Educational Autobiography Statement I think that I have always wanted to be a teacher. Being the eldest of four children, I have always enjoyed being that helping hand and using my talents and abilities to help others. In the remainder of this essay, I will explore how my personal background, development as an individual over time, and how experiences as a student have influenced my attitude towards education and prompted me to choose teaching as a profession. My full name is Kylie Jo Jahn, born on January 10, 1997. I have brown hair, brown eyes and am short for being at the age of 18. I was born in the town of Dawson, MN, where I spent the first two years of my life. My parents and I then moved to Madison, MN where I have lived since. I have two sisters and one brother, all three are younger than me. Karissa, my sister, is 16 and my best friend. Kayla, my other sister, is 8 and has the biggest heart. My brother, Jordan, is 12 and looks out for me as if he were my older brother. Being the oldest of four children, I grew up helping my parents out with my younger siblings. My parents have instilled in me the importance of showing respect for authority figures, of listening, having responsibilities and time management, to name a few of the things that have helped shape me into the person that I am today. I have participated in many sports throughout the years including tennis, basketball, dance and track. I have a love for photography and really anything crafty. Anything outdoors is calling my name, especially when the autumn season comes around. To keep me busy in the summers I have obtained countless babysitting jobs and have also had the opportunity to work with a local daycare back in my hometown where we would take trips to the park and pool, have lemonade stands, and play with finger-paints to name some of the many things we did to keep
busy. Another fact about me, I know my values and don’t fall for peer pressure too often. I value time with family and friends. Family is something that always comes first for me. I also value hard work and personal discipline. I believe that hard work can take any person far in life. You don’t just come across success by hoping for it, but by working toward and fighting for it. Faith and fairness are other things that I have grown to value. These are just a few of my values in life. I am an adventure seeker with an enormous amount of interests from photography, to cooking and crafts, spending time with family and friends just to name a few. With so many interests I thought I would choose a profession that could incorporate all the things that I love, teaching. I look forward to bringing what I have to the classroom and sharing my talents with all that I can. I can honestly say that I have always looked forward to the start of a new school year. As a matter of fact, I would even go so far as to say that I have enjoyed school for the better part of the eighteen years or so that I have spent attending it. There have been many positive and negative, teaching and learning, experiences throughout the years, there are with anything in life. All of these experiences have influenced my decision to become a teacher and have shaped me into the teacher that I am working to become today. I enjoy learning new things, in all aspects of my life, and plan to continue to learn and take classes in a variety of subjects to better myself as a teacher and learner.
To begin out of the countless professions one has to chose from in the world today I have chosen to become a teacher. I have chosen to become a teacher because I myself am a product of some whom I consider to be the best teachers in the world. As a child in North Carolina I was inspired by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Hollyfield. Mrs. Hollyfield taught me that no star was too far out of reach, if I put my mind to accomplishing my goal I could make it. Mrs. Hollyfield inspired me to be the best I could be at anything I wanted to be. As I have grown I have had other important teachers, some whom I am surrounded by daily whom inspire me to set out to accomplish my dreams. These wonderful inspiring people in my life have led me to the decision of becoming a teacher.
In the article “Why Do They Teach? - And Why Do They Leave?” Carol Curtis asks people from who are potential teachers all the way to teachers who have left their profession. This article is a survey in which asks potential teachers, why they would want to teach for the rest of the rest of their lives? And discusses the major points in which teachers leave this profession and the reason they felt un-supported in the school environment. When asking college aged students they asked, why do you want to teach? In response seventy one percent of these students said “for self-fulfillment” and a continued seventy percent said “they had a mentor or teacher who influenced them in a positive way” (780). So this shows that these teachers are going into this profession knowing for a fact this is what they want to do, and obviously are not giving up on their dreams. I fell in love with learning when I was only a small child. With the support and encouragement of my parents, I have come to know the value of education and have a desire to instill this same sense of structure in students I will come in contact with. For this reason, and a few others, I decided to become a teacher.
