An Epidemic of Empathy in Healthcare: How to Deliver Compassionate Connected Patient Care that Creates a Competitive Advantage was the book I chose to read for this assignment. I chose this book because in reading the reviews of the book and the summary, I found it to be a topic of current discussion among my associates and colleagues. The title of this book stood out to me and, after further inquiry, I realized it gave insight to one of the major problems in the delivery of healthcare today.

Christakis and Fowler developed the Rules of Life in the Network, which are used to show how empathy can be spread across the healthcare system. The network has the important aspect of connections having connections and contagion, which simply means anything that flows across the times. The author list the five rules: We shape our network, Our networks shape us, Our friends affect us Our friends’ friends affect us, and the network has a life of its own. The author also suggests that social capital be a major concern, as you want a competent, dependable workforce who will deliver high value care to patients. When we see patients, we must remember that we are not simply treating a disease. We are caring for people with lives, hobbies, jobs, families, and friends, who are likely in a very vulnerable position. According to Arianna Huffington in the article “Empathy: What We Need Now”, during hardships and instability of society, empathy is needed to find solutions to those issues. Huffington writes about how empathy is needed in our country in order to produce a positive social change. She begins by giving an example of a movement that Martin Luther King created and how empathy was a part of this movement. King as well spoke of how empathy is the sign of living. To become involved in the situations of humanity in order to improve it, displays that empathy is the core of a human’s existence. Unlike years past, patient centered care places the focus on the patient, as opposed to the physician.1 The Institute of Medicine (IOM) separates patient centered care into eight dimensions, including respect, emotional support, coordination of care, involvement of the family, physical comfort, continuity and transition and access to care.2
Patients with chronic diseases do not receive established and operative treatments to help them successfully manage their condition. These complications are aggravated by an absence of organization of care for patients with chronic diseases. Nevertheless, the fundamental disintegration of the health care system is not unexpected given that health care providers do not have the imbursement support or other tools they need to interconnect and work together successfully to improve patient care (Brennan et al., 2009; Renders et al., 200;).

It takes empathy for people by upstanding morals and values. As a nurse, my goal is to provide competent, empathetic, compassionate, and optimal holistic care to the best of my ability to my patients. This philosophy stems from the values and beliefs instilled in me during my childhood. The skill that I am the best at or at least would give myself the highest score in would be showing empathy. I am not sure why I am skilled in this it just seems to come naturally to me.
