The Kansas City Gun Experiment was a study that took place between 1992 and 1993. The goal of the study was to examine if increased police patrol in a “hot spot” of the city would help to reduce the amount of gun-related crime. The data collected by the research team was solely quantitative as it mainly consisted of statistics and other data numerical in nature of the increase/decrease of gun violence in these beats. After the twenty-nine week period of the study, the experiment’s findings showed that an increase in police patrol, as well as seizure of illegally carried guns, did help to eliminate gun-related crimes.
Within the target site of the experiment, researchers wanted to answer their hypothesis; hypothesis was that increased police

Because of budget constraints, the study only used one beat to collect data on the effects of increasing police patrol. Even though money was an issue, the experiment could have yielded better data by repeating the experiment multiple times to see if the data they collected would be reliable. The experiment also took place during the winter. The report of the study even noted that there was some evidence that crime activity levels declined, just as street activity does, because of colder weather. Although the design of the study contained weaknesses, some of the methods used by the researchers worked well for this type of study. One of the strengths of this experiment was the different methods used to acquire illegal guns in the beat. By using a variation of ways to seize illegal weapons in the “hot spot,” it allowed officers to increase their chances of finding more illegal guns. Using different methods of search also could have led to greater number of potential offenders to know that officers were looking for illegal weapons and refrained from offending. Another strength of the study includes the relatively inexpensive method to try to answer their hypothesis. Increasing police patrol is one of the more inexpensive methods and it did manage to decrease the number of gun crimes and homicide in the

In Firearms: A Global History to 1700, Kenneth Chase investigates why Europe perfected firearms when the Chinese invented them. Kenneth Chase is an attorney at law who received his PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University. He uses primary sources in the form of texts and paintings as well as secondary sources in this monograph to trace the origin and spread of firearms. He also uses these sources to characterize militaries and determine why they used or did not use firearms. Chase dismisses the notion that the discrepancy between Eastern and Western firearms development was the result of cultural aversion. If anything, he argues that Europeans were more averse to firearms due to its association to Satan and a general
They find the stops "show few significant effects of several SQF [stop, question, and frisk] measures on precinct robbery and burglary rates."
In looking at the Kansas City Patrol Experiment, it appears that adding more police officers has little or no affect on arrests or the crime rate. Please review the study and explain why more police does not mean less crime. Due Date March 11, 2005

Guns are not the trouble, people are. The United States is #1 in world gun ownership, and yet is only 28th in the world in gun murders per 100,000 people. The number of unintentional fatalities due to firearms declined by 58 percent between 1991 and 2011 Based on these facts, one can see the guns not the causes of gun violence. moreover, civilians who get permits take gun safety courses and have criminal background...
In this article the author talks about the relationship between gun control laws and gun ownership rates in relation to crime rates. He informs his readers of the studies to determine whether gun ownership rates have any effect on criminal activity being that firearms are the leading cause of murders; and if by making gun control laws stricter will it lower the violent crime rates, and overall homicide rates.

The authors also explain that there are no real statistics to help explain how many times an officer has used a firearm. The text explains that there is no significant data to help explain police shootings and how many occur each year (Kappeler & Potter, 2005). Most of the data that can be found does not clearly state the numbers of times a firearm was used. Majority of data is found through data bases such as Vital Statistics (Kappeler & Potter, 2005). Even data bases such as Vital Statistics do not provide clear information on police
Police have cracked down on the drug war in these areas. For years the war on drugs has brought down many lives, brought crime to power that is now diminished, and strengthened the police force. The police force has new equipment and weaponry far superior to the gangs. Technology, such as drones and new ways to gather data have put police one step ahead of crime. Brian Doherty who wrote “You Know Less Than You Think About Guns stated, that “One weak- gun-law state, Louisiana, were taken out of the equation, "the remaining nine lowest-regulation states have an average gun homicide rate of 2.8 per 100,000, which is 12.5% less than the average of the ten states with the strictest gun control laws," he found. Neil Howe, from “what’s behind in the world of crime mention he fact quoted “the rate of violent crime victimizations . . . violence has subsided the most. Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles have experienced 76% and 90% decreases in the murder rate since 1992, respectively.” These statistics prove good guns lower crime putting a fallacy in gun
middle of paper ... ... Law enforcement and criminal imprisonment have more of an effect on crime than any gun control law. Gun education and hunter’s education also improved. Focusing efforts on the root of the problem has yielded results and lowered crime.
Gun control would place harsher restrictions on obtaining firearms, and in some cases, complete bans on some types of firearms. However, gun control and weapons bans rarely accomplish their goals and have a minimal effect on crime. Many gun control activists associate greater control with less crime. However, they overlook the root causes of firearm-related crime and already declining crime rates. Some misattribute such decreases to gun control laws already in place, neglecting to make connections between what the law does, and what crimes decreased. Firearms play an important role in defense of life and property not only for citizens, but for law enforcement individuals as well. Though some state that higher gun control would protect citizens, there is no correlation between state murder rates and gun control laws. Rather, there is a direct correlation regard murder rates and poverty. Many also neglect to state that the United State has very few gun laws compared to many European countries and that these countries have much higher crime rates. In addition, many forget to mention the already sharply declining crime rates of the United States, including declining homicide rates and firearm-related crimes. Those who do mention such decrease mistakenly
Gun violence is a problem that has been growing in many cities across the United States. It is important for Federal and local Law Enforcement agencies to work together to enforce the Project Safe Neighborhoods and other projects similar in cities and communities where the homicide and gun violence rates are crucially high. It is each officer’s duty to make sure we do our duty as Law Enforcement to provide safe neighborhoods and save lives every day. By placing Project Safe Neighborhoods in high crime areas, the project will put in place and enforce new programs and policies for those who have committed gun crimes and are reoccurring felons. Through the use of deterrence it is Law Enforcements objective to prevent individuals from committing illegal acts by showing or telling individuals or felons what will happen to them if they commit whatever illegal act it may be.
Crime Analysis has many benefits to the community. Community engagement, targeted initiatives, strategic use of resources, and data-driven decision-making contribute to decreasing crime. Crime prevention and community satisfaction with police services, while linked to the number of officers on the streets, does not depend entirely on the visibility of patrol officers. Community engagement, targeted initiatives, strategic use of resources, and data-driven decision-making contribute to decreasing crime. So in closing I believe that departments that take the positive elements of foot patrols and combine their efforts with crime analysis that focuses on the time, location, and type of crime, may use the findings to develop strategies to decrease crime and enhance the quality of life in their communities.
