INTRODUCTION ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ To see the dysfunctional family is expected from time to time. They are found in a series on television, in the media, in the home one may visit and in the gossip one may hear. This family is usually identifiable as farce and amusing, it carries the type of presence some wish were around as they were growing up. However, for some children the dysfunctional family is their very life, and they are not very amused nor are they very grateful. In fact, they are being abused. The truth is that some dysfunctional families, those that are rather severely dysfunctional, are very simply abusive and neglectful families. Regrettably, for the children growing up in these severely dysfunctional families, emotional abuse and neglect …show more content…
is often a side effect. PARAGRAPH 1 - WHAT IS EA&N ❤❤❤ Though childhood emotional abuse is not as easily identifiable as childhood physical abuse or as repugnant or taboo as childhood sexual abuse, it is just as serious and severe with detrimental effects lasting into adulthood. Emotional abuse too has many disguises, it is name calling as well as threatening, rejecting, mocking, shaming, embarrassing, dominating and traumatizing the child. (THE LONG SHADOW) Moreover, emotional abuse is not just the manipulation of language to cause harm, but the behavior a child is exposed to as well. For example, a child who is being emotionally abused may also be exposed to the torture and killing of their beloved pet by a caregiver as apart of the abuse. (THE LONG SHADOW) Furthermore, the child may be neglected as well, which is where the caregiver is failing the child in aspects like providing food, clothing, medical treatment and other basic necessities. Neglect too may cause emotional damage. (THE LONG SHADOW) PARAGRAPH 2 - WHO EA&N ❤❤❤❤ Furthermore, it is thought that childhood emotional abuse and neglect is often a product of parental dysfunction or mental illness solely, however that is far from the truth. As any child can become a victim, any parent or caregiver can become a perpetrator, yet there are societal and psychological aspects that contribute to the likelihood of one becoming a perpetrator of emotional abuse and neglect. For example, when a parent or caregiver suffers from depression they are at risk of becoming neglectful because this mental illness has influenced the caregivers ability to interact with and care for their children. Moreover, substance abuse can certainly play a role in abuse and neglect as those under the influence of mind altering substances may face the same challenges as those suffering from depression, like withdrawing from their responsibilities and losing the ability or desire to care. (THE LONG SHADOW) "Nevertheless, a single factor may not lead to abuse, but in combination they can create the social and emotional pressures that lead to emotional abuse. Specific types of problems that can contribute to emotional abuse are social problems that can contribute to family stress (unemployment, poverty, isolation from relatives and friends, divorce, death, immature parents), health crises (illness of a family member, disability of a family member, drug and alcohol abuse within the family), and mental health problems (mental disability, depression)." (EMOTIONAL CHILD ABUSE) PARAGRAPH 3 CHILDHOOD IMPACT ❤ Identifying if a child has been emotionally abused and neglected early on is crucial for the child's short and long term recovery and development.
This is because emotional abuse and neglect has physical, psychological, behavioral and societal consequences for the child. (LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES) For example, physical consequences include brain impairment and stagnant development, this is a special concern as the focal time of adolescence is within the near future. As a result of these physical consequences, psychological consequences may arise too like emotional immaturity and difficulties as well as cognitive delays. Moreover, these children are now at a higher risk of developing mental illnesses, behavioral issues and engaging in dangerous behaviors like drug abuse, unsafe sex and abusing others themselves too. (LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES) Luckily, this will not be the result for all emotionally abused and neglected children, but there are variables that may increase the chances of this fate. Variables include the child's age at the time of the abuse and neglect, the frequency, duration and severity of the abuse and neglect and the present relationship between the victim and perpetrator. CONSEQUENCES) PARAGRAPH 4 ADULTHOOD ❤❤❤❤ Nonetheless, for many children the consequences of emotional abuse and neglect follow them into adolescence and adulthood.
