Dramatic increases in binge drinking, and recreational drug use has also increased. The consequences of this types of behaviors can by unintended pregnancy, criminal activity, and physical affects. Why, so why is this occurring? Emerging adults are just becoming ready to challenge the status quo by behaving defiantly and because of increased opportunity to engage in illicit behaviors. Another reason could be that in their late teens the emerging adults were allowed to spend a lot of their time at unstructured and at pop up activities with no real boundaries. Prolonged exploration periods for this age group my stem from deeper reasons and should be sought out. Arnett (2000) believes that outlook and attitude is the most important reason that emerging adulthood is occurring. Arnett also believes in educating those trying to help emerging adults, it is paramount to be able to distinguish the difference between assistance and enabling. Education of health practitioners become incredibly important especially regarding the risky behaviors. Education of guidance counselors in order to fully guide emerging adults into great careers. Education of advisors, whom jobs it is to make sure that students know the right path, and …show more content…
Creating transition programs and training such as transition to adulthood themes could help with the laisse faire attitude of the emerging adult. Once again triggering the extrinsic motivation and gaining their attention. Throughout the research I repeatedly read that although theirs is a late start into adulthood, marriage, and parenthood they find being older is more refreshing. These late starters are more successful than one could guess. Once a long term partner is found then the transition seems to go smoother, and less attached at the parental hip. These emerging adults tend to enter the flow of life, and swim right
In today’s culture, the number of issues that the average person has to face on a daily basis, are astronomical. Millennials, in particular, have been greatly affected by this, so much so that a new phase in the human lifespan has been created just for them! Dubbed “emerging adulthood” by psychologist Jeffrey Arnett, plopped smack dab in the middle of adolescence, and adulthood, this phase captures any, and all doubts that 20-29 year olds are plagued with. From their economic standing, to racial, ethnic, and identity issues, and to disabilities ranging from both mental, and physical, this phase captures every single uncertainty, fear, and qualm that one person can possibly have in a neat little package.
J. J. Arnett argues his theory about a developmental stage individuals go through of 18-25 year olds as a new concept, (Arnett, 2000, pp. 469). He describes emerging adulthood as being a sustained period of time where this age group, as mentioned previously, explores their roles preceding being an adult. These movements can include events similarly by taking longer than previous years to get married and have children, moving back in with their parents at a point during this age span, exploring self-identities, not feeling like an adult and feelings of self-failure. James E. Cote, who is a previous colleague of Arnett argues the opposite about this concept being an unexperienced developmental stage Arnett calls, “Emerging Adulthood”. Cote states
The article "Alcohol Abuse is a Serious Problem for Teenagers," was written by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The article states, "Nearly four million young people suffer from alcohol dependence," and the average age at which children begin to drink is as early as 13. The article goes on to say that the number of children who experiment with alcohol has been rising steadily over the years. The article points out the unfortunate effects of drinking which range from an array of physical illnesses like liver problems and cancer. From the article we learn that because teenagers tend to indulge in binge drinking, they are at higher risk to suffer the consequences of alcohol consumption. According to the article these consequences include developmental problems like lack of growth, a reduced ability to learn, and to psychological problems like depression and suicidal tendencies. Alcohol abuse in turn leads to social problems which include dropping out of school, robbery, and "risky sexual behavior." We learn that alcohol serves as a "gateway-drug," leading to more addictive drugs like cocaine. The article substantiates this claim by citing a study conducted by the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. The article also touches on the problem of alcohol used by parents though the primary focus of this piece is about teenage drinking. The purpose of the article is to jolt readers into an awareness of the magnitude of the problem of teenage drinkiing. Most people know that teenagers like to experiment, try the new and forbidden, but the Center assumes that no one is fully aware of how serious this problem can be if it is not addressed.
