Trace the development of primary education in Malaysia to present day, explaining in detail the different phases and emphasis over the years.

Education System In Malaysia

Education as a whole is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, which is responsible for managing a complete school system which ranges from primary to post-secondary level, regulate the syllabus, control national examinations such as UPSR, PMR and SPM and supervises the development of education in the country. Tertiary education in Malaysia is managed by the Ministry of Higher Education.

History of Primary Education in Malaysia

Phase 1 - Before the British Colonial Period (1400 - 1786)

Education during this period was typical of feudal societies. Only the royalties had the benefits to formal education. For the rest of the society, education was informal and limited.Boys focused more on fishing and farming, while the girls focused more on cooking and weaving. However, the Islamic society established a small number of Quranic schools for the purpose of religious education.

Stage One
Teaching is centered around the teachers’ home. Students learn to recite the Quran and Fardhu Ain in the houses of their teachers, commonly known as Ulama’ or Ulamak

Stage Two
Teaching is centered around mosques, surau and madrasah. Due to an increase in number, students sat in a circle together with the Ulamak in the mosques, surau and madrasah. The Ulamak is often invited to the Istana to teach the royal family.

Stage Three
Teaching is centered around religious institutions, which is also known as pondok. During this stage, there is no standard syllabus. The content and delivery is based on the curriculum used in Al Haram Mosque in Mekah. Subjects ...

It was set up in Kirkby, Lancashire, Liverpool in England. The implementation of this college is to train teachers from the Federation of Malaya. Also, to overcome the shortage of trained teachers.

Brinsford Lodge
It was set up in Wolverhampton. It is responsible to train teachers for lower secondary schools and to train potential lecturers for the local teacher training colleges.
