Communication is an innate characteristic of humans and other beings alike, who uses different languages and signals to help communicate with one another. plays a big part in our day to day lives but its importance cannot be stressed more in the nursing environment where miscommunication in some cases can be fatal to the patient and the health staff such as during an operation where communication between the surgeons and nurses can mean life or death to the patient, but with most nurses it also helps with facilitating in nursing partnership with the patient and other nursing colleagues. It is an active tool in nursing to help with partnership by understanding experiences, ideas, opinions and perspectives from patients and other health professionals to achieve an overall better quality of healthcare. One definition of communication is a way of expression of a person’s thoughts, emotions, and perspectives through when interacting with another person. There are mainly two forms of communication these are verbal and non-verbal communication; verbal communication is a way of explaining different thoughts and emotions using words and sounds from our mouth, understanding this form of communication is important to nursing partnership, because it helps us understand the feelings and emotions of our patient and when interacting with them and think of the appropriate actions to deal with them. Non-verbal communication, on the other hand, focuses on gestures, facial expressions, and body movements to express themselves, while we learned non-verbal communication first when we were younger this can be harder to understand sometimes up as because of the subtlety in non-verbal communication people can hide non-verbal signals to the person and small gestures can mean different things for each
Communication encompasses a wide range of processes such as the exchange of information, listening, posing of questions (Fleischer et al., 2009) or use of body language. In a healthcare environment where there are constant interactions among nurses, doctors, patients and other health professionals, professional and effective communication is important in ensuring high quality healthcare standards and meeting the individual needs of patients.
Literature Critique This literature critique reviews Catherine McCabe’s article, Nurse-patient communication: an exploration of patients’ experiences (McCabe, 2002). She has obtained many degrees related to health care (Registered General Nurse, Bachelor of Nursing Science, Registered Nurse Teacher, and Master Level Nursing). She has many years of experience and is currently teaching at Trinity Center for Health Sciences. As stated in the title, this study will review the patient’s interactions with nurses in relation to their communication. This study used a qualitative approach, as stated within the article, by viewing the life experiences of the participants.
Communication and interpersonal skills are closely related in the nurse-to-client professional relationship. There are several different types of communication in professional nursing. They are written communication, verbal communication and nonverbal communication.
Armistead was hit as well on page 328 he took a bullet to the chest, the minie balls were more accurate because of their grooves and the pointed tip that let it pierce the air allowing it to go farther than a musket ball and much more damage. The bullet would’ve shattered part of the upper half of his rib cage, launching shards of bone with the flatten out bullet hitting Armistead’s lungs. After that he start to suffer from low oxygen then he go unconscious and die from lack of oxygen, or he die from bleeding out from the all tissue and muscle being teared. So the surgeon wouldn't have been able to do anything Armistead was a lost cause and if by some miracle the surgeon did save him the dirty tools that went inside him to take out the bullets
“Communication is the heart of nursing… your ability to use your growing knowledge and yourself as an instrument of care and caring and compassion” (Koerner, 2010, as cited in Balzer-Riley, 2012, p. 2). The knowledge base which Koerner is referring to includes important concepts such as communication, assertiveness, responsibility and caring (Balzer-Riley, 2012). Furthermore, communication is complex. It includes communication with patients, patient families, doctors, co-workers, nurse managers and many others. Due to those concepts and the variety of people involved, barriers and issues are present. Knowing how to communicate efficiently can be difficult.

Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
Nurses playing an important role in communication with the patient. ”communication is a life long learning process for nurse.’’(P & P). Nurses are working with patients and their families from their birth to death. It is mandatory to the nurse to maintain or create a therapeutic relationship, communication throughout their caring process. For effective communication the nurse should understand their cultural belief, and values, etc. One person’s personal beliefs, traditions and values can influence their recognition of their health and wellness. Based on that they will choose their medical care and treatment. (Nadline Caron). Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of the Canadian land. Aboriginal peoples are living with their
The ability to communicate effectively is an essential skill that plays a crucial role in the profession of nursing. Through ineffective communication, language and attitudes, the video entitled “effective communication in nursing” suggests that correct professional nursing practice positively affects health outcomes and patient care. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse, under the domain of Collaborative and Therapeutic Care, closely relate to the issues presented in the clip. From the perspective of the nurse, patient and health outcomes, Competency 9.1, 9.2 and 9.4 are examined to support the importance of suitable nursing practice and patient-centred care.
According to Boykin “Caring is the foundation of nursing” (Boykin et al, 2011), and it is the nurses’ responsibility to understand what it means to be caring toward patients, which can be achieved through having professional communication skills. Not only does not being able to communicate affect the patient, but also it affects how the nurse is able to do his or her job to the best they can. Smith and Pressman say that the Institute of Medicine has released reports, which stress, “good communication is critical to ensuring safe and reliable nursing” (Smith & Pressman, 2010). Bad communication skills have the potential to be more dangerous to the patient and can in tern make a life-threateni...
Nurses today need to have excellent communication skills. Receiving information from patients is the most important aspect of nursing. If nurses are unable to communicate with their patient then they would not be able to have a relationship with them. Communication is where two or more people interact with each other, by using sounds and words, this is verbal communication. Some individuals have different behaviors where they try to express themselves to others without using spoken words, this is non verbal communication. Once nurses have the proper communication tools, techniques and evidence based practice, when communicating with their patient, they would get the necessary information needed from the patient to properly diagnosis them.
Over the past three weeks of clinical practice, one event that personally stood out to me was when I would communicate and interact with patients that are diagnosed with dementia and depression. The situation is very meaningful to me as a student nurse because these topics were taught and evaluated from the online Gentle Persuasive Approach Modules and it was a challenge to perform those skills for the first time in an actual health care setting. Interacting with people with Dementia is much more complex than it seems and did cause situations to arise which is the very reason I chose this topic to reflect upon from my clinical practice.
Communication in the nursing practice and in healthcare is important because when talking with patients, their families, and staff, the nurse and the nursing student needs to be able to efficiently express the information that they want the other person to understand. “Verbal communication is a primary way of transmitting vital information concerning patient issues in hospital settings” (Raica, 2009, para. 1). When proper communication skills are lacking in nursing practice, the chances of errors and risks to the patient’s safety increases. One crucial aspect of communication that affects the patient care outcome is how the nurse and the nursing student interacts and communicates with the physicians and other staff members. If the nurse is not clear and concise when relaying patient information to other members of the healthcare team the patient care may be below the expected quality.
Communication is a simple process and known by everyone as it is an inborn activity. Yet, there are people suffering from language disorder, who cannot deliver speech normally. Therefore, especially for nurses, it is important for us to learn different communication skills to talk with different people.
Communication is an important concept of caring in nursing because the nurse has to know how to communicate efficiently in order to get the patient to trust the nurse enough to open up to the nurse and also the nurse needs to communicate respectfully to show the patient that they genuinely do care about their health and want to help them as much as they
