Lead is a common used element, lead can be found in all parts of our environment, the air, the soil, the water, and even inside our homes. While lead is constantly being used do we ever actually think about the impact it has on the environment, the importance of lead, where is lead from and who discovered the ways we can use it. Lead is a commonly used chemical element, it is a heavy metal but yet denser than most materials we use. On the periotic table lead is assigned under the symbol Pb (Plumbum, meaning liquid silver) and the atomic number of lead is 82. Lead was never formally discovered; it has been around since the ancient times. The color of led color at first comes off as a blue/whitish color when freshly cut and once it is exposed …show more content…
When it comes to the children levels of lead in the body can affect behavior problems, the learning capabilities, growth, hearing problems and anemia. If lead is digested it can cause seizures and in worst-case scenarios of death. Short-term exposure to high levels of lead can cause abdominal pain, and vomiting. Whereas chronic low-level exposure can cause retarded cognitive and intellectual development in children. Infant, young children and fetus are more sensitive to toxic effects of lead, especially in regard to the damages to their central nervous system. The affect that lead has on animals is that it inhibits their ability to synthesize red blood cells. The affect that lead has on plants is that lead pollution coats the surface of the leaf and reduces the amount of light reaching it. This results in stunting the growth or killing the plants by reducing the rate of photosynthesis, inhibiting respiration, encouraging an elongation of plant cells influencing root development. As for the affect on micro- organisms is that lead at the concentrations found near roadsides can wipe out the bacteria and fungi on surfaces and soil, as microorganisms play a huge part in the food
In the article Industrial Urban Agriculture: The Potential and Challenges of Producing Food in Cities, Caroline Schneider talks about the challenges of growing local sustainable food. In the article she says, “Several contaminants can be found in urban soils, and lead is the most prevalent. (Schneider). ” This quote argues that although no chemicals are used, there is still potential danger in eating the food. But later she also says that you can fix that problem by simply cleaning the food. In the article it says, “Practices such as washing food well before eating and covering soils with mulch can help decrease these risks. (Schneider). ” This quote proves that as long as you take the proper steps to clean your food and help your soil, your food will be safe. Local Sustainable is safe and healthy for
This is why the Flint water crisis is so critical today. Because young children are being exposed to lead and they should actually be screened from the lead. The pipelines with lead in the water system and the whole community of Flint, not being able to drink water out of the facet as well as not being able to
Lead is a metal found virtually everywhere even today. Sources of lead include auto body shops, electric storage batteries, glazes for china dishes, crockery, insecticides, electric cable insulation, hose, pipe, sheet and floor coverings. Lead is associated with stain glass work, jewelry making and antique ceramic doll painting. Although lead in paint was outlawed, there are still many homes that have lead paint (White et al, 1990). Lead found in gasoline was found in one study to account for 23--27% of the lead blood levels in the people tested (Wagner, 1991). This exposure to lead sources is more of a concern for children due to the characteristic habit of children to taste everything they touch; this characteristic is known as pica. Children are also in closer contact with their lead polluted environment during play. They are more active and exposed to outdoor contaminates and they inhale dust and dirt that are lead contaminated. Furthermore, the adsorption rate of lead in the digestive tract is up to 10 times greater in chil...
When lead enters the environment, it starts to become a problem. After a period of about ten days, depending on the weather, it falls to the surface. Here lead builds up in the soil particles. Where it may make its way into underground water or drinking water due to the fact the grounds acidic or if it's soft enough. Either way it stays a long time on the soil or in water. Months or years down the road after the lead has built up it starts to become a problem for children that play outside of their homes . This lead containing soil particles get on the child's hands or clothing and end up in the child's mouth. After the build up of so much lead it leads to lead poison. Lead poisoning has been an issue since the early 1900s, when the use of lead started being banned from the manufacturing of paint in foreign countries such as Australia. Unfortunately, the United States did not start banning it until 1978, when it finally became illegal in our nation. Today 90% of the lead in the atmosphere comes from the burning of gasoline. This problem has been a large issue since the 1920s, when the Environmental Protection Agency started making laws on the amount of lead allowed in gasoline.

... water crisis will have a long term affect on those who are consuming this water on a daily basis. Lead attack the brain and can cause coma and possibly death. Children who survive lead poisoning are left with serious health issues such as metal defects and leave a child mentally unstable. Even at lower levels of exposure symptoms such as behavioural changes such as reduced attention span, reduced intelligence quotient (IQ). Children with smaller amount of lead exposure also showed increased anti social behaviour, it also reduces educational attainment. These side effect of high lead exposure can leave children scarred for life. The water crisis in Flint Michigan car scar children for life. This could all be resolved if they could come to an agreement and replace the water pipes, allowing for cleaner and healthier water to be accessible to citizens in Flint Michigan.
In this current generation, technology is a leading cause in making this world an easier place to communicate. There are plenty of positive effects from technology on people that can be praised. Yet there are many negative effects from technology that people should be concerned about. Each year, the media says less people are voting each year when is an election. People are simply not going out to vote whenever there is an election. Cell phones are causing our generation of teenagers to become politically apathetic.
Air pollution is known to affect human and animal life. Plants are also affected indirectly as air pollution is known to cause acid rain, an even deeper detriment to plant life than most. Lung related diseases are among the most important features that the world have come
Symptoms of lead poisoning include loss of appetite, weakness, anemia, vomiting, and convulsions, sometimes leading to permanent brain damage or death. Children who ingest chips of old, lead-containing paint or are exposed to dust from the deterioration of such paint may exhibit symptoms. Levels of environmental lead considered nontoxic may also be involved in increased hypertension in a significant number of persons, according to studies released in the mid-1980s. As a result, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in recent years have been revising downward the levels of environmental lead that it would consider safe.
However, it was extremely toxic, polluting land which caused lead poisoning too many people including children. In a matter of fact, lead poising caused an increase in violent crimes, causing side effects to the brain. Example, Chris Gentilviso
Leading With Data Ever since I graduated from college, I have always taught grade level students who are required to do state-mandated tests. Because of teaching those grade levels, I have always been working with test data. However, I have never given much taught has to how powerful, effective use data can be, in improving my students’ academic performance until working in an elementary school in the United States of America. In my country, Jamaica, I have taught students in grade six.
Daring to lead is one of the hardest things to do. All eyes are following your every move. All the responsibility lands on your shoulders. You welcome stress and in doing so, you also mentally and physically prepare to work hard. However, daring to lead empowers, uplifts and impacts the lives of people who comprises the minority community.
Leading by example: let it be defined by doing something that one would like a group of people to do, and thinking that they will follow. Is that idea reality or fiction? While this concept seems logical, the idea is fiction. It is almost impossible for people to be perfect. People are prone to error, and cannot always lead by example.
In some instances in our life we experience stress. Stress can have both a positive or negative impact in a person’s life. On the positive side, stress can be the force that drives a person to perform well during an interview or a piano recital. However, from another perspective, stress can be a negative force that people do not desire. For example, if a person is waiting in traffic for a long time, then, the resulting stress will have negative impact on their mood and their day can be spoilt. If a person’s stress is left untreated for a certain amount of time, then there is a high chance that it can become chronic. This essay will focus on some of the effects that stress can have on a person and the
Bhardwaj 1 Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas.
