I’m Khavel and I’m from the island/country of Jamaica and presently residing in the state of New York. This is my final semester at ESC, pursuing my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Development. This world is filled with a vast amount of different unique people. I would like to understand why people are the way they are. I want to know what factors contribute to shaping our lives and make us who we are and how we behave. I’m pretty much intrigued by how we humans develop and how it relates to our developmental changes during the different stages throughout our lifespan. I am presently working in the health care field where I have come across different illnesses, hence, I would like to amplify my knowledge to be better able to understand behaviors
and assist in caring for such individuals. In a sense…to also better understand myself. Participation in this course fits well into my degree plan and area of study and also owing to the fact that it fulfills my need for advanced level credits earned in this course. After consulting my mentor, I was advised that this course makes my quest that much closer. I hope to gain research knowledge that helps me better understand human development, the needs of different demographic groups and the issues surrounding the lifespan development on a whole. This will give me the necessary tools I need to adequately perform my duties as an adult educator. Due to the fast increase in technology, the work place and society demands the importance of continuos learning (possible through research). The ideas and practices that I possess and employ will be the pedestal from which I listen to the points of view of others and accept that there are many - none of which may be wrong once it can be proven.
In high school, I was part of SkillsUSA, a national organization that heavily focused on Career and Technical Education for students in high school and in college. It was my junior year in high school and I had become fascinated with this organization. There are many types of competitions such as cosmetology or architecture and engineering where students can showcase their talents along with what they have learned in school. My range of skills allowed me to compete in different types of computer and leadership competitions. This led me to many different experiences that have greatly influenced my personality and have allowed me to learn that there are many important aspects to have a good character. Having won some competitions and lost others has given me experiences that allowed me to improve myself and to truly understand how some parts of our personality are important.
The process of change during the human lifespan is referred to as human development. This process is studied and observed by Developmental Psychologists to understand how different experiences in our life alter our course of development. The Biopsychosocial perspective analyzes how biological, psychological, and social factors affect our developmental course that we call life.
Many different forms of medicine are currently practiced in the world. In fact, as our text states, “in all cultures, some people have become recognized as having special abilities to treat and diagnose health problems.” (Miller 107) Without argument, phytomedicinal and supernatural healers are two forms of medical treatment that have been around for longer than any other, regardless of culture. It has been estimated that shamanism has been practiced for over ten thousand years (Tyson 3). Native American and Celtic healers are often known as shamans.

Human development is a complex process with a series of stages that progressively proceeds in a more or less similar manner among different individuals. Right from conception to death, humans are in the process of developing. Different studies that have been conducted on human development show clear-cut similarities and differences among individuals of different ages, gender, ethnical backgrounds, organizations and many other aspects of concern. Individuals and groups of people have really devoted their time to trying to understand the consistency and changes throughout the lifespan. Psychosocial development throughout the Life Cycle theory (sometimes known as individual development theory) proposes that each individual has the ability to master their environment at all stages of life (Coady & Lehman, 2008; Hutchison, 2008). The theory had its beginnings in Freud’s psychosexual stages of child development; however Erikson is responsible for laying the groundwork for the theory as it is known today, by proposing an epigenetic model of human development (Hutchison, 2008).
A human being begins life as a single cell. This cell changes throughout its life time to develop into a unique individual. Human development is the scientific study of the patterns associated with this change in accordance with the internal and external conditions of its existence (Papalia, Olds & Feldman, 2009). In exploring human development, there are three key areas that need to be addressed. These comprise of physical development, cognitive development and finally psychosocial development. Within each of these areas, it is apparent that most address three key issues. Firstly, is the development process continuous or a series of discontinuous stages? Secondly is there one path of development characteristics or does the individual take an active or passive role resulting in several possible paths and directions? Thirdly how do the genetic or environmental factors influence development? “Theorists such as Erikson and Piaget assume that developmental change occurs in distinct, discontinuous stages and all individuals follow the same sequence and order”(Hoffnung, Seifert, Smith, Hine, Ward & Quinn, 2010, p.34). While Brofenbrenner’s, ecological systems theory emphasises the broad range of situations and contexts in which development occurs making it a continuous process guided by the individual (Hoffnung,et al., 2010, p.35).
