ELSA SCHIAPARELLI (1890 ~ 1973)
I couldn’t see where her uniqueness coming from when I look at Schiaparelli’s childhood. She was from well-established family and she was well educated. She was born in 1890, Rome, Italy. She had many talents. Her studying philosophy didn’t make many connection with art and fashion in my mind with her later shocking designs. Even for me who saw many things in today’s life, her designs were shocking and somewhat crazy. I could imagine how shocking it would be for the people in that time. Because most of the designs are feminine and focused more onto how to be look good or elegance.
Like I said before, her designs are far apart from Chanel and Poiret, but somewhat similar. First, I don’t know where she got her ideas like that. She uses a lot of images that seems like not fitted into the dresses but somehow, I see it not as weird looking dress that is unattractive but as well-blended dress with elegance and classic looks. It is the shapes and colors that make the dress united and attractive. Influences of Cubism and Surrealism are also the reason why her design is unique. The artists who worked with her contributed the pattern and colors. She worked with Dali, Beroatd, and Cocteau to design fabrics and accessories. Some of designs that thought were weird and crazy are bug necklaces, ice cream cones hat and lamp cutlets shaped hat. I wonder how people dressed with these accessories. Although her design is unique, I certainly would never wear that bug necklace. It feels creepy to think that bugs are hanging around my neck. She also had an eye to see the object in other perspectives. For example, in 1935, she designed a zipper, which she dyed with same color as her fabrics and positioned them in exposed places. Another invention was her shocking pink.
Before Elizabeth Cady Stanton had any impact and attempts to start speeches like her “the solitude to self” speech or her speeches at Seneca Falls. Most women were treated as a cook and a maid, they stayed home to take care of the children. They were to be bossed around by their husband. It was actually better off if a woman was single or widowed. Also, all women were not allowed to vote. Women had a say in typically nothing that is until Elizabeth finally took a stand.
Working at her father’s clothing shop, she became very knowledgeable about expensive textiles and embellishments, which were captured in her works later in career. She was able to capture the beauty and lavishness of fabrics in portraits of aristocratic women.
Over the course of the 1860’s the hostility between the North and the South grew into an insipid relationship that only dragged on until the succession of North Carolina in 1860. The main disagreements that led to the Civil War grew over political differences. The issue of Federal versus State rights, stirred the question over how much power the government should possess, similarly the abolition movement clashed with the expansion of slavery in the South and after the elections that would inaugurate President Lincoln without one vote from a single southern state in 1861 the South was fully aware over the balance of power that was not present withi...
She also uses the shadowing technique to make the figures look 3D, and to emphasize the foreground and background. She uses bright colors in the clothing and sunlight to brighten up the painting to make it known they are outside. She used a lot of detail in their clothing, and even on the table they are playing chess on. I also noticed on the side of the chess game, she engraved her name on the side, along with some other words I cant make out.
She was dedicated to preserve her legacy by involving in multiple field, instead of only focus on painting, her works in fashion field actually increased her larger popularity more. One of her illustrations which done for the Vogue magazine cover in 1926 (pic.1) was the most impressed one. With Sonia’s signature style, the title “VOGUE” was consisted of various geometrical color blocks, the “G” of Vogue is also the head of two walking models, who are wearing richly decorated oversized coats. The strong contrast of colors stimulated the spectators’ eyeballs, the abstract color blocks that formed the recognizable subject matter which showed Sonia’s creativity to blend her own artistic style into practical use, since most of her work does not include any subject matters. By the body gestures of the two female models depicted on the cover, we could tell how confident they are, to think deeper, it could also be considered as the artist herself to express her confidence through her work. Through the mainstream media such as magazines, or practical items like clothing and fabrics, Delaunay was exposed to popular fields and successfully gained fame due to her innovative creativity. Although she did not go through too much discrimination as being a Jewish during her stage of pursuing proper artistic skill training, Sonia was a recluse in the 1940, she left Paris and moved to Southern France in order to get rid of the German Occupation and persecution, she kept being low keyed and worked quietly for 10 years, before she regained her career in the 1950s.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s involvement in women’s rights drastically improved and intensified when she met an activist in the Temperance Movement and friend of women’s rights supporters, Susan B. Anthony. With struggles in her personal life, Stanton relied on Anthony for her enthusiasm, mobility, and ability to build a women’s rights movement. They made their first movement in 1852, when they came together to help Anthony’s cause and supervised over the Women’s New York State Temperance Society. Stanton was asked to leave because her views on women’s rights and the topic of divorce.