I am particularly motivated to be an effective and efficient teacher. The basis for this high motivation is my love of learning, respect for the profession, and commitment to inspire others. Therefore, I have chosen a career in teaching. I feel passionate about the direct positive impact I will have on my future students’ lives. Teaching supports my goal of influencing students’ on both the academic and social levels.
Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
Teaching is a complex occupation that requires as much empathy and emotion as it does educational skill. I had always dreamed of becoming a teacher, and realized after having my own children, that I would not truly be fulfilling my purpose in life if I did not pursue this dream. As a volunteer at the elementary school in my community, I loved the environment and took tremendous joy in watching the children learn. I felt that I had the ability, along with the dedication and desire, it would take to become a full time educator. To achieve this goal I will strive to give my students a positive beginning, provide confidence in their individual abilities, and prepare them for different aspects in life.
My decision to pursue a career in teaching is due, in part to my desire to make an impact on the kids that I teach. Teaching is a very rewarding profession in which the teacher is directly able to affect a child’s life. During this stage of my college career, I have reached the realization the becoming a teacher is not too far from my grasp. There have been many influences on my life that have led me to this point and that helped me to establish goals for my career. Due to my father’s influence mainly, I decided I wanted to become a teacher. I will be a third generation teacher when all is said and done, and growing up in an educational environment provided me with the foundation to pursue a career as a teacher.
I grew up in the 80s (born in 1977) and while I am sure that era impacted me in more ways than I am even aware of, I think that it was my own personal home life that set me on my current path. My mother was much older (she was 40 when I was born) and only had a 6th grade education. My father was 19 when I was born and had his GED. They had a tumultuous relationship for obvious and private reasons. They divorced when I was seven years old and I remained with my mother. Both parents worked in manual labor type jobs—my mother cleaned houses and my father repaired mobile homes. Neither knew how to be parents. My mother was an alcoholic who, I now believe, was also bipolar, and my father was just

Teachers may not make the most money or have the most respected profession, but it is a job that is always needed. Teachers have helped encourage so many of the world’s brightest people; so many people have admitted that they wouldn’t be where they are today without the support from that one special teacher. I want to be that special teacher, the one who goes the extra mile for her students and pushes them to be the best they can be. But most importantly, I want to be able to teach my students to be worldly and independent. For Robert Hutchins once said, “It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts…it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and to always think for themselves”.

The reason why I want to be a teacher is because I want to help educate others, and also to aid them in discovering their own purposes in life. I want to help students to understand that it is okay to be yourself, to be creative, and to be outspoken. I want to share with my students all of the knowledge that I have gained throughout my life and education, and teach them how to relate that knowledge to their own personal experiences. It is my belief that teachers are the ‘miracles workers’ of the world, and that without them, we would have no doctors, lawyers, or even plumbers. I have strong faith in the belief that teachers are the people who are wholly responsible for opening the doors of realization when students are looking for their own occupational niches.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to be a teacher. I personally remember the times when I used to insist on playing school with my younger sister, and I used to love to pretend to be a teacher and make activities for her to do. I even had my own grade book and my own easel where I was able to express my creativity. My dream ever since I was a little girl was to become a teacher, and I think it is amazing that what used to be a pastime and a fun activity for me suddenly became something that I want to pursue in the future. I have always admired and appreciated teachers, and I still do. Teachers have always had a positive impact on my life, and I really would like to give back and become a teacher myself so that I could have the ability to inspire students just like my teachers have inspired me in one way or another. Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. Education has been a huge part of my life, my mother started teaching when I was three years old she always said, “Justan when you grow up you should teach, your super smart and very creative.” In addition, like many other students have been in school for the majority of my life. My philosophy of education is to be a life changer. I want to touch a student’s life and leave a good positive imprint on their views of education. Teachers are more than educators they are mentors, class managers, role models, and learners. Effective teachers are learners they learn about their students, they learn how to differentiate their classrooms based on what they know about the students, and they stay up to date on the current educational technology.
