Contemporary society tends to place emphasis on the important and influential men in the drug business. Movies such as Scarface show men with leading and powerful roles in cartel related positions. Women, specifically Mexican, have been represented under sexist lenses in which they are shown as meek, weak, fragile, and uninvolved in the drug business. However, I will argue that Mexican women enter the drug business because they see it as a way of empowerment, an economic measure, and as an obligation to the important males in their lives. As we see in the series “La Reina del Sur”, the protagonist, Teresa Mendoza, is a Mexican woman who becomes the one of the most powerful drug traffickers. Teresa is represented as a woman of power, influence, and capable of intimidation. This series represents the contemporary movement of the rise of female drug lords, and the increase in power of women in the Mexican drug business. A very important piece of this article focuses on how the ideal “trophy wife” for Drug Cartels are Latin American beauty queens. It shows how often drug lords import beauty queens into their country to serve as their wives. Although some are mandated, others fall in love with their drug-selling husband and end up risking their lives for them. This article also explores the risks associated with women in the business, and how they often die because of the businesses’ patriarchal side. Azuela shows these impacts by the progression of Camila, from a sweet innocent woman, to joining the rebel forces, and lastly to being killed. Symbolically, Azuela kills off Camila almost immediately upon her rise to power and drops her from the novel’s plot. This shows the how insignificant of an impact that women had on the battles, and how easily they were forgotten after death. Women still struggle today with gaining equal rights and treatment within the Mexican culture. It has taken nearly 70 years for women to gain equality with men in the workforce, gaining rights such as voting, and having a shared family responsibility with the male figure (Global). Unfortunately, many women within the working-class household still suffer from the traditional norms and values regarding the roles of men and women. The role of strong female roles in literature is both frightening to some and enlightening to others. Although times have changed, Sandra Cisneros’ stories about Mexican-American women provide a cultural division within itself that reflects in a recent time. The cultural themes in Cisneros’s stories highlight the struggle of women who identify with Mexican-American heritage and the struggle in terms of living up to Mexican culture – as a separate ethnic body. The women in Sandra Cisneros’ stories are struggling with living up to identities assigned to them, while trying to create their own as women without an ethnic landscape. In Sandra Cisneros’ stories “Woman Hollering Creek: and “Never Marry a Mexican” the role of female identities that are conflicted are highlighted, in that they have to straddle two worlds at once as Mexican-American women.
This was likely due to the confusion of power that these ladies could have: ‘a reflection of military thinking, which seeks to use women when necessary but yet keeps them marginal in what is essentially a male preserve’ (Salas, 1990). The main two labels for female ‘revolucionarias’ that appear within the Mexican Revolution are: ‘soldadera’ and ‘soldada’. The differences between these indicate the corresponding respect that the labelled female maintained. Therefore, “Camila is the epitome of the benign soldadera: a helpmate and companion to Demetrio. In contrast, Pintada embodies the active and malevolent soldada” (Baker, 2012). These two given labels show how each of these characters and stereotypes were viewed in this period. Camila, is only a helper to the revolution, not taking part in any of the actual activites and just aiding the male. On the other hand, Pintada takes an active role within the fighting, looting and other activities giving her the respect of being a soldier and not just a carer, which previously most females had been. However, often this respect that Pintada carried was not maintained. When many of the Mexican intellectuals revised these texts after the revolution the fighting was romanticised, thus overtime the thought of women involved in the revolution has become heavily idealised. This idea has led to the label of an ‘Adelita’
Patty Kelly’s article, “Enough already, it’s time we decriminalize prostitution”, takes the reader into a fascinating behind the scene look into one of Mexico’s legalized brothels. Although it is apparent that her research and investigation into this social experiment are well defined, it is too narrow a focus to gather all the required information to support her argument. Kelly begins with a half hazard analysis of Elliot Spitzer infidelity, then continues down the path that is far too laser like to see the overall effect on these women; failing to see these prostitutes as real people with hearts and souls. Instead, she produces an impression that the prostitutes are just commodity, bought and sold on the open market, lacking feeling for their plight. In Kelly’s investigation, she neglects to create an entire picture of what decriminalizing prostitution will cost humanity due to the fact that her investigation ignores society’s accepted understanding of what problems are produced by, or result from prostitution. There was absolutely no research cited that relating to sexual addiction, the effects on the prostitutes’ emotional and physical wellbeing, or even the acknowledgment of the organized criminal element behind prostitution.
