The need for environmental engineers is growing as we continue to change as a society and build more. Environmental engineers work with architects and contractors while buildings are being constructed to ensure that sites are adhering to all environmental codes. As a career it has many similarities with environmental architecture. The engineer has to be able to see the project as a finished product and as it is at any point of the construction process. Environmental architects are less worried about the codes that have to be followed so engineers go back behind the architects to make sure all of the codes are being followed. The Department of Environmental Quality has set strict guidelines on environmental conservation. Engineers have to follow these codes when helping to design the landscape of buildings. My decision to become an electrical engineer was not a decision I took too long ago. These parts of the scientific method must be written clearly, so that others can recreate and test out a device or project. There is no life without protecting the source that sustains us. Even though I have only been alive for seventeen years, it has been long enough to see many negative environmental changes. Since I was born that population has grown by over one billion people causing deforestation, loss of wildlife, increased pollution to both air and water, and even superbugs. However, I have also been able to see extremely positive results such as an increase in the research and implementation of renewable resources. The reason I am so motivated to study environmental science is because I know that change is possible. Those who study environmental science and study have the ability to help reduce, and possible reserve, some of the damage that has been done to the environment while at the same time, helping to advance the well-being of our fellow humans.
In the most basic sense, engineering means “making things happen.” It is the practical application of science and math, the two subjects I am most passionate about, to solve everyday problems. It opens up a world of opportunity to create innovative technology that influences many aspects of people’s lives, this giving an individual the power to make a difference. While I am deeply interested in the subjects that are the foundation of engineering, in addition I have many other personal reasons for pursuing civil engineering in specific.