The psychology field is a scientific field that deals with human emotion, motivation, behavior and cognition. It is subdivided into various specializations that are concerned with psychological science while others deal with the application of science in handling real world problems. According the American Psychological Association, there are over 54 unique subdivisions in the field of psychology. These areas focus on different areas which have numerous sub-disciplines. Such sub-disciplines of psychology often display a vast diversity through covering various inquiry areas. Some of the areas covered include; how genetics contributes to abnormal behaviors and how a person’s environment is likely to affect his or her personality. The major concepts of psychology on the other hand deals with varying aspects of people’s lives which are influenced by psychology’s sub-disciplines which in turn reflects the diverse nature of the psychology field (Helms & Rogers, 2010).
For my reflection paper I chose to write about chapter 9 that talks about lifespan development. This chapter grabbed my attention and I found it most interesting. In the textbookit discusses how there are certain factors that uncontrollably make us who we are. Those factorsare "unique combination of genes you inherited from your biological mother and father. Another is the historical era during which you grew up. Your individual development has also been shaped by the cultural, social, and family contexts within which you were raised." (Pg.352) The patterns of our lives are because of developmental psychology. Development is the process of growing, forming or creating into something slightly more advanced than before. Development starts during conception and ends during death. Development consists of three developmental domains which are, physical development, cognitive development, and psychosocial development. Each of which involve some form of growing or changing including the changes of moods throughout the lifespan. The Nature versus Nurture concept are issues that are found in stages of development as well. Nature which relates to the behavior that is inherited by genetics, and Nurture which relates to the behavior that is inherited or learned from the environment. Human development can be divided into three major areas: physical, cognitive, and affective. Physical development pertains to growth and change of the human body over time (Charlesworth, 2011). Cognitive development involves how learning takes place (Charlesworth, 2011). Affective development deals with the psychological maturation of an individual (Charlesworth, 2011). The nature versus nurture debate seeks to establish the extent of the role that inherited and environmental factors play in a person’s development in each of these areas.
I see psychology as a complicated jigsaw of human behaviour, thought and emotion. My desire is to collect the thousands of pieces and create them into a map to follow to understanding psychology. The subject is newly established with many ground breaking discoveries; this excites me and makes me curious to find out more. The diversity of the topic leaves so many unanswered questions about the complexity of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour. Psychology is academically challenging however it also inspires me to want to learn more about the nature and outcomes of certain behaviour and how these behaviours interact and under what conditions they arise. I have a particular interest in understanding mental illness- growing up with a grandparent with severe depression and psychosis, has exposed me to how fragile such a complex organ can be from a young age. I aspire to use findings within the subject to improve outcomes and make a difference to the lives of people who suffer from issues that arise from mental conditions. A younger sibling has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia and struggles with pronunciation of certain words; this has sparked my interest in how the brain develops and language acquisition in children. I often help him with this homework which has left me with many questions of why children learn and process information at different rates; how can one child find something so trivial
What intrigues me most about individual development and behavior is the interaction between a person’s biology and their psychological state. I have come to realize that all of these forces work together to shape the development of an individual. Health care professionals should approach development analysis in a multidisciplinary
Developmental Psychology is an area which studies how we as humans change over the period of our life span. The majority of the focus is broken into three categories: cognitive, physical and social change. The creation of who we are today comes down to the everlasting debate of nature versus nurture. This ongoing debate of what makes us who we are and which one is the driving force in development may be so simple that it’s complex. Rather than it being a conflict of nature “versus” nurture, it is very well possible both play an equal part in the development of us as humans. In the beginning, we start off as single cell in the form of a zygote. In that moment, where the DNA begin to form and the first seconds of life take place, the zygote is already experiencing interaction with the womb. In the process of determining why we are who are it is better to look more at the interactions of nature and nurture, analyzing how both have shaped us.
There have been a lot of theories written on how we develop from birth to adulthood; the basis of it is explained within the three domains, physical, cognitive and social – emotional development and although they seem like three separate areas they in fact relate closely together.
