The speaker cites evidence that illustrates the effect of the current legislation on people, such as a sharecropper that was put off his farm for voting, or a maid who makes only five dollars a week while the family she is working for makes a hundred thousand dollars every year. Basically, Lewis is trying to speak out for the people and show the system that these citizens should not be living in a world where they are treated like they are worth less than others. The evidence highlights that although it is a free state, it would not be considered a state of equal rights and for most of the people in the nation, it would influence them to make a stand. Additionally, in paragraph four Lewis declares, “We must have a good FEPC bill” (para 4).
He demands this because the employment and treatment of people was not the same since some were paid far less than those of another race. During that time, the law system was not functioning properly as it did not care for dark- skinned people. In other words, equality meant nothing to the government and higher positioned people, but it meant everything to the people who were not treated with the rights they deserved. The speaker includes this fact to emphasize the problem that is happening within the nation. American independence was incomplete because they still discriminated the people that were also a part of the nation.
There are three main parts of his argument. The first part of his argument delves into the nature of man and government. This part investigates the role of natural vs. implied rights and it’s role in the creation of a government. The second part of his argument deals with the “concurrent” vs. “numerical” majority, which deals with the ideals of a majority against the ideals of a minority and a numerical faction. The third part of his argument deals with liberty, rights, power and security. I believe this part is most crucial because not everyone is implied to be free, but rather people need to deserve their freedom. This can’t be true, because people on American history because of their race and gender were not allowed to live by some of theories granted in the Disquisition of Government.
Stanton argues many valid points with significant impact. Throughout her speech, she uses many examples of logical appeals. She states, “The question is now: how shall we get possession of what rightfully belongs to us?” In this quote, Stanton is agitating the question of when women are going to get not only the rights they deserve, but also the equality they demand. She is disgracing the rules that they live under, and questioning when things will be set right. She also argues, “All white men in this country have the same rights, however they may differ in mind, body, or estate.” All white men in America at this time had freedom no matter what they owned or what their background. They could be rich, wealthy businessmen or poor country farmers, and as much as they differed in society standards, they all shared one common thing: their rights. She is making an emotional appeal to the women of the country, and exposing the anger of the unfair situation the women are stuck in. One of the key phrases she repeats is, “The right is ours.” Stanton repeats this short, yet powerful, phrase in order to get her message through. The institution of slavery, from the year 1830 to 1860, created a divide between the northern and southern regions of the United States. Southerners, who relied on slaves to maintain their plantations, supported the institution, as it was a major part of their economy. Meanwhile, northerners, many of whom depended on slave produced cotton for textile mills and goods for the shipping industry, were divided on the slave issue, as some saw it as a blessing while the abolitionists saw it as a horrific institution. Overall, attitudes toward the institution of slavery, due to a variety of causes, differed in the varying regions in the United States from 1830 to 1860.
“There must be the position of superior and inferior” was a statement by Lincoln which formed the basis of discrimination towards black Americans as it highlighted the attitudes of white Americans. There is no doubt the civil rights era was a time of progressive movement towards equality. With limited help from the government and racial tensions still high, made integration almost impossible to work with making civil rights passed. But big leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and Bayard Rustin revolutionized the way blacks should think about how to enhance the black community. Each leader had their own approach to solving the black community’s racial problems. King prefers to take a peaceful protest, while X was more inclined to separation from the whites, and Rustin’s approach was more of enhancing the black community through economic prosperity.

Initially, men, because of their physical superiority, were given the prospects many women never even dreamt to have. Greatly enough, this generation has done an exceptional job in the challenge of overcoming sexism and inequality. However, will this search for equality ever end? When can we say we have created an equal race of men and women? The fact of the matter is that it is truly impossible to have equality between the sexes because of predisposed circumstances that are not easily controllable in the slightest bit.
