Introduction
Malaysia was once a colonized land and known as Malaya back then. Malaysia is one of the Commonwealth countries, which means Malaysia was one of the British colonies.
Malaysia was under British powers for approximately 446 years (from 1511 until 1957)
The Portuguese, Dutch, British, Japanese & even Siamese had colonized Malaya before.
1. Portuguese: 1511-1641
2. Dutch: 1641-1824
3. British: 1824-1942, 1945-1957
4. Siamese: 1821-1909
5. Japanese: 1942-1945
The British first came in the late 1700s. In the late 18th century, the British East India Company traded in and partially controlled India. When Malaya caught their attention, they began to look for a base in Malaya. The British under Francis Light had occupied Penang and founded Georgetown.
At that time, they began looking for a base in Malaya in 1786; the British under Francis Light occupied Penang and founded Georgetown. In 1800, they took over Province Wellesly or more known locally as Seberang Prai.
British came to Malaya for many different reasons; they were looking for new resources for their factories back in Britain. The growth of China trade in British ship increased their company’s desire for bases in the region near it.
Main reasons for the interest of British in the country in the 19th Century: The opening of Singapore, The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, the establishment and transfer of power of the straits, Settlement Intervention of the Malay States, the progress of British Administration and opening of the rubber estates.
Factors of British colonialism in Malaya were because there were vas natural resources in Malaya, strategic location and also to extend their influence; to be seen as a big powerful nation, and finally to spread the Christian ...

However, the negative impact was a horrible depletion of natural resources in Malaya because the British took the resources and exported them out and left not much for the locals anymore. Despite the negative effects had brought bad impact to the country, it was also one of the things that have strengthened the country. It had provided an acceleration of development for the country.

In 1770, Captain James Cook discovered, and claimed Australia to be controlled by the control King George III of England. However by 1788, this new territory was colonized by what is known as the First Fleet, which consisted of eleven ships, and approximately 1,350 people. These colonists landed in Camp Cove, where they encountered the Cadigal natives. This was the first colony Britain set up in Australia. Soon after, the Second Fleet arrived with the necessary food and other supplies needed to survive.
One country that had imperialism was India. By the mid-1880s, the British East India Company controlled three fifths of India. The cause of British domination was that the land was very diverse and the people could not unite and that the British either paid local princes or used weapons to get control. Positive effects of imperialistic rule in India were that the British set up a stronger economy and more powerful industries. They built roads and railroads. British rule brought peace and order to the countryside. They revised the legal system to promote justice for the Indians regardless of class. Indian landowners and princes, who still owned territory grew rich from exporting cash crops such as cotton and jute. The British introduced the telegraph and the postal system as a means of communication. These improvements and benefits from British rule eventually lead to Indian nationalism. The exposure to European ideas caused an Indian nationalist movement, the people dreamed of ending Imperial ...
The Effects of British Imperialism in India One could approach this topic from two points of view: the British and the Indian. One could choose either party and find very different opinions. When British colonizers first arrived in India, they slowly gained more and more control in India through many ways, the most prominent being trade and commerce. At first, they managed India’s government by pulling the string behind the curtain. However, soon they had acquired complete rule over India, converting it into a true British colony.
Efforts in trying to make new British colonies along the coast of America were well supported by the British people. In 1607, many British settlers decided to make Jamestown their new home. Due to lack of adequate food sources,
In 1606, wealthy people in London formed a group called the Virginia Company. They wanted a colony in the Americas for wealth. Although the Jamestown colony was the first permanent English colony in the Americas, it is not the first English colony to be told to be settled in the Americas. The Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony, was to be settled in America before Jamestown, but it disappeared.
One of the most important aspects of imperialism is the take over of government. The English accomplished this in several ways. Some of the “Unfair Treaties” forced the Chinese to allow the English ships into their ports and to allow them to have a major role in the trade market. The English wanted tea, porcelain, and silk from china. The Chinese however didn’t want to gods the English offered in return. The English began trading opium in return for the goods. Although it was illegal, many of the money hungry merchants excepted the opium in return for the things that were valuable to the English. Because of this, the first Anglo-Chinese war erupted. China underestimated the power of England and was defeated. At the end of the war, they were forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing (1842). The treaty was one of the first treaties known as the “Unfair Treaties.” Under this treaty, china gave up the island of Hong Kong, abolished the licensed monopoly system of trade, granted English nationals exemption from Chinese laws, and agreed to give England whatever trading concessions that were granted to other countries then and later.
