Do people actually understand the harm that energy drinks cause the human body? Millions of people around the world believe that energy drinks help them become more energized, but in reality they can cause more harm than good to the human body. More than 20,000 people have reported that they were hospitalized because of energy drinks, yet people continue to drink them because they became so addicted to the taste of the drink (ER). Energy drinks can lead to high blood pressure, cancer, reproductive problems, insomnia, heart palpitations and many more problems. Even energy drinks that say they are sugar free can do even more harm to your body.
Energy drinks that contain little to no sugar have a chemical called aspartame. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is 120 times sweeter than sugar. There was a study done that showed aspartame can be a leading cancer causer especially brain tumors. An excess of aspartame taken can cause 75% of the brain cells to be hurt or killed. After this happens aspartame can cause hypoglycemia, Hormonal problems, memory loss, and even AIDS. Another chemical is called sucralose or the sweetener splenda. This can reduce the ammound of good bacteria in your body by more than 50%, increase the PH in your intestines and increase body weight. Sucralose can also increase the size of your liver and lead to kidney failure.
One energy drink called five hour energy was linked to 15 deaths. They said that the amount of caffeine in the shot was equal to the amount in two cups of coffee when the shot was only 2 oz. and contains 242mg of caffeine. Tachycardia can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, and unusual sweating. More severe symptoms are when you feel more frequent extra heartbeats that number six or more and your pulse is more than 100 bpm without anxiety or exercise.
The problems that are caused by energy drinks outweigh the good they do by more than 100 times. People drink them so they can stay awake or just because the sugar rush became too addicting. It would be better and cheaper to just drink a cup of coffee then to go out and drink a can of an energy drink. Energy drinks may give you the little adrenaline rush that you need for the moment but the long term affects can be devastating. They can cause heart disease, cancer, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, and even death.