For example, having suffered from emotional abuse and neglect in their childhood many adult survivors believe that any abuse or unhealthy aspects they experience from one another in interpersonal or romantic relationships is their fault. This is because they have been led to believe and internalize abusive messages from their childhood. This is especially common in female survivors. Furthermore, some children never develop proper coping mechanisms during their childhood and it follows them into adolescence and adulthood. Though these coping mechanisms may have worked in their childhood, they now negatively impact daily functioning. Cognitive distortions also come into play during adolescence and adulthood, these distortions influence the way the survivor views the self and the world. They too increase the chances at emotional distress and the development of mental illnesses. (THE LONG SHADOW) A common behavioral indicator of a child being emotionally abused and neglected is antisocial behavior, and sadly social difficulties continue to manifest into adolescence and adulthood like attachment issues, aggression and inappropriate behavior. (LONG TERM
CONSEQUENCES) Nevertheless, there are opportunities and resources available for helping victims of childhood emotional abuse and neglect. People involved in the child's life can take action and report the suspected or confirmed abuse. A children's protection agency will then usually step in and investigate the report. Skilled and educated professionals, like a child protection worker, physicians, psychiatrists and childcare staff are usually involved. (EMOTIONAL CHILD ABUSE) Once the abuse and neglect is confirmed, professionals involved can lead both the victim and the perpetrator to the appropriate resources needed for help and recovery. Often trauma informed practices come into play, as these practices and services are designed to work with victims of abuse. "The importance of this approach has become especially evident in the child welfare system, as a majority of children and families involved with child welfare have experienced some form of past trauma. When human service systems recognize and respond to the impact of trauma and use this knowledge to adapt polices and practices, children, youth and families benefit (Wilson, 2012)." (LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES)
It is important to appreciate that these issues are very complex, and to be familiar with how abuse and neglect can affect various aspects of a person's life. Child abuse does not affect every person the same. The extremity of the abuse and different situations determine the effect. Some people could live on to become great people and do great things. They don’t look at the abuse as something negative but rather as something that made them strong and made them believe that they were better and could do better than the situation that they were in. Dealing with abuse after it is over is the toughest thing to handle, most people that could afford therapy go to it, but since most people can‘t afford it they try to deal with it the best they can. Although in most cases the child is removed from the home that the abuse is happening in, sometimes child abuse can slip by unnoticed and that can have severe consequences on the child as well as others.
1.When a youth goes through suffering (ex. domestic violence, abusive relationships, etc.), numerous complications emerge throughout their development. They may be consumed by irritability, suspicion, and trust issues and have behavioural patterns, including paranoia, dishonesty, and impulsive behaviour. Others develop personality disorders similar to PTSD. The long-term effects of child abuse are also shown through the movie character Will Hunting who suffered child abuse in foster care and now is an impulsive man who refuses to reach out for help. Although, there are exceptions for negative development in those who have experienced childhood trauma.
Abuse of children has become a major social problem and a main cause of many people's suffering and personal problems. Neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse have an immediate and long-term effects on a child's development. The long-term effects of abuse and neglect of a child can be seen in psychiatric disorders, increased rates of substance abuse, and relationship difficulties. Child abuse and neglect is a huge problem. Parents who abuse are people who have been abused and neglected themselves as children(Long Term Consequences).
In the book Stones by William Bell it is tells a story on prejudice, the supernatural, history, it’s continuous cycle of racism, and labelling. One of the most underlying themes in the novel is Parent-Youth Relationships. Majority of the book touches base on the two main characters; Garnet Havelock and Raphella Skye’s dysfunction within both their families, the main relationships are Garnet & his Mom, Garnet & his Dad, and Raphella and her Mom. The relationship between Garnet and his Mom is offbeat because they are neither close and neither distant from each other, they have each other best interest but aren’t best friends. Garnet and
Child neglect and abuse is an unfortunate reality for many children today. It can have significant developmental impacts on children until they are an adult. Unfortunately it is not noticed until the damage is already done. Parents are the ones that are supposed to take care of their child. The consequences of a child getting mistreated young may endure long after the neglect occurs. People having children and not ready to be parents. Scaring the child for life because they decided that is was fun to beat on their child and abuse them mentally, and some even sexually. The effects can appear in all aspects of life, rather it is psychological or behavioral. There are three main effects of neglect and abuse that can range from minor physical injuries, not getting along with others, or can become aggressive and affect them later on in life.
