I believe Erickson’s phenomenological theory concerning the eight stages of psychosocial development was inherently designed to be very simplistic, yet impetus. Not only does Erickson’s work expand from Freud’s psychosexual stages of development but it has improved and broadened the concept and understanding (my opinion) of childhood development from a conscious perspective, thereby betiding core conflicts as a framework to support therapists for making appropriate interventions. Erickson’s stages seem to have built upon a systematic biological foundation of development. It makes sense. Here is where the counselor can educate or refer the parents to parenting classes such as we do at the courthouse to teach and educate on the importance of maybe communication and spending quality time with the infant. Also, for those melancholy temperament parents, a great intervention could be addressing the fear aspect of intimacy and the lack thereof. Second stage is the toddler stage (autonomy vs. shame). This stage can produce problems if parents refuse to or just do not understand the importance of setting boundaries. The toddler then deals exhibits tantrums and disobedience. Also in this stage if the parent is too controlling or overbearing refusing to allow the child to develop independence the toddler will exhibit shame vs. autonomy. In this case the therapist can communicate on establishing limits and avoid dealing with tantrums, disrespect and or being overbearing as parents. Stage Three reflects preschool years (initiative vs. guilt). Here the child is more independent, energetic and learn social skills (positive or negative) and their roles. This crucial stage deals with the youth begins recognizing his or her identity. Therapist can teach the parents how to be good listeners and be mindful of their reactions to the youth’s emotional needs. The five stage is the adolescent (identity vs. role) Her the youth is more in tune with their identity or struggle with acceptance and interpersonal conflict if the parent neglects to listen, give room for growth (freedom), teach responsibilities. If a youth is unable to deal with the stressors of maturing, they will indeed transfer a lot of emotions to others. The therapist will have the opportunity to conduct family sessions that will aide the youth and parents in learning active listening skills, becoming sensitive to the youth establishing or managing the challenges of growing into their identity. The sixth stage depicts young adulthood (intimacy vs. isolation). Youth will struggle here if again there was a lack of love rendered from parents and subsequently they will fail to build intimate relationship. This is a theory that describes stages in which an individual should pass as they are going through life. His theory includes nine stages all together. The original theory only included eight stages but Erikson‘s wife found a ninth stage and published it after his death. The nine stages include: trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, integrity vs. despair, and hope and faith vs. despair (Crandell and Crandell, p.35-36)).
According to Eric Erikson, there are eight different social stages a person must go through as they mature. Each stage has a positive characteristic and a negative characteristic. If positive characteristics are fulfilled then their future will look good. So to what extent can the lack of reinforcement to the positive characteristics of Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development effect you? The effects can be quite horrifying. However, I think the most challenging stage is Puberty. In this stage children’s emotions are all over the place. They are trying to discover who they are and sometimes this means they have a different plan than what their parents want. They have more problems with authority figures than any other age group which leads to causing parents grief from reasons like car accidents, arrests, drinking and driving, pregnancy, bullying, arguing, and laziness. I think all parents should be aware of counseling and the benefits from it. It is okay to need help in raising children. Parents need to know that they are going to get angry with their children at times and that it is okay as long as they deal with their children in acceptable ways. The intention of article that I examined, as it related to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, was to “examine Parent-Child Interaction Therapy’s effectiveness for increasing positive parenting skills, reducing children’s behavior problems, reducing parents’ stress, and improving the parent-child relationship with a sample of children typically considered in need of attachment-focused treatment.” (Allen, Timmer, Urquiza, 2014, pg. 334). Psychosocial development is development on a social realm. Psychosocial development is how one develops their mind, maturity level, and emotions over the course of one’s life. The rate of development depends on different factors such as biological processes as well as environmental factors. A man named Erik Erikson who was a psychoanalyst who believed that early childhood successes and failures were responsible for influencing later developmental stages developed this theory. Erik Erikson’s eight Stages of man; politically known as the eight stages of psychosocial development. He promotes social interactions as a motivation to personality development. Erickson studied stages from the beginning of the life cycle to the later stages of life. Erickson was trained under the famous Sigmund Freud. His belief was that it wasn’t only sex that motivated personality development. Social interaction and a growing sense of competence is the key to it all. Because his beliefs differed from the beliefs of Freud, Erikson quickly began to work on his own. Erickson has focused on many different eras of psychological development.
Erikson’s theory emphasized how both earlier and later experiences are proportionately important in the person’s development and how personality develops beyond puberty. But, Freud would argue that most development occurs during the earlier period of an individual’s life. Freud’s psychosexual stages comprised of five stages that ends in puberty. Erikson’s first few psychosocial stages are somewhat similar to that of Freud’s stages one to three but Erikson further expands his developmental stages to eight, covering old age.