During the time, you had the death of the Whig party and the formation of the Republican. Additionally, there was the rise of the know-nothings. The issue of slavery and sectionalism (illustrated by the parallel fears) caused many Northerners to become Republicans and support Northern action to stop southern succession and preserve the union. This is demonstrated by Stephan A. Douglas and his political journey. He originally was a politically savvy Democrat who had ambitions to become President. In trying to become the Democratic nominee he attempted to appeal to Southern Democrats by pushing the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Furthermore, he famously debated future President Abraham Lincoln. However, in the moment of truth he supported the preservation of the Union over the interests of Southern Democrats. In turn, Lincoln and many northern political opponents mourned his death. This incident speaks to the political realignment of the nation and the subsequent division among the states. The notion that your state and your section stood ahead of your political party or ideology is a what made the conditions ripe for
The rift between northern and southern political ideals grew as the Civil War approached. Many southern politicians felt that their interests became less important as liberal Northerners dominated the political arena. As the years ticked on and more and more states were accepted into the Union, it was clear that northern and southern citizens had different sets of interest that had to be accommodated in different ways. The 1820s brought the emergence of the territory issue—which states would be accepted into the Union, and with what provisions—and mass sectional politics (as northern and southern ideals grew apart). Southerners felt that their needs were not being represented in Congress, since even though the Senate was balanced, the House had slightly more northern representatives than the south. In 18...
Schiaparelli was born in Rome, Italy and started her career as a script writer in the United States before she moved to Paris to begin her life as a fashion designer. Elsa was known for her use of bold colors within each design (Info). She was first recognized in the fashion business with her sweater designed that featured a tromp l'oi scarf around the neckline. This lovely design was seen in Vogue magazine. Schiaparelli was the first to use many things. With her revolutionary ideas that were always flowing through her head she managed to come up with some extremely, fabulous creations. She was the first in the fashion industry to use synthetic material, such as jersey and cellophane (About). With all of Schiaparelli’s creative designs she became very popular in Italy but still struggled with the many rivals that surrounded her.
Coco Chanel showed the world that women were someone; that they were not only in the world to wear what men the great fashion designers designed, but also they were capable of creating. With her collections, Coco radically changed the appearance of women and laid the foundations of modern fashion, while changing the mentality of women: defending jacket suits and their masculine and functional trousers and knitted sweaters, also defended a more comfortable way of dressing and, in short, a conception of the freest woman.
I think that without Chanel’s designs and risk taking in general, women as a hole would be wearing similar things to the Victorian era, instead of things such as yoga pants and a t-shirts. Even if we were wearing things that were similar to the Victorian era we still wouldn’t have the handbags, the perfume, or the jewelry she created because I think that designers always have that one person they look up too and for most of them I think it would be Coco Chanel. Whether or not they realize it they would be using Chanel as a motivation to be better or inspiration to be like Chanel.
Gabrielle Chanel was well known mostly by the name of Coco. In the 1920’s she created a revolution in women’s clothing by removing frills and ruffles from common clothing of the time. In the 1950’s she did it again by freeing women from the inflexible cramped fit or corsets. However, even though she made some drastic changes in womens fashion, she managed to maintain elegance in her clothing, while also adding functionality and simpleness.
“Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.” (Leonard Cohen) As humans prosper through time and space, they neglect the miniscule details they endure, the veracity they have watched unfold before their eyes, and the revelations read that authors poured onto paper. When thinking about literature, poetry does not jump readily to attention, and amongst various compositions, will remain forgotten. Poetry itself, however, possesses some of the uttermost glorious writers of time, enticing thousands of readers with beautifully printed words. One of the considerably famous poets, Emily Dickinson, happens to have written nearly 1,800 poems during her lifetime, shaping our society today with scripture written by her own hand. Miss Emily Dickinson, born on the 10th of December, 1830, in the town of Amherst, Massachusetts, had an unusual lifestyle of seclusion beginning within her college years. (Biography Emily Dickinson, egs.edu) Although Dickinson had established herself as a successful student, showing a collection of proficiency in her studies, she found herself unable to attend the prestigious school of Amherst college, founded by her own grandfather, for the reason of her female gender. (Emily Dickinson’s Life, english.illinois.edu) After the denial, she attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary for one year until she wrote and requested her brother to bring her home “at all events.” (Biography Emily Dickinson, egs.edu) By this time, Dickinson had begun her path to seclusion as her melancholy and drab ways drifted her into a constant depressed state, as well as a sickly contingency that would follow her throughout the remainder of her life time. To apprehend these various pieces of informa...
Adventure Education is a type of learning technique that takes kids out of there environment that they are so use to like the gym and classroom and take them outside into the wilderness which is a good technique to help the kids learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, honest, collaboration and many any other things. Adventure education is an actively engaging the children in experiences that may have benefits or consequences. There are some teacher’s roles that can be looked at for not just adventure education, but also with teachers who teach mostly in the classroom. There is the safety enforcer who makes sure that everyone is briefed on the rules and knows what to do/ not to do. The rule enforcer makes sure that every student is abiding to
Dickinson’s feelings of emptiness, depression, death, and loneliness in this poem relate to many people in our society today. Additionally, Dickinson’s refusal to conform to other people’s beliefs and ideas, enable her to relate to those people that may have that same feeling of not belonging or fitting in. Furthermore, people struggle with trying to find their own identity and their purpose in