...l parents as soon as the home is safe again. For some cases recurrent maltreatment occurs when the child is reunified with the biological parents or original caregivers. Children who are abused can display behavioral problems which can impact many areas in their life. They tend to act out at school and have low academic performance (Webb, 2007). They may also internalize their behavior by becoming depressed and showing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Child maltreatment not only affects the child that is being abused, but the family system as well. Some acts of child abuse can be prosecuted with criminal charges which could result in jail time and other serious punishments. Children show the affects of their maltreatment throughout their life through their behaviors. Child abuse is a serious problem that needs to be prohibited by all agencies.
Child maltreatment can affect any child, usually aged 0-18, and it occurs across socioeconomic, religious, ethnic or even educational backgrounds. Arguably, child abuse and neglect is a violation of basic human rights of a child resulting from social, familial, psychological and economic factors (Kiran, 2011). Familial factors include lack of support, poverty, single parenthood, and domestic violence among others, (McCoy and Keen, 2009). The common types of child maltreatment include physical abuse, emotional maltreatment, neglect, and sexual abuse among others. Abuse and neglect can lead to a variety of impacts on children and young people such as physical, behavioral as well as psychological consequences which will affect the development and growth of the child either positively or negatively based on the environment and agency. More so, emotional, cognitive and physical developmental impacts from child neglect in the early stages of childhood can be carried on into adulthood. Research findings reveal that the experience of maltreatment can cause major long-term consequences on all aspects of a child’s health, growth as well as intellectual development and mental wellbeing, and these effects can impair their functioning as adults. Commonly, the act of abuse/ or neglect toward a child affects the child’s physical, behavioral development and growth, which can be positive or negative, depending on the child’s environment and agency. Another way to understand how the act has affected the child is to look at the child for who they are, and interviewing and observing their behaviors of their everyday life.
Although all therapists are aware of the childhood emotional abuse issue, it is possible that only few therapists understand the scope of the issue. Emotional maltreatment is harder to detect than other forms of abuse because it is more subtle. When Child Protective Services (CPS) conduct family assessments, it is the hardest form of abuse to prove because parents are very open about the topic and emotional abuse does not leave any physical evidence behind. However, it certainly influences a child's self-esteem, promotes the feeling of guilt, insecurity, and creates the inability to form stable relationships during adulthood. Although some behavioral disorders are related to emotional abuse, it is not possible to predict it correctly because the patterns can deviate significantly as each child displays different outcomes. Emotional abuse is often considered a suitable form of disciplinary measures, but even excessive practice of verbal abuse can create negative outcomes, so the parents apparently take most of the responsibility because of their inability to raise their child without resorting to violence. Besides parental education, other courses of action will be required because the abuse rates for emotional abuse and other types of child abuse are extremely high, so the issue demands urgent action to prevent further impairment on healthy psychological development in children. However, the entire responsibility should not be on mental health care professionals, but it should be distributed equally through society and all social agents that determine public opinions and acceptable forms of behavior. The best approach to preventing childhood emotional abuse is through influencing several social factors for prevention and increasin...
We’ll start with child abuse victims and the affects and reasons of this abuse. There are four types of child abuse and I will list them in order from least to greatest, neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Neglect takes first with the NCVS having 54% reports of child neglect in 2007. Neglect is a very serious form of abuse it is the failure for a parent or guardian to provide for a child’s basic needs, including physical and educational needs. We grow and development drastically in the first twelve years of our life so when parental guidance and love is absent it affects a child’s developmental skills along with learning right from wrong. Many forms of neglect occur in larger households and with households with domestic violence. Many parents with multiple kids become too busy focusing on the older children they tend to forget the youngest one. So it’s common for a three year old to walk out of the front door and on to the street when no one is there to tell him or...
