For this evaluation to be completely effective I will take a stance and be completely honest. It has been over ten years since the last time I attended school. Which means I graduated in 2007. When I was in school we did not focus on MLA format what so ever, and even if we did the chances of me are remembering it are very slim. Coming back to school I breezed through my English 101 class and was told that I only need a minor understanding of MLA format. As I sat in on my first day of English 102 I thought to myself how wrong my teacher was. I remember sitting through the lecture thinking I cannot pay attention to this style of teaching. I have to be honest, and say that I wasn’t too interested in writing any of the papers. My main focus was on having perfect MLA format. I feel that piece really took away from the content of the paper. I love writing. To write a creative piece about life or anything like that is a passion of mine. My favorite essay to write was the scar story. For myself, it is easier and more rewarding to write about something that is of a personal nature. That translates into the best writing, something that is from the heart is stuff that people want to actually read. Isn’t that why we write, for people to read what we write? I also feel there was not much guidance on how to write the papers or a proper layout of the expectation on the content. However, maybe that is the point of English 102, to have less instruction time and more time to think on your own. I think I was most proud of my concept paper on ADHD. It flowed the best out of all my papers and it was the easiest to research. Also, it was my first full attempt at trying MLA format and it didn’t go as bad as I thought it was going to go. The audience for writing project one: summary and response will be my classmates and my instructor, Avon Waters. I am writing this for English 111 – an online Ivy Tech college course. This is the first writing project of four for semester one. The assignment is to select a core reading resource from the group listed and perform a summary and response style paper, using proper APA formatting and introducing the concept of a situation analysis. The core reading piece I have selected is one that personally interested me, as it deals heavily with history and facts versus opinions and controversy. Other than learning how to argue (my boyfriend loves my new ability) I learned how to source my research using MLA format. This new skill is tremendously important in college because most professors, if not all, require their papers to be submitted using MLA format. Throughout my upcoming years at Valencia and then The University of Central Florida I will find writing papers significantly easier because sourcing will be practically second nature. In class we were taught how to use the in-text reference throughout our papers, build our own citation and how to set up our work cited page. Although in high school we used the MLA format for papers, prior to taking this class I hadn’t noticed how many small details go into the actual citation, the authors name is last name then first name, the commas must be in the proper place, page numbers etc. In some classes you “learn” how to do things however it is only stored in short term memory because you don’t consider it an important attribute or useful for future classes. Personally, I made sure I knew how to do MLA, every aspect of it, I reviewed the rules, did my assignments, and then reviewed my assignments in order to store this new skill in long term memory. By doing this I have successfully transferred the information to long term memory and made it into a skill.
Consistency, is what essay formats seek to provide for readers. Without essay formats, readers may find themselves lost in the style of the author’s text rather than contemplating the ideas and thoughts that the author wants the reader to acknowledge. However, why is it that there are so many different essay formats? Wouldn’t it be simpler to just have one universal essay format? The two most widely used formats, MLA and APA, both have great degree of similarity as well as very distinct differences. Most of the similarities exist due to their effectiveness. On the other hand, the two formats’ distinct differences such as in-text citations or setting aside a whole page for a title, serve to strengthen the clarity of ideas within a field of study the author is trying to convey. Different formats exist due to the specific necessities fields of study require in order to convey their ideas to the reader.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.

As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
I guess I was very confused about formatting in general. In my refutation paper, I listed several sources, but none of them were cited within the text. The formatting was also not up to MLA standards. The grade I received on the MLA quiz also was not good. I worked on this my using the MLA website for help when I needed help. The book also helped quite a bit as well. The improvement is evident in the Problem/Solution paper. The margins are up to standards and everything is formatted correctly. I’m glad I have worked and improved with MLA. I will be using MLA a lot throughout the rest of my college career and it is very important that I know how to use
William Golding , the author of The Lord of the flies believes that evil resides in all human beings. The Lord of the Flies begins softly but nearing the end everything turns upside down. But would the world be the same way it is today without societal structure and rules? Only through societal structure, rules and order will humans be thought morality/principal and proper behaviour. The Lord of the Flies demonstrates what society would look like/resort to without any rules or guidance for man to follow. Others might believe this is true because of natural evil and actions done by individuals, a comparison through savagery and civilization, and certain truths in the world that are evil.
The purpose of this assignment is to explain the impact of English language learners in the classroom. As a foreign student, English language learner in the United States faces multiple challenges for achieving academic success. To successfully complete a task, they need to master both English as a language and how it is used in core content classes especially when they are an adult. When trying to assist in instructing English language learners, they usually have many concepts and language abilities that they need to master, as do the teachers that are trying to teach them. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor.
Overall, English 102 was much harder than English 101 because the essays were not analyzing a topic once and forgetting about it. Writing about the same thing multiple times is challenging when you use all your good ideas in the first few papers. The ideas and subject matter that make up English 102 is in no way hard; however, it was very difficult to write the papers that are required in the class. Nevertheless, I think I would retake the class because it did help me learn how to write in new genres and use new writing techniques.
English 102 have opened a new point of view in my mind. I discovered how to do research in a different language and realized that my brain was covered with dust, this is the first time after 5 years that I’m a former student and trying to get a second degree. Before I registered this class, I looked up a website called “Grade your Teacher” and the comments about the instructor were positive, so I decided to take it. At the beginning of this class (back to September 23rd) and after receiving a 0.0 as a grade for my first essay, I knew this was going to be hard, and I had no idea about how I was going to pass this research course.
The desolate and chaotic conditions of the society can have a significant amount of influence on the development on a certain character of a novel. For instance, at the time the novel, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky was written, the conditions of the setting, was very chaotic and was in turmoil. Crime and Punishment took place in Russia, where Russia during the time Crime and Punishment was written was suffering due to economical downfalls and failure of the poor reforms of Tsar Alexander II; ultimately transforming Russia into a poverty-stricken country. The failure of Alexander’s reforms affected much of setting in which Crime and Punishment was written in, which ultimately contributed in character development of Raskolinokov. This is evident through the use of metaphor, which Dostoevsky uses to compare the state of the country to Raskolinkov’s apartment.
