Education and Vocational Training for Prisoners: Is it Effective and Cost-Worthy? “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela. According to a report published by RAND, entitled “How Effective is Correctional Education, and Where Do We Go From Here?”, Lois Davis states that 95% of convicts eventually come back into the community. Hence, some light should be cast on what we ultimately want them to do when they come out. Education is vital to a successful reentry into community that most inmates are lacking. Prisoners are unwarranted an opportunity of education because they are in jail as a form of punishment not an opportunity to learn and receive a free education. This is not true since according to the Scottish Centre for Crime & Justice Research there are four main purposes of prisons; retribution, incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation. As a part of the rehabilitation process educational programs are given to help prepare a well-educated citizen once the criminal is released back into the society. Moreover, critics state that it is not fair to the people who follow the law and play by the rules to be expected to provide free college degrees for convicted criminals, instead they believe their children should be placed above criminals. However, even criminals are part of the society that cannot be ignored and they have the right to direct some attention their way after all they are still human begins. So, alongside funding projects that will help raise a better future of our society to our children, we cannot forget to fund correctional education programs for prisoners as education is the best
