There are all types of transactions that people engage in via the internet or mobile phone on a daily basis. I personally could not imagine a world without the capability to do this. E-commerce and M-commerce make all of our online and mobile transactions possible. In this paper, I will describe the steps new e-businesses need to adopt to have a successful online presence. In addition, the required skills, tools, and challenges of electronic and mobile commerce will also be discussed. Dictionary.com defines E-commerce as: business that is transacted by transferring data electronically, especially over the internet (dictionary.com). While M-commerce is defined as: business that is conducted on the internet through the use of cell phones or other wireless, handheld electronic devices (dictionary.com). To enable people to complete the large number of transactions, new e-businesses are created. Some initial steps to follow include: identify potential e-business initiatives, analyze the functional scope of e-business initiatives, analyze the sustainability of benefits from e-business initiatives and prioritize e-business initiatives (Basu, Muylle, 2007). By identifying potential E-business initiatives, online companies can better understand their customers as well as the supply chain of their customers and competitors (Basu, Muylle, 2007). In summary, E-commerce and M-commerce have not yet reached their full potential. New electronic and mobile businesses must follow the already established steps to even have a chance for success. By identifying e-business initiatives, understanding the functional scope of an e-business initiative, exploiting the benefits from e-business initiatives and prioritizing initiatives; a company improves its percentage to compete in their specific market. E-commerce and M-commerce is an integral part of our society and will only continue to grow as the years go by.
In the last decade, wireless communications technology has grown rapidly in the global business community. The convergence of two key wireless technologies- mobile wireless communications and the internet has presented a plethora of opportunities for organizations through mobile business hereinafter referred to simply as m-business. M-business is a new business model which utilizes the internet for data/voice transmission through the deployment of wireless devices like smart phones, tablets and e-purses (Gartner, n.d. ). According to Picoto, Belanger and Palma-dos-Reis (2013) m-business has revolutionized the way organizations conduct business as customers are increasingly resorting to m-business. This pragmatic shift can be explained by the reliance on mobile devices for example smart phones to shop online. Undoubtedly, the market for m-business is on an upward growth curve with forecasts establishing higher global uptakes in coming years (Picoto, Belanger, & Palma-dos-Reis, 2013). With such high growth potential, one cannot help but ask what value m-business holds for contemporary organizations?
