Course overview essay: Writing & Research Process English 102 have opened a new point of view in my mind. I discovered how to do research in a different language and realized that my brain was covered with dust, this is the first time after 5 years that I’m a former student and trying to get a second degree. Before I registered this class, I looked up a website called “Grade your Teacher” and the comments about the instructor were positive, so I decided to take it. At the beginning of this class (back to September 23rd) and after receiving a 0.0 as a grade for my first essay, I knew this was going to be hard, and I had no idea about how I was going to pass this research course. One of the first concepts that I learned was “marginalia” which –according to the teacher’s explanation- means to take random notes about something to think later. This class was described as a journey in which we wouldn’t know the results till the end of the quarter, and even though it wasn’t easy to make it, here I am. In the beginning of this semester, English 1302 seemed as though it would be the subject that would be the toughest for me to pass. The pace, the work load and everything in between seemed overwhelming for me. As time proceeded to pass, the course didn’t seem as overpowering. By taking the work one step at a time, it simply became another step to achieve the overall goal of this first half of the semester. I have made improvements as well as learned lessons from my mistakes made along the way.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
Over the course of this semester, I have progressed as a writer. Picking up new skills and dropping old bad habits has transformed me into a much better writer than when I entered the English 101. Entering this class, the only English classes that I took were mandatory high school classes all four years. In these classes, however, content was focused on reading novels, poems, and literature. There was usually only one major writing assignment each year, which was a research paper on a topic that was given by our teachers. Although there was some writing involved in these classes, most of the class time was spent on improving my reading and comprehension skills. A small part of the class was given to improve my skills as a writer and even a researcher. In English 101, however, most of the class time was spent on writing and more specifically, academic writing. This includes doing proper research, picking a worthy topic to write about, correctly analyzing sources, and developing a well-rounded, complete paper. I have progressed a writer over the semester by effectively integrating and analyzing sources better, and being more specific with my words.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
he Spring Quarter is almost over! With this in mind, I am writing you a letter to reflect on my experiences in English 102 section HY1. Having previously completed The University of Washington Composition 131 class at the high school, I found multiple connections between the classes. Both classes focused on time management and self-improvement. The major difference, and the thing I really struggled with, was there was only one peer review. In my previous class, we had an extremely longer amount of time to revise our papers and typically had two or three drafts. Looking back at my time from English 112 gave me a greater feel and look at what kind of writer I am ultimately am. While going through my senior year of high school and taking a college level class I was skeptical if I was even able to accomplish that high of a writing requirement but to my surprise I fought my way through. Many students think their general education classes are going to be easy. This assumption is usually made because they are the basis of all of the advanced classes. When students sign up for classes for their degree, English 101 is often a requirement. Therefore, students put it on their schedule without a second thought. Most students do not realize how hard such a basic class could be. Mrs. Fox’s English 101 class is hard because it is time consuming, requires a lot of responsibility, and contains a difficult grading system.
Writing this evaluative essay is both beneficial to the teacher and the TCC English Department. The professor because she had given us a chance to critique her and tell her, her strengths and weakness of her teaching; it favored the English department because they now know how effective the textbook is and how effective this class is to the students actually taking it. Because I had a teacher who was willing to help when in need, English 111 wasn’t as hard as others portrayed it to be. I had a good professor, peers, and the writing center to help me with this class. I hope to continue to be successful in the second part of the course. Although I do not enjoy writing essays this is an essay I enjoyed writing.
Overall, English 102 was much harder than English 101 because the essays were not analyzing a topic once and forgetting about it. Writing about the same thing multiple times is challenging when you use all your good ideas in the first few papers. The ideas and subject matter that make up English 102 is in no way hard; however, it was very difficult to write the papers that are required in the class. Nevertheless, I think I would retake the class because it did help me learn how to write in new genres and use new writing techniques.
English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.
The Purpose of Freshman Seminar course is to prepare incoming freshman for the next four years they are going to spend in college by offering tips on and how to succeed in your four years. I set goals for myself a long time ago. At this point in my life I believe that I should be fulfilling my goals I set. When I was young and naïve I made some bad decision and for that I have to take the long and hard route to success instead of taking the easy short route like I planned. The reason why success is so important to me is because I want to succeed in life more than anything and become something in life so bad and not be a loser with no life.
Nevertheless, traditional schools offer students with a plethora of enrichment activities and allow them to participate in extracurricular activities. Students are able to recognize their skills and talents through clubs, sports, and variety of community outreach programs while homeschool students only concentrate on academics. It is an important factor in a child’s development as it promotes competition which is critical as it motivates the student to continually try to improve themselves while homeschool students are isolated (Debate.org, 2017). By joining these activities, students will be aware of the tasks they are good at doing which will raise their self-esteem. At the same time, they also learn to handle a variety of different tasks
I believe that the ability to relate to a person, or a cultures, current, and past situations are the best tool for being able to relate the word of God to them. Many missionaries take on this the task of mission work without even counting the cost of their labor. Some have been born for this, others have been called to this work, and then there are those who train their hearts, and minds for this work. There is no special character, nor demeanor that is needed to qualify for this work, other than a love for the welfare of others and a desire to reach the un-reachable. Christians live by the great commission in Matthew 28:19, go ye therefore, and teach ALL nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost.
