Is basketball overtaking soccer in the far future?
Mostly everybody reading this article would very fairly agree on the fact that soccer has gained its position as the world’s most popular sport in the past few decades, with the emergence of billion dollars teams that compete in league matches as well as the World Cup tournament. However countries like China and Philippines are way out of this influence and for them basketball still remains the No.1 sport till date. There is hardly any American kid that doesn’t watch or play soccer in this era. But despite its tremendous popularity, the brutal nature of the game has made many parents reluctant to let their children participate in this game. Though most of the people still watch matches on television, the soccer world is getting deprived of youth players day by day. In contrast, interest in basketball has been growing and this sport is on the verge of becoming America’s favorite in the next few years.

Not expected to happen overnight, but the chances are that basketball might replace soccer as the dominating sport in the sports realm. Why is it so? Well, nobody can deny the fact that soccer is ten times older than basketball and has strengthened its position as the universal sport over a period of many years but as it seems, basketball is a more convenient recreational sport.

Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”.
