Emotional self-control is defined as recognizing destructive emotions and maintaining control over our impulses while acting upon them. The idea of emotional self-control is important to people in multitude of workplaces, but it is crucial for anyone in a leadership position. Strong emotional leadership is directly related to emotional intelligence. The public looks upon leaders as an example to display an even-tempered manner while facing hardships. This week readings include ideas of diffusing emotional reactivity, using responsive listening, reacting emotionally and showing empathy. The chapters also demonstrate different scenarios of using emotions, understanding emotions and managing emotions. People tend to take comments more seriously when the opinion is from a speaker that strongly impacts them or if the criticism is about a specific interest, insecurity, or shame. When people react emotionally, they become intolerant to other people’s opinions and it could lead to overreactions. Nichols explains that, “Behind every complaint is a request. Listen for the request and then ask if that’s what the person would like.” When a friend or family member is complaining, I would usually listen to their whole story before inputting my thoughts. I try to avoid transforming a conversation into an agreement by asking questions and letting the speaker come to their own conclusion. Nichols gives examples of responsive listening that includes checking the impulse to argue, asking the speakers perspective without defending or disagreeing, and reserving your response until the person is more likely to listen to your viewpoint. Emotional intelligence (EI) plays an important role in every worker in organization or corporation, especially someone with the authority or power inside the organization. A leader has to become a source of inspiration and catalyst for the employee to improve their working condition. One true leader has the ability to read what people want even though it never being told (Meghan, 2014). This will allow the employee to build a good connection and relationship between the leaders, thus improve how the organization being conducted. Some people may denied that emotional intelligence did affect ones’ performance, but big corporation such as Google and Microsoft have implemented emotional intelligence in their working condition as a way to improve the organization performance. Chadha (2013) emphasize that there are 4 key element in emotional intelligence; self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness and relationship management. Within these four elements, one element that truly related between a leader and employee is relationship management.

Emotions are frequent companions in our lives. They come and go, and constantly change like the weather. They generate powerful chemicals that create positive and negative feelings, which have a powerful effect on leadership. Some emotions can either facilitate leadership, while others can detract from successful leadership. This course, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, has truly opened my eyes to the affects that emotions have on being an effective leader. Peter Salovey and John Mayer defined emotional intelligence as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (p. 5). This definition in itself states that emotions, whether it be ones own emotions or those of others, is the underlying factor that directs the actions of a leader. Therefore, throughout the progression (advancement) of this course, I have learned the importance of the development of emotional intelligence for being an effective leader, and because of this I plan on developing the capacities that contribute to being an emotionally intelligent leader for my own success, now and in the future.

These domains are then broken into two competencies. Pressure turns into stress when individuals feel they are unable to cope with the situation. People have different ways of reacting to stress, so a situation that feels stressful to one person may be a positive challenge to someone else. Many of life’s demands can cause stress such as work, relationships and financial issues. When individuals feel stressed, it can obstruct them from dealing with demands, or can affect everything an individual does (Choices, 2016d). Stress can have a big impact both emotionally and physically. There are two ways people can portray signs of stress, psychological and physiological. Stress can affect how individuals feel, think, behave and how the body works. Psychological signs of stress can include: irritation, frustration, confusion, forgetfulness, anxiety, bad habits, headaches, behavioural signs of stress which can include avoiding others or decreased contact with family or friends and depression. Physiological signs of stress can include: heart palpitations, inflammation, insomnia physical tension, headaches and digestive problems. These stress hormones are released to enable an individual to deal with pressure or threat of "fight or flight" response. The theorist Walter Cannon 1920 developed the fight or flight response also known as ‘acute stress response.’ Stress is a biological and psychological response experienced when faced with a threat that people do not have the resources to deal with. The flight or flight response is a surge of hormone; adrenaline which is produced by glands located in the kidneys, which are released into the bloodstream. It is the response of the sympathetic nervous system to a stressful event and therefore, preparing the body to fight or flee. There are many different positions in an organization that require different knowledge, skills and abilities. Supervisory and management positions encompass more than just technical knowledge, skill and expertise in their given area, but being leaders over others. This is of interest to organizations in having leaders who are able to motivate, understand and get their teams to work together. First of all, I would like to mention my inability to control emotions and react efficiently to other people’s problems and worries. Very often, I am unable to make the right decision due to the immediate confusion and fear to lose time. Therefore, I would like to learn to analyze the situations and react moderately and wisely to every event and situation. Additionally, I would like to amplify my leading qualities and provide good solutions and ideas for the effective handling of my studies, work and personal life. In order to achieve this, I should read relevant literature, learn from the examples of great leaders and develop my strategies of effective organization and leadership.
When stressful events occur, three types of responses take place, an emotional response, a physiological response, and a behavioral response. Negative emotional responses such as anxiety, anger, and grief are common responses to stress. However, in some cases, an individual may exhibit positive emotions when coping with stressful situations. According to Folkman and Moskowiz, positive emotions promote resilience in the face of stress by promoting creativity, problem solving, flexibility, and can enhance physical and psychological health (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 84). The fight or flight response is a physiological reaction to a perceived threat of danger, in which the body prepares itself to either fight or flee an attacker.
First, stress is defined as an unpleasant state of emotional and physiological arousal that people experience in situations that they perceive as dangerous or threatening to their well being (Patel, 14). Stress is a universal feeling to everyone but the word stress means different things to different people. Some people define stress as events or situations that cause them to feel tension, pressure or negative emotions such as anxiety or anger (Patel, 15). Other people may view stress as a process involving a person’s interpretation and response to a threatening event. In any case, stress has many facets of how one perceives and responds to the certain predicament that is ailing them.
