There are issues facing multiculturalism in criminal justice, and these issues will affect diversity either positively or Negatively. one positive changes, is the increased presence of minority groups working within the system, and this gives all of us hope for a brighter future(Baker,2015.pg.307).
Sometimes people want someone that looks like them to be in these positions.This can even have a positive effect on offenders because it might make them say if you can make it being poor and a minority I can do it too. There isn’t just a certain color or nationality that is locked up in American prisons, but there is a diversity of people that is locked up. Second negative issue, that we face is differential treatment of groups of minorities. This still exists in the criminal justice system, contributing to the perception that multiculturalism is simply a buzzword for something not likely to occur in criminal justice or in society in general. This is something that should not exist in leading into our future(Baker,2015.pg.307). Third negative issue facing multiculturalism in criminal justice is racial profiling. Police officers are often criticized for disproportionately targeting minority drivers in an attempt to uncover drug trafficking (Baker,2015.pg.311). One problem with this is how many minorities that are killed through this practice. The United States have failed to keep track of the number of people killed through this practice of racial profiling (FILIMON,2015).
Finding the proper balance between crime control and individual rights is often difficult in a multicultural, heterogeneous society such as the U.S. A criminal justice system that recognizes and responds to multiculturalism is one that includes no racial profiling. Future criminal justice practices will hopefully be void of race-based and culture-based crime
