Elderly women in America are more likely to be poor than men. However, women of ethnic groups such as African American women, Latina women, Indian or Alaskan native’s women who are age 65 older and single, especially those living in the South are likely to live in poverty than their male counterparts (Hooyman, N., Kawamoto, K. & Kiyak, H., 2015). According to a report on the straight facts about poverty, by Alexandra, Cawthorne, (2008) one of the reasons women are poorer is that women are paid less than men, by 77 percent. This disproportionate decrease in wages is mainly due to discrimination instead of lack of job training or education; regardless of the fact a woman may have the same job qualifications as a man.
Ageism and segregation
For several decades, most American women occupied a supportive, home oriented role within society, outside of the workplace. However, as the mid-twentieth century approached a gender role paradigm occurred. The sequence of the departure of men for war, the need to fill employment for a growing economy, a handful of critical legal cases, the Black Civil Rights movement seen and heard around the nation, all greatly influenced and demanded social change for human and women’s rights. This momentous period began a social movement known as feminism and introduced a coin phrase known in and outside of the workplace as the “wage-gap.”
In the 1890s, American women emerged as a major force for social reform. Millions joined civic organizations and extended their roles from domestic duties to concerns about their communities and environments. These years, between 1890 and 1920, were a time of many social changes that later became known as the Progressive Era. In this time era, millions of Americans organized associations to come up with solutions to the many problems that society was facing, and many of these problems were staring American women right in the face.
The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. Countless arguments have promoted that wage inequality has changed and that everyone finally receives an equal amount of pay. “For women of color, the gap is largest of all: In 2006, black and Hispanic women earned 86 and 87 cents on the white man’s dollar, respectively,” (Mcswane 2). If a woman is lucky enough she will get an equal pay compared to a man doing the same job. But it is challenging for a woman of a minority background to achieve this. Not only are women paid less because of their sex, but also because of their race. There seems to be a mentality that because someone is a woman and a minority that they cannot do the same job as men or that women do not have the same education as the men, so employers do not have to pay them the same. “When the numbers are broken down by district, they 're pretty hard to ignore. Achieving the American Dream is harder for women. The American Dream is becoming harder to achieve for men and women. Companies want men because they do not need maternity leave and there are less complications. Usually, when most people think of the American Dream they think of a house with a white picket fence, two kids, a husband and wife and the husband has a career and the wife stays home. Now more women want to achieve the American Dream, but they want to have the career. It is harder for some of them because of pay, harassment and inequality.

Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). Male dominated fields tend to pay more than female dominated fields at similar skill levels. In 2012, women earned an average of $691 per week while men earned an average of $854 per week. Furthermore, the majority of women remain unaware that they are earning less than their male colleagues (Hegewisch para. 1). Today in the United States, gender inequality is prevalent in the home, sports, schools, politics, and the workplace. Of all situations, the workplace has to be, by far, the most critical. Being that discrimination based on gender directly affects a woman’s income, the gender wage gap needs to be permanently closed. In households in which only the mother is employed, single-parent households, one woman households in which there are no children, and two-woman households, women face the adversity of making less than their male counterpart, and the difference in their pay could be what determines whether their family lives in poverty. As a woman of color or disabled woman, that amount could be even lower. For these reasons, employers must offer the same pay to all employees who are doing the same work, regardless of gender.
With a record 64 million women in the workforce, pay discrimination hurts the majority of American families. Families lose $200 billion in income annually to the wage gap—an average loss of more than $4,000 for each working family. In addition, wage discrimination lowers total lifetime earnings, thereby reducing women’s benefits from Social Security and pension plans.
Furthermore, the gap is even larger for women of color. African American Women on average earn only 64 percent of what white males are paid and Latinas earn a mere 55 percent. The disparity in the wage gap greatly affects women’s spending power. According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), over the course of 15 years, women lose thousands of dollars due to wage gap discrimination. With a lack of spending power, it is much more difficult for a woman to attain financial independence when compared to males in the same position. By administering non-equal pay to female employees, employers essentially rob families of essential income through an explicit bias against female equality and advancement. This bias could be ameliorated through regulatory procedures that ensure fair compensation for work completed, thus reducing financial stressors caused by the disparity
Women had suffered unfair pay in the workforce for years. Statistics have shown that men still earn more than women who have the same degree, education, and qualifications. Women are the main focus for the uneven and unequal share of low-wages in the United States. However, women have additional responsibilities from men that keep them out of the workforce longer which in return leads to discrimination. This research will introduce problems, solutions, and prove that there are alternatives for women.
It is said for every dollar a man makes a woman makes 77 cents, and women of color make significantly less. One example of this is five members of the U.S. women 's national soccer team have filed a wage-discrimination action against the U.S. Soccer Federation. The reason they did this is because that despite the women 's team generating nearly $20 million more revenue last year than the U.S. men 's team, the women are paid about a quarter of what the men earn. This wage gap not only famous soccer players, and today 's youth but an older generation as well. Women who work full-time, year-round make substantially less than of what a man doing the same job makes. That means women will make less over their whole lifetimes, so then they end up with smaller Social Security checks. While men and women participate in retirement plans at the same rate and women even save more of their salaries, since those salaries are lower they end up with less money in their accounts. The the number of elderly women living in extreme poverty is ever growing because of this. That leaves them more exposed to scams, foreclosure, and other serious financial trouble. I suggest that we close the wage gap by enforcing the equal pay of women.
America is a country where everyone is free to live however they like, but it is possible for some people to live a happy life, if no one is around to take care of them. Nearly three hundred million people reside in the America, and out of those three hundred million populations, senior citizens make a 12 percent of the entire population. A senior citizen is commonly known as a person who is over the age of 65 and living on retirement, or known as social security benefits (Census Bureau). Ever since Franklin D. Roosevelt implied the act of Social Security in 1935, seniors are regularly provided a financial help, but seniors, along with financial help, seeks also accompany of someone who can look after them. Because of constantly growing needs of senior citizens, government as well as many non-profit organizations is working on helping seniors. Therefore I decided to research on this particular issue in my community, and I found that 64.5% of seniors are living alone in metropolitan area of Atlanta.
