Introduction
Early childhood is the most mischievous period in the life of a normal child. Usually, teachers find it difficult to retain the attention of the preschoolers for a long time. Read on, to find activities which increase the attention span of a preschooler without much effort.
Preschoolers can’t concentrate on an activity for a long time. They can't remain attentive for more than three or four minutes on a particular matter. Teaches should plan methods, through which, they can increase this time span in a periodic way rather than attempting for a sudden increase.
Story Reading:
Preschoolers love to hear stories. Read to them loudly for four or five minutes. Carefully choose stories which can arouse interest in the minds of preschooler, so that he/she should insist on hearing the rest of the story. Small pictorial stories about natural phenomenon like rain, solar system, funny detective stories and animal stories can be used. Read continuously for a few minutes, carefully stop at that point where preschooler’s inquisitiveness will be aroused and then give them some time to relax. Wait till they request to hear the rest. Initially allow preschoolers to interrupt your reading with their own questions but slowly decrease the number of questions that can be asked in each session. Clay and Building Blocks
As most preschoolers like clay modeling and building blocks, teachers can use them too. Make models of sphere or box. Instruct preschoolers to make a similar one in size, shape and color. Let them take their own time. Once they have finished the work show them a bit more complicated model and repeat the above activity. The same technique can be used with building blocks too.
Conclusion
Like children of all other ages, preschoolers too love to keep of playing computer games and watching TV shows. Even though this can retain the attention for a long time, teachers should not allow preschoolers to spend more time on this, as it will harm both his/her mental and physical growth. The most important thing which a preschool teacher should remember is that, she/he should select only those activities which his/her preschoolers are interested in.
Children can greatly benefit from having chances to create connections to the real world in their play space, waiting for the fruit on the fruit trees to ripen or continuously checking to see if their seeds have sprouted all provide both connections to the real world ,as well as expanding developmental skills and knowledge. An ideal learning environment for children does not necessarily need to cost a lot of money to establish and maintain, using items found out the natural environment can often spark creativity and connections with children. Once your baby is old enough to follow what you are reading it would be a good idea to read them simpmle stories about fimilar day to day routines i.e. Getting up and ready, going to school, having dinner, a bath and a bed time routine. I observed toddlers at the Little Sprouts Early Education and Child Care Center. Upon entering I did had certain expectations and a sense of what I was prepared to observe. However, I was very surprised in my observations. All the children were well behaved and they got along. It was interesting to see how different each toddler was and their physical and intellectual abilities. The toddlers engaged in all types of play including imaginative, active, dramatic, pretend, and cooperative play. Play is significantly important in child development, especially in early childhood because it allows children to explore and learn new things. Children develop a number of skills during play. They develop in social, emotional, language, thinking, and nurturing skills. Language developmentalists believe that play is the most productive and the most enjoyable activity that children engage in (Berger, 2015).
For instance, play area will have the words play area, sleep area will have the words sleep area, the reading area will have the words reading area etc… In the reading area will have books that I will read to the children every day. I will read them stories that have big bright pictures that they will be able to see. I will ask them questions and encourage them to ask me questions about the pictures and the stories. This is to gauge their understanding of what they think is happening in the story vs what they think is happening in the pictures.
