Throughout a child’s life, he/she is faced with many obstacles. One of the biggest hurdles that they must overcome is learning to read. For some children, that task does not come easily. Children with learning disabilities struggle the most in school because they do not learn as quickly as children without learning disabilities. Some of the most common strategies that teachers use are by connecting fun and learning with online vocabulary games. As stated earlier in a previous paragraph, this is the most beneficial way to teach students vocabulary words because technology is something that most students can relate too. Another strategy would be to take advantage of online word reference tools that are also teaching tools. The World Wide Web offers many reference websites that aid in vocabulary word research. For instance, www.dictionary.com is a website that contains a Thesaurus and many other extras. These strategies along with many others continue to help students build and learn vocabulary words better and faster.
There many ways to use technology to build vocabulary in a child’s mind. While learning why vocabulary is important, children also have the availability to learn vocabulary through the use of technology. The use of technology has become so common, and the different strategies provided through the use of technology help readers learn vocabulary expeditiously. For example, a tape recorder could be used to help someone who has a short attention span in class. This way, the student can rewind or fast forward to any part of the lecture without disturbing the class. Another common and often used AT is the calculator. The calculator is used in many math classes to help solve difficult problems. Calculators are used by students with or without learning disabilities. Assistive technology has become very advantageous in helping with teaching children to read and comprehend.
There are many different learning problems that can be addressed with AT. The most common are Listening, Reading, and Mathematical problems. Students with these problems are prone to receiving help from Assistive Technologies. If a student has poor listening and reading skills, the best AT to use would be tape recorders or one-on-one tutoring with the teachers. In mathematics, students struggle with organizing and remembering math problems and formulas. Thus, the best assistive technology to use would be video examples. This way, the student can see and hear how the problem is worked out
