For the ME 491 project assigned by Dr. Beth Todd, Zack Gilbert and Parker Barton propose the topic of Dynamic Bullet-Body Interactions and Ballistics. Our main focus for this project will be to discuss how the human body reacts to bullet penetration as well as blunt-force trauma, and how engineering has been used to create ballistics gel that replicates these responses.
First, we plan to research and discuss how the human body reacts to bullet trauma; i.e. a torso bullet wound. With bullet penetration being the worst-case scenario, we must first know the possible injuries as well as the likelihood of death for certain bullet locations. After discussing the possible short-term and long-term effects of bullet penetration, we can detail how
At approximately 0230 hours on February 16, 2016, a male subject was struck on the left side of his face by a pistol. Rashaun Grant, victim of the assault, was struck by the suspect, Rashaun Grant, after an argument occurred. Rashaun was transported to Hampton Regional Medical Center by his mother. The suspect fled the scene before Law Enforcement arrival.

Thirty years of medical practice have brought me into close contact with the living victims of gun violence: young men languishing in LTACS or nursing homes, some on ventilators, quadriplegics in motorized wheelchairs operated with sip-and-puff controllers; mothers and grandmothers initially grieving and then deeply depressed and sickened over their loss. What I have to offer these victims is not much: antibiotics to treat recurrent infections, dressings to cover the inexorable emergence of pressure ulcers, antidepressants and anxiolytics to assuage the fear, the guilt, the anxiety and the abiding dysphoria that result from lives ruined by gun violence.

Assault weapons have been labeled as the number one source for mass killings in America. The idea that a weapon can fire a large amount of bullets at a remarkable speed can be used for recreational use was thought of otherwise. This type of weaponry was made for one reason and that is to eliminate as many people as possible and accomplish it in a reasonably fast time. The problem is everywhere and to help control the issue the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to enacting and enforcing gun...
Gun violence has been and continues to be one of the major problems in American. The U.S. has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world and consequently the highest rate of gun violence and fatalities compared to other developed countries. In a study by the University of Sydney it is estimated that there are 270,000,000 to 310,000,000 guns in the United States. According to the same study in 2010 there were 31,672 fatalities caused by firearms and on the following year the number went up to 32,163. Homicides resulting from guns are high in the United States and they are claiming more than eleven thousand lives every year (Guns in the United States: Firearms, Armed Violence and Gun Law). According to Vision for Humanity, an initiative for the Economics and Peace, the United States is ranked 99 out of 162 countries in the 2013 global peace index, homicide rates and violent crimes are among the various criteria used to determine the ranking (Vision of Humanity). Mass shootings at work places, schools, shopping malls and places of worship are happening in an a...
Sixteen die from gun related wounds (Massey, 1998). The majority of these statistics are related to abused children from home settings, which will cause significant damage to how the child deals with everyday situations in settings out of the home.
The Kansas City Gun Experiment was a study that took place between 1992 and 1993. The goal of the study was to examine if increased police patrol in a “hot spot” of the city would help to reduce the amount of gun-related crime. The data collected by the research team was solely quantitative as it mainly consisted of statistics and other data numerical in nature of the increase/decrease of gun violence in these beats. After the twenty-nine week period of the study, the experiment’s findings showed that an increase in police patrol, as well as seizure of illegally carried guns, did help to eliminate gun-related crimes.
Each year in the US, around 30,000 people die from gunfire. Around half of these are murders, a little less than half are suicide, and the rest are lethal accidents. Of the annual 30,000 death toll, several hundred of the victims are children (Counterpoint: Gun Control Saves Lives).
“All the other kids with the pumped up kicks, You better run, better run, outrun my gun.” Not if you are wearing bulletproof armor! This song is by Foster the People. This illustrates the importance of wearing bullet-proof armor, such as a vest. Many people argue the law enforcement should wear bulletproof vests because of the officer fatalities, instead of ordinary citizens who aren’t open to harm. This type of protection must be strong, a life saver, and made to the highest standard. It must be used for: safety, have a certain level of protection, and legally worn.
Someone is identified as the shooter, someone the survivor, someone the witness, someone the traumatized, and someone the dead. When the weapon is high-caliber, the impact is deadlier. As aforementioned, as a community, we must advocate for rational gun laws which prohibit sales, trades and use of firearms to citizens who do not meet the criteria established by the federal government, state agencies and its guidelines. Background checks to include information on disqualified individuals such as the mentally ill must be universal. Education of firearms must begin at home and instilled in our youth, most incidences gun violence stem from lack of edification, training and
