Eating Disorders and Female Athletes
INTRODUCTION
Athletes are among the quickest, strongest, most flexible people in the world, so one would expect them to adhere to the latest health and fitness information, right? Not always. The problem is that the athletes often believe that more fit equals less fat. The death of Olympic gymnast Christy Henrich from anorexia nervosa began to bring the topic of athletes and eating disorders to the forefront. Research into the topic of eating disorders and athletes shows a few interesting findings. Most of the studies focus on women and specific sports, namely gymnastics, figure skating, diving, and other weight-dependent sports. Some research, however, shows prevelance findings of eating disorders in female athletes congruent with the general population.
FEMALE ATHLETE TRIAD
The female athlete triad of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis affects many active women, especially those in sports that emphasize appearance or leanness. Physical signs and symptoms include unexplained recurrent or stress fracture, dry hair, low body temperature, lanugo, and fatigue (Joy, Clark, Ireland, Martire, Nattiv, and Varechok, 1997). Prevalence of the triad is hard to assess because data is limited to a few studies. In the United States, studies suggest, (based on limited data) a prevalence in female athletes between 15 percent and 62 percent (Dummer, Rosen, Heusner, et. al 1987; Rosen, Hough 1988; Rosen, McKeag, Hough, et. al, 1986). Women who have the triad can typically be characterized as being a perfectionist with high goals, being very critical of herself and having very high expectations, and having fairly low self esteem (Nattiv, 1997). PAD should be an option to terminally ill patients, which has been defined as an inherent constitutional right by the Supreme Court. Thus the right and judgment should be ultimately our own decisions.
Until this act was passed, when a woman married, any property she owned was legally transferred to her husband. Divorce laws heavily favored men, and a divorced wife could expect to lose any property she possessed before she married. The implications of these two Acts combined, was enough to start women questioning the reasons for them not being able to vote, it started the campaign of votes for women.

One of the hardest pressures that dancers have to get through is the pressure from the media. The media places harsh, rigid, and false ideas of dancers on to the mass public. Constantly bombarded by commercials, magazine ads, posters, etc., the idea of being thin and beautiful is what the society thinks of as the “norm”. The truth is “these ads portray women who have a weight way below average, and have no imperfections” (Karyn p.1). Many ads are airbrushed to give the models the look of being flawless which many women and girls do not realize. Since that look is “virtually impossible to achieve” many dancers will develop an eating disorder feeling that “it is their only road to achieve this goal” of being thin (Karyn p.1). When thinking about it, the whole point of a commercial is essentially to sell happiness. If selling happiness is the goal and the use of models is prevalent in the commercial, then it can be concluded that the only way to achieve happiness is to be just like the commercial by having the product being advertised and looking like the person advertising it.
Women in Texas were fighting to have the right to vote and one of those women was Minnie Ficher Cunningham. She was a pharmacist who quit to become the president of the Galveston Equal Suffrage Association. Her efforts would help Texas women win the right to vote in the primary election of 1918. But the win didn’t come easily. She triumphed by spending endless hours and trying to build support and making savvy political alliances. The 19th Amendment would later be ratified in 1920. This means that when you are classified with osteoporosis, you will always have it and there is no way that you can go back to having strong bone mineral density, and your body will be prone to fractures for the rest of your life. This disease makes your body very weak and fragile, which is opposite from a gymnasts ultimate goal of having a muscular and strong body. Overall, the “Female Athlete Triad” is a very serious condition, and it puts gymnasts bodies in a great amount of danger for injuries, or later in life complications.

Eating disorders are described as an illness involving eating habits that are irregular and an extreme concern with body image or weight. Eating disorders tend to appear during teenage years, but can develop at any age. Although more common in women, eating disorders can affect any age, gender or race. In the United States, over 20 million women and 10 million men are personally affected by eating disorders. There are many different causes of eating disorders such as low self esteem, societal pressures, sexual abuse and the victims perception of food. Eating disorders are unique to the sufferer and often, their perception of themselves is so skewed, they may not be aware they have an eating disorder. Media, for quite some time now, has played a significant part in eating disorders. Magazines with headlines ‘Summer Body’, or ‘Drop LB’s Fast!’ attract the attention of girls who may be insecure with themselves. Television productions such as the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show or American’s Next Top Model, show airbrushed and photoshopped women who have body types that may be unachievable. Those who are suffering from eating disorders can suffer dangerous consequences, and it is important to seek help.

I believe John Dewey was a common sense thinking man and his theories and philosophies that I have read, seem to hold true. Pragmatism, which means work, comes about as wanting the truth; the things that will work and not hear about the things that won’t. I can compare to this in the agriculture industry, as most want to know what will work, in the manufacturing plants or on farms, those workers do not want to hear about things that do not work. In the classroom I can see how many of Dewey’s theories come into practice, keeping students active, the needs and interest; that is all in the agriculture classroom, because those students want to learn, known to be active and create new interest on topics.
To begin with, cell phones are problematic in classrooms because they become distractions to both the students using the phone and to those that are trying to learn. In either case, they will both miss out on the opportunity to learn. According to M.