When a child has been physically abused, there are noticeable bruises, or other effects on the person. On the other hand, most people do not recognize or even know the effects of emotional abuse. Emotional abuse can deeply wound a child, and as the child grows, the scars will remain; the scars that people do not see that can cause a lifetime of suffering. These invisible scars can affect a person’s development as they struggle to accept themselves from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. Emotional abuse negatively impacts an individual’s self-esteem, which can in turn, cause depression and substance abuse later in adulthood.
Trauma relates to a type of damage to the mind that comes from a severely distressing event. A traumatic event relates to an experience or repeating events that overwhelmingly precipitated in weeks, months, or decades as one tries to cope with the current situations that can cause negative consequences. People’s general reaction to these events includes intense fear, helplessness or horror. When children experience trauma, they show disorganized or agitative behavior. In addition, the trigger of traumas includes some of the following, harassment, embarrassment, abandonment, abusive relationships, rejection, co-dependence, and many others. Long-term exposure to these events, homelessness, and mild abuse general psychological
There are different kinds of physical abuse, not only hitting or beating but also sexual abuse and neglect. Sign of physical abuse are bruises, unexplained sprains and fractures. There are two different types of neglect. There is neglect when one’s parents are incapable of taking care of their children do to their own mental illness. This type of neglect affects how children interact with their parents. If their mother or father suffer from depression it will affect the way, the child learns how to interact with the world they are disconnected because their parents are. Another form of neglect is that the parents are full aware and decided not to take care of their child. This will also make it harder for children to form bounds with other latter on in life. A sign of neglect is poor hygiene, clothing that is dirty or ripped and lack of medical treatment. Then there is sexual abuse, sexual abuse teaches some children that love is associated with physical acts. It also affects the way children trust. Sign of sexual abuse are vaginal infections and wetting or soiling of the
Today child neglect is the largest part of child abuse in the United States, and almost two-thirds of all reported cases in child protective services is neglect (Dubowitz). Before the 1970’s child abuse mostly referred to physical abuse; however, now it encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect (Compton’s). Physical abuse is when a child is hurt by getting hit, punched, kicked, or any other form of beating by an adult (Compton’s). This abuse will only harm the child physically and though it is horrific and can lead to long term effects it will normally only lead to violence. Emotional abuse is when an adult is hateful to the child by calling him names, and another form of emotional abuse is when an adult is punishing a child in a way that will cause him mental trauma (Compton’s). Emotional abuse is terrible for the child’s self-esteem however they can go and learn that they are important to the world by their contributions. Sexual abuse is when a child is touched inappropriately or molested (Compton’s). This is detrimental to a child but in most cases the child will block this out for when they grow older it is like it never happened which will cause no harm to their mental state. Neglect is when an adult will not seek medical help for their child and will not provide them with food, shelter, clothing, or emotional support (Sullivan). This is where the real trauma takes place on a child. The child will not suffer from being hit but they suffer from starving until someone is kind enough to feed them or they die from malnutrition. The child will not suffer from a parent calling them names but they might never know if their parent knows their name or cares to even speak to th...
One of the most obvious and damaging results of child abuse is death; however, research illustrating the effects on a growing child who has been abused has demonstrated many other lifelong negative factors (Felitti, Anda, Nordenberg, Williamson, Spitz, Edwards, Koss, Marks, 1998). In consonance children who suffer from abuse can show signs of depression, social withdraw, and even violent behavior. As a child grows older, they may suffer from poor physical health, such as high blood pressure, obesity, stress, and psychological disorders and disabilities (Herronkohl, T., Hong, Klika, and Herronkohl, R., 2013). Child abuse and neglect have also been associated with depression, anger disorders, and post-traumatic
As I said before, many people don’t realize what the consequences of child abuse can do to a child. When a child is abused the may develop a range of maladaptive, anti-social, and self-destructive behaviors and thoughts by trying to cope with the abuse that is in their life. They may blame themselves for what is happening in their homes. Children who are abused also don’t have the ability to “spread their wings” and experience new things. Parents who abuse their children usually have a very tight restraint on them and don’t allow them to be able to experience new things. Children then lose their curiosity and wonder and quit trying new things and exercising their mind.