Emerging Adulthood represents the period of development from late teens through their twenties, mainly focusing on the ages 18-25. This is the period which people start exploring and realizing the capabilities of their lives, which then helps them characterize as adults and no longer teenagers. This topic of psychology is compelling to me because it’s a stage that every adult has lived through, it’s interesting that we have all experienced it differently based on our life circumstances and demographics. It’s interesting to see the changes throughout the years and eventually it will be easier for young people to explore these years as more young adults are going to school nowadays. It teaches me to further understand why emerging adults go through
Middle adulthood is a complex time period that requires a multidimensional outlook to understand all of the processes and changes that are taking place. The many changes during middle adulthood include physical, cognitive and social differences. Many of these changes create significant stress and it is important to understand ways of coping with the anxiety. Many of these coping mechanisms include mindfulness and cultivating a sense of self-efficacy and mastery (pg. 482). There are many changes during middle adulthood that may require stress management techniques and interventions.
A large percentage of teens are binge drinking. The large majority of the time, when a teen is drinking they’re partaking in binging. Teens are in a transitional stage, making them emotionally and physically vulnerable. This in conjunction with the fact that teens are looking for a rebellious way to break free from authority and forge
Adults that could not delay gratification were more likely to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction(Lickerman). Other issues that were much more common were harmful actions. They were also more likely to have depression and do harmful stunts. Alcohol and drugs have a very large and unpleasant affect on people's lives. Tearing families apart and ending people's lives from overdose or harmful actions and even accidents that happened under the influence.
Adulthood has often been associated with independence. It serves as a turning point in life where one has to take responsibility for oneself and no longer being dependent on his or her family. Early adulthood, usually begins from late teens or early twenties and will last until the thirties (Santrock, 2013). Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. The onset of the transition is determined by many factors such as culture, family background, and the personality of the individual. Emerging adulthood (as cited in Santrock, 2014) is the term to describe the transition period from adolescence to adulthood.
Late adulthood is known as the period of life after middle adulthood, usually from around 65 years old to death (Santrock, 2013, p. 485). There are many varying stages of development and health in late adulthood, along with steady changing of life expectancy. Aging is a part of life, and with it comes changes in every area of living. Many diseases find late adulthood as an opportune time to affect people. Eventually, whether caused by disease or another reason, every individual dies. Death is unique to every person, and healthcare in America is changing to reflect that. This stage of life is a time when bodily processes and functions may be decreasing, but depending on lifestyle choices, death can come at different times.
During this closing period in the life span of human beings, people tend to “move away” from previous more desirable periods often known as “usefulness”.
In the novel Great Expectations written by Charles Dickens, Pip has many male influences that help him in his overall development over his lifetime. This novel is a coming of age story, having many different father like figures that help him through many things in his life. People such as; Joe, Jaggers, Matthew Pocket and Abel Magwitch. The character I believe to have the most influence on Pip is Joe. Joe is the husband of Pip’s sister, and practically raised Pip, knowing him the longest out of the all four male influences. In the beginning of the novel, when Pip was a young boy, Joe was always there for him and helped him. For example, at the moment Pip steals the piece of bread and then lies to Mrs Joe, saying he ate it, Joe gets worried.
“This generation is delaying life choices that traditionally signaled adult hood. Like marriage, parenthood, or establishing a career – choosing to travel and experiment with different jobs. Many from this generation end up returning to live at home and or rely on parents for financial support, putting stress on family relationships and own
Becoming an adult, also known as young adulthood, is a very crucial stage in one’s life. This is the climax of physical and health processes. This is the point in life when we make plans of our futures. It is the time when we think of what life will be like as an adult and make plans for the future. Most importantly, it is when we lay the starting point for developmental changes that we will undergo throughout our lives. An adult is a person who is fully grown or developed. Some people believe that you become an adult when you are 18 years old, other believe you are an adult when you can legally buy and consume alcohol, that is, at age 21 in the United States. Others believe that you are an adult when you are supporting yourself
The first difficulty that you encounter when becoming a young adult in today’s society is moving towards stability. One reason is accepting the challenges that you come across when reaching young adulthood. For example; you may not always get your way but reaching adulthood teaches you how to deal with the situation, even if you do not agree. Another reason is moving into an affordable place, meaning that you chose the best price that fits your necessary living conditions, needs, and budget. The last reason is making short-term and long-term goals for your future. For example; you always need to have a plan A and plan B to make sure you are prepared for whatever situations you