The contrast between the Mexican world versus the Anglo world has led Anzaldua to a new form of self and consciousness in which she calls the “New Mestiza” (one that recognizes and understands her duality of race). Anzaldua lives in a constant place of duality where she is on the opposite end of a border that is home to those that are considered “the queer, the troublesome, the mongrel and the mulato” (25). It is the inevitable and grueling clash of two very distinct cultures that produces the fear of the “unknown”; ultimately resulting in alienation and social hierarchy. Anzaldua, as an undocumented woman, is at the bottom of the hierarchy. Not only is she a woman that is openly queer, she is also carrying the burden of being “undocumented”. Women of the borderlands are forced to carry two degrading labels: their gender that makes them seem nothing more than a body and their “legal” status in this world. Many of these women only have two options due to their lack of English speaking abilities: either leave their homeland – or submit themselves to the constant objectification and oppression. According to Anzaldua, Mestizo culture was created by men because many of its traditions encourage women to become “subservient to males” (39). Women in Mexico and the United States of America have played an important role structuring their society and elevating their status. Between 1846 and 1930, the stereotype and position of women within these countries differed vastly from one another. While various traditional roles of women remained the same, the manner in which they were viewed differed. In many ways, women in Mexico held a higher position than those in the United States during this time.
“Poverty and exploitation of women in Latin America can never be alleviated because they are rooted in machismo,” meaning that because of the way society was run in Latin American, women can’t advance from the ancient state of mind that they belong in the private sphere and should stay there, because only men are good enough to be out in the public sphere. The reason why society was run in this manner, was because of the machismo feeling engraved in the minds of men and, in some cases, women in society. Alicia, Carolina, and Nancy don’t really have any other choice, than try to survive on their own by doing acts that are not “approved” by the society they live in. Even now, because of their actions, we could even disagree with the way they decided to approach their situation, because even now a day, we could think that selling one’s body or being involved in “off the book”

With prostitution still arising and thriving in present day America the Argument and war waged on it by media has changed from an advocated perspective, to being seen as present day slavery among women. Especially with modern practices of forced trafficking and drugged prostitution. the views have changed from one of a women's private and personal freedom of choice, to one of "the ones who weren't lucky enough to get away from being drugged, kidnapped and forced into slaved prostitution."

Using both English and Spanish or Spanglish the author Gloria Anzaldua explores the physical, cultural, spiritual, sexual and psychological meaning of borderlands in her book Borderlands/La Frontera: A New Mestiza. As a Chicana lesbian feminist, Anzaldua grew up in an atmosphere of oppression and confusion. Anzaldua illustrates the meaning of being a “mestiza”. In order to define this, she examines herself, her homeland and language. Anzaldúa discusses the complexity of several themes having to do with borderlands, mestizaje, cultural identity, women in the traditional Mexican family, sexual orientation, la facultad and the Coatlicue state. Through these themes, she is able to give her readers a new way of discovering themselves. Anzaldua alerts us to a new understanding of the self and the world around us by using her personal experiences.
The luchadoras themselves name increased mobility and higher social status as the major advantages of their profession. Being a successful wrestler gives Bolivian woman an opportunity to travel around the world, it makes her popular in the local community (“Global Cholas” 442). The inhabitants of the Andean region share the opinion that cholita luchadora represents the empowerment of indigenous women in Bolivia. In colonial times indigenous women was perceived subordinate and, therefore, exploited by colonizers (“Global Cholas” 438). In the present days the Bolivian women show their strength to the rest of the world and promote gender equality by participating in the wrestling competition. They deconstruct the myth of Latin American women being a subject to males’ violence caused by machismo complex. Luchadoras become role models for other indigenous people in Bolivia and their leaders towards the change for the better (“Global Cholas” 443).
