The article “The Painless Way to Technical Writing” has some useful tips about technical writing and among them the tip to write on a part of a project is most useful. The hardest part of writing is the overwhelming feeling the writer gets about the whole process. Looking at the whole project as one assignment makes the tasks seems very difficult. Instead, the approach to break down the writing project into smaller tasks would make the job much easier. Reading this tip in the article reminded me of the similar strategies that I have recently read in two self improvement books. The first book titled Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy. One of the strategies the book talks about
is break down bigger tasks into smaller ones and if needed divide the smaller tasks into subcategories. Another book The Practicing Mind: Developing Focus and Discipline in Your Life by Thomas M. Sterner, in which the author emphasizes on focusing the individual process instead of stressing over the goal. This idea of focusing and enjoying the process is rather unique because usually we hear or read about focusing on the goal, but the author explained that you could still achieve the goal by breaking down into processes and enjoy working on each process. I personally haven't used any specific strategies for writing because besides memos and emails, I haven’t done too much writing at work. But I am looking forward to use the tips that I have learned in this article and other books for a situation where I have to write a technical report at work or write some other occasion.
In the article, “Understanding Writing Assignments: Tips and Techniques,” author Dan Melzer shares with his audience seven useful suggestions to keep in mind when starting any writing assignment. Melzer’s first tips are for readers to examine their rubrics for any key verbs that will tell writers what approach and genre their paper should have. Knowing what kind of writing your teacher wants will not only help a writer get started, it will also inform a writer what they can research to view examples. Next, he tells his readers to write for their specific audience, to make sure they know their teacher’s expectations, and to take into account what they have learned in class. Some or all of us get distracted by many things chores, life, kids, work, cat that won’t stop meowing even a simple list that Lammot states is “Nurse Ratchet like listing of things that must be done right this moment” (96). The author says that we need to ignore all distractions no matter how much our brain may scream at us to get the other work done or something bad will happen we must persevere to finish or at least start the paper. Or else it will never get done and you will be putting together a Frankenstein like paper at two in the morning.

For example, for each essay due, there were smaller deadlines that needed to be met. As I kept up with those smaller assignments, the actual large due date was not intimidating and I was able to handle the stress better. According to the reading, Writing as a Mode of Learning by Janet Emig, knowledge is described as “an act of knowing that enters as a passionate contribution of the person to know what is being known, which is a coefficient that is no mere imperfection but a vital component of a person’s knowledge.” Essentially, knowledge is composed of what a person, association or discourse community knows about what is already known in their area of expertise or fully know what could occur in a certain situation, similar to how a rhetor must prepare and know what rhetorical situations might occur at any moment during their speech or writing. Knowledge is created to prepare for various outcomes and situations as goals are being constructed in a discourse community.

I am just beginning my college career and that means many more papers to come. I may not always be so enthusiastic about writing them but as long as I use this strategy to tackle the assignment, it will be fine. Learning to break down a paper into small parts instead of looking at it as one whole, big, daunting assignment has helped me a great deal and allows me to put more focus into each paragraph or topic, resulting in better written papers.
