywhere and all sorts of backgrounds. We all sat in the car preparing to leave. Every single one of us, my parents, brother and me, sitting in silence. Wanting to cry, waiting for someone to say the first word. Each of us had learned something that trip. For me, this experience had taught me what gratefulness was, the impact a good attitude has, what a servant looks like, and really how the relationships we make with our life is the most important aspect about life.
5 Things the Beginner Hiker Should Know While most people have gone out for an easy hike at some point in their lives, hiking on more advanced trails is a much different story. Therefore, it is important to keep some things in mind before taking on more technical trails. How much time you have for the hike, your physical ability, as well as what gear you wear and bring along are all crucial elements in the preparation process.
Wilderness survival is a dying art. Out of my friends, a few others and I are the only ones that know how to survive. Back in the day, wilderness survival was an everyday struggle. If you knew it, you lived to worry about tomorrow. If your didn’t know it, you didn’t half to worry about tomorrow. If you threw a random number of people into a survival situation, most of them would become casualties instead to survivors.
I awoke to the sun piercing through the screen of my tent while stretching my arms out wide to nudge my friend Alicia to wake up. “Finally!” I said to Alicia, the countdown is over. As I unzip the screen door and we climb out of our tent, I’m embraced with the aroma of campfire burritos that Alicia’s mom Nancy was preparing for us on her gargantuan skillet. While we wait for our breakfast to be finished, me and Alicia, as we do every morning, head to the front convenient store for our morning french vanilla cappuccino. On our walk back to the campsite we always take a short stroll along the lake shore to admire the incandescent sun as it shines over the gleaming dark blue water. This has become a tradition that we do every morning together
This essay is the respond to the Local Council Member who has wrong idea about a common archetype of adventure tourist. This misconception based on ignorance of current tourism industry, could potentially be a dangerous for local economy and development. The local authority must be well informed about present conditions with the tourism market, before they will make a far reaching decisions about the development direction in this industry. Currently, there are many organisations whose monitoring an international tourism business and this knowledge supposed to be good use for our common good.
Ecotourism seems to have developed "in the womb" of the environmental movement in the 1970s and 1980s (Blamey R., 2001). Increasing environmental interest coupled with an emerging disavow for mass tourism has led to an increased demand for experiences based on the nature of alternative tourism. At the same time, countries have begun to realize that nature-based tourism is a means of accumulating foreign exchange and providing less destructive use of resources than alternative resources such as carpentry and agriculture (Blamey R., 2001). By the middle of the 1980s, a number of such countries had identified ecotourism as a way to achieve and maintain development.
Going on a road trip with my family means the world to me. We drove to another state during summer vacation, and it was by far the best road trip I have ever been on. My family and I were able to go to many fun places. We ate so many exotic and delicious foods as well. Yet most importantly, I spent time with my family and their friends. It was the day when my family and I went to California for our summer vacation.
The world is a magnificent place that’s full of life and new places. Places that are waiting to be walked upon and viewed by the eye’s of travelers. To make new memories and go places that is beyond the walls of reality and new pathways of life. To truly experience the wonders that the world has to offer can be expressed by the life of one single person, setting off into the world to gain a higher purpose about the world. Traveling individually enables people to broaden their minds and accumulate new ideas and new experiences both nationally and internationally. By setting off into the world a person has the ability to learn so many new things, but also find so much about themselves while in the process of traveling.
There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work. It is the best educational experience you could give yourself. You see how the world works in a way no one can teach you. Seeing different cultures and people help build the person you want to be. If you are a traveler the world influences you, because when traveling, you see the good and the bad, and you learn from the right and the wrong. I am very lucky that I am able to be a traveler and see this
I was so ecstatic to go on this field trip and so was everyone else. Of course I knew why, everyone loves field trips. Everyone that had seen the one man show reported that it was impeccable performance. Furthermore, I was adrenalized because I didn’t have to do any work. Before the show, all I thought was that it would be a normal bus ride. One that would be loud, but everyone minded their own business.
