He encapsulates and exhumes the quintessential qualities of a typical jester, in that Yorick is able to slip the conversation onto a tangent whenever the topic of his ‘debts’ is brought in to a conversation; he manages to evade these conversations as if it were a “hop, skip and jump” to him (27). However, the reality of his economic social status inevitably awaits Yorick “until, he is trapped in a social chimney corner.” When in due time Yorick will be trapped and utterly incapable to slip the topic in to a tangendental digression. In William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” there are many different events throughout the play that affect and shape the main character Hamlet. The biggest event being when Hamlet meets the ghost of his father, the king, who then proceeds to tell him that his uncle murdered him. This event will lead Hamlet to madness with sanity while plotting his revenge on his uncle which will ultimately end in his, his uncle and several other’s deaths at the end of the play.
Act One, Scene One opens in pitch darkness of the battlements of the castle of Elsinore: two guards, Barnardo and Fransico, evidently keep watch in a state of some anxiety which is immediately apparent in the edginess of their nervous questioning of each other's presence: “Who's there?”, “Nay, answer me. Stand and unfold yourself.” Tension is created in this terse exchange: as a sense of fear should be evoked in the audience of a potentially imminent attack from a yet undisclosed source. Furthermore, Barnardo orders Fransisco to return home upon midnight, in his reminder that: “'Tis now struck twelve. ” Midnight plays an important role in many texts in signifing the beginning of supernatural activities, which essentially warn the audience that a possible supernatural event is to ensue.
To fully appreciate Hamlet as a tragedy it must be understood as a comedy. Throughout this paper I will demonstrate the comedic moments of Hamlet, provide a brief analysis of the humor, and finally comment on the purpose of the comedic elements.
Hamlet's problem is not exact; it cannot be pinpointed. In fact, Hamlet has numerous problems that contribute to his dilemma. The first of these problems is the appearance of King Hamlet's ghost to his son, Hamlet. Hamlet's morality adds a great deal to his delay in murdering the current king, Claudius. One of Hamlet's biggest drawbacks is that he tends to think things out too much. Hamlet does not act on instinct; however, he makes certain that every action is premeditated. Hamlet suffers a great deal from melancholy; this in turn causes him to constantly second guess himself. The Ghost is the main cause of Hamlet's melancholy. Also, Hamlet's melancholy helps to clear up certain aspects of the play. These are just a few of the problems that Hamlet encounters throughout his ordeal.