Imperialism in India British imperialism in India had many positive and negative effects on both the mother country, Britain and the colony, India. Many people would argue which effects were more prominent in these countries, and some would agree that they were equal. But in both cases, there were actually both. In India, the British colonization had more positive effects than negative. For instance, when the British colonized India they built 40,000 miles of railroad and 70,000 miles of paved roadway.
These include peppers, spices, and teas. In other words, in order to trade effectively, the English had to set up a colony from which they could trade. Britain understood this and had a lot of colonies globally. Britain possessed colonies along the eastern seaboard of North America at the beginning of the 18th Century, as well as a number of islands in the Caribbean. The U.S. state of Georgia became a British Crown Colony in 1732 and Britain acquired the Ceded Islands of the Caribbean in 1763.
There is no doubt that British imperialism had a large impact on India. India, having previously been an group of independent and semi-independent princedoms and territories, underwent great change under British administration. Originally intended to consolidate their hold on India by establishing a population that spoke the same language as their rulers, the British decision in the 1830s to educate Indians in a Western fashion, with English as the language of instruction, was the beginning of a chain of events, including a rise in Indian nationalism, that led to Indian resentment of British imperialism and ultimately to the loss of British control over India.
The first notable positive effect of the empire is industrialization. The British having been ahead in industrial evolution helped spread technology to new places around the world. Particularly, the British Empire was responsible for the development of early industries in their colonies (Balasubramanyam & Wei, 79). They built industries in the colonies such as sugar factories, cotton factories and tobacco industries. Certainly, this was a new development in these colonies that later led to the colonies mechanizing their cottage industri...
Imperialism has not only influenced colonial territories to better themselves or to further the mother country’s realm of power, it also had a significant impact on the people’s culture, education, environment, and political systems. Japan and Britain were two imperial systems that countered each other in many facets but also had strikingly similar qualities that had helped them become strong imperial powers that needed one another to continue their position amongst others.
In 1857 the British had invaded the nation of Hindustan (India). Many feel that if it were not for the British Empire, India would still be an under developed country. The British established a government system that before did not exist. It was a three level system including the imperial government located in London, the central government located in Calcutta, and later on provincial governments scattered throughout the regions of what was known as the British Raj1. There is no doubt that British imperialism had a large impact on India. From positive affects to negative affects, British colonized India. It all started around the 1600’s when the British East India Company entered India. Only as traders, they entered what was known as the Mughal Empire. Around the 1757 Battle of Plassey the Mughal empire fell (Carrick) and it was only a matter of time until the British Raj took their once in a lifetime chance.
Colonization for the British first began in 1591 when the merchant Sir James Lancaster had been commissioned to set sail by Commander Sir Francis Duke towards the East Indies. Sir James would continue to sail until in September 1592, he would land in Penang remaining there for two years pillaging any rival European ships that were to harbor there. Returning to Britain in 1594 and relaying the news of this newly found area, the British would not become a major participant in Penang’s history until 1786 with the Malay Sultanate of Kedah. During this time, the Burmese and the Siamese armies had increasingly threatened the Sultan of Penang forcing him to cut a deal with then Captain of the British Navy in the Southeast Asia region Francis Light.
Malaysia is located in the south-eastern Asia, bordering Thailand and northern one-third of the island of Borneo, bordering Indonesia, Brunei, and the South China Sea, south of Vietnam. Due to its locations, it has been colonised since the late 18th centuries by many countries. Since 1965, Malaysia has had one of the best economic records in Asia, with GDP average of 6.5% growth for almost 50 years. The economical development especially boosted during 1981 and 2003 under the governance of Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad. Malaysia succeeded in diversifying its economy from dependence on exports of raw materials to expansion in manufacturing, services, and tourism. Also, the current Prime Minister continues to pursue pro-business policies .
