“The invention of basketball was not an accident. It was developed to meet a need. Those boys simply would not play “Drop the Handkerchief.”- James Naismith. Since the creation of basketball, people have fallen in love with the sport. People’s love of basketball has driven change and improvement in all aspects of the game. Basketball is dated back to December 1891. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, was a physical education teacher at Men’s Christian Association Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. James was given an assignment by Luther Halsey Gulick to create an indoor game in 14 days for his class. Two previous instructors had failed to come up with an indoor game. The NBA was created when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) merged together into one association. The NBA was founded in New York, New York on June 6, 1946. The first NBA game ever played was on November 1, 1946. Later the WNBA was created so that women could play professional basketball. It was founded on April 24, 1996. It was originally a counterpart of the NBA but later broke off. The first game played for the WNBA was on June 21, 1997. The NCAA is the association for all college sports including basketball. It was founded on March 31, 1906. The first March Madness tournament contained eight teams and was single elimination. In 1939, Oregon beat Ohio State for the first boys' basketball March Madness Tournament. Today in March Madness 64 teams play in the tournament. Other countries have basketball leagues for the players there as well. In Turkey, their league is the Turkish Basketball Super League which was founded in 1966. Germany has Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga, founded in 1996. Australia’s National Basketball League from Australia was founded in 1979.
