Electric cars began around the mid 19th century. Because of the high costs and low top speed and short range compared to a internal combustion vehicle it led to a worldwide decline in their use. Until the 1990s gas vehicles ruled the road, but then came the Honda EV Plus. Honda released this vehicle because of the California air resources board and its clean air push. Then after a lot of struggle between the car manufactures and the government and consumers came the Honda insight hybrid in 1999. The Toyota pruis soon after came along and the market for these cars soon jumped as people started to see the change coming. In the 2000s more modern looking and highway capable electric cars came to life because of the rising gas prices more families were looking to get rid of their gas guzzling SUVs. Telsa was the first all electric highway capable car to be produced in 2008, In 2010 nissan was able to produce the first zero emissions five door family hatchback.

Electric cars have been studied and the positive effects of the plug-in and hybrid vehicles are the greenhouse gases and pollution being lower over time will help the earth as a whole, and it will help us become less dependent of foreign oil. However there have been studies on the higher overall cost of electric vehicles. The car manufactures are still trying to figure out what the right size of battery pack is really needed for best overall use. Since the government was giving tax credit and the credit you were receiving was really not helping the overall cost versus a gas vehicle.
