Millions of Americans die in car accidents every year. Because of this staggering statistic, many states have recently begun making it illegal to use hand-held cell phones while driving. I believe this decision was rightly made and should be actively enforced in all fifty states. Although cell phones are helpful, using them while driving needs to be nationally unlawful because it takes the driver's attention off of driving and it puts everyone on the road at risk of danger. If a driver is using a cell phone while behind the wheel, their attention is not fully on the road. As a licensed driver myself, I know first hand that you must keep a constant watch on the road ahead of you, as well as on the cars surrounding you while driving. The …show more content…
Not only does this cause the risk of an accident, but it can teach new drivers bad habits. Using the the basic monkey see, monkey do philosophy, young drivers could see a driver displaying distracted driving, and replicate the dangerous behavior. Driving while using a cell phone not only puts the driver in danger, but it also puts other in harm's way. Every time I say goodbye to my mom before driving, she tells me, "Be aware of your surroundings". I take this proverb very seriously because although I may be paying full attention to the road and driving cautiously, not all other drivers are. While driving, you are at the mercy of other cars that you share the road with. I have a family friend who's daughter was hit and killed by a man who was texting and driving. This devastating accident was caused by someone who was simply not patient enough to answer their phone at another time. The man lives a life full of regret and sorrow, and the family lives with the daily reminder that their daughter was unfairly taken away from them. This heartbreaking loss could have been completely avoided if he simply would have waited to use his phone at a safer time. It is unfair to put innocent people at risk just because a driver is being
The several effects of distracted driving are deadly. Andrew Lavallee points out that “texting while driving is unsafe. Not only are a driver’s eyes off the road, one or both hands are off the wheel.” “We think it is incompatible with safe driving” (qtd. in Lavallee). “Study upon study showed that talking on a cellphone was far more dangerous than she’d realized – that a driver on a phone had the same reaction speed as someone legally intoxicated, that those talking on a phone behind the wheel are four times as likely to crash” (qtd. in Hanes). Stephanie Hanes also mentions that, “Unlike a conversation with a passenger, the electronic conversation takes a driver into a virtual space away from the road.” Subsequently, this causes severe problems and deadly
Texting and Driving has been a huge factor in accidents. More and more cities are starting to make cell phone use illegal to prevent many life threatening accidents. A phone call and text message can wait. You never know as drivers what the people are doing around you are doing unless you are watching your surroundings. The driver might be a really good driver and might be paying some attention to the road while you are on your phone but the road needs all of the drivers attention so that prevention of accidents is at its
Those that think it is ok to text and drive do not realize how much harm, and danger they are putting their lives at, and the lives of others that are on the road as well. Even if one thinks that they are a good enough driver to be on their phone while they drive, still are not guaranteed that they will not get in an accident. No matter how much someone has been driving, or how good they are does not mean they should be using their phones, because just by taking a glance at their phone for a second could instantly change their lives, if they were to ever get in a car crash, or hurt another human
One of the dangers of texting while driving at the same time is the attention it takes away from the road. A driver, who is focused on looking at their phone, is not paying enough attention to other cars or what is happening around them. Something as simple as a car stopping in front of them can cause serious damage to the driver and to the other car. “Texting” while driving is the act of composing, sending, or reading text messages, email, or making other similar use of the internet on a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle, such as an automobile, truck, or train (Reuters). Many people and authorities have viewed it as a dangerous practice. It is on occasion like this, where familiarity with the road and surrounding will not make it easier for the driver to look at their cell phone. The probabilities of drivers texting on the cell phone and getting into accidents are only getting higher. Cell phone use while driving accounts for a major cause of
Opening/Attention: Driving battle of sexes have been won by women! Although, boys since the early childhood are motivated to have more interest per cars than girls are, they not become better drivers when grow up. Spoken Link/Transition: Men drive fast and often without seatbelts. Men drive more often with influence of alcohol. The sad story that I will tell you is a reflex of this terrible combination.
First and foremost, the risk of using a phone while driving is a big chance of an accident more than what the people think. According to the Harvard study “Texting while driving and other forms of distracted driving are responsible for more than 1 million crashes, 400,000 injuries, and 3,000 deaths in the U.S. each year—and those numbers are likely to in...
Over the last few decades, the use of cell phones has become a very common tool. Furthermore, Technology has certainly advanced, and the cell phone is becoming the most preferred mode of communication. The demand for a cell phone is growing every day. In addition, the use of wireless technology is affordable, and anyone can buy a cell phone at a reasonable price. They come in all shapes and sizes. They range from black to bright metallic white. American public use of cell phones is increasing everyday. As the number of people using cell phones increase, the use of cell phones while driving will also increase on our streets and highways. At the same rate, motorists still converse on cell phones and write text messages while driving. Motorist will also engage in other activities apart from driving. For example, drivers will text when driving, and they will dial numbers. Drivers will receive calls and converse with the recipient for long periods. Again, driving demands your full attention, and your concentration needed when talking on the phone. However, it means that the driver has to divert his attention to the conversation, which leads to less concentration on the road. On the contrary, one can therefore connect motorist’s accidents and cell phone usage while driving.
“It only takes a second to look at your phone to reply to someone that your life is flashed before your eyes.” At any time during the day over 660,000 drivers in the United States use cell phones. In 2000, barely any kids or teens had phones; but now 6 out of 10 U.S parents of children ages 6-12 years old have a cell phone over more than half of teens that can drive has a phone. Cell phones do 3 things to you “visual”- taking your eyes off the road, “manual”- taking hands off of the wheel, and “cognitive”- taking mind off of driving. Are cell phones dangerous while driving?
Was that one conversation with your friend worth the next one hundred y’all could’ve had? Was finding that certain emoji worth not being able to send it? Were your anger and lack of patience to get to your destination worth not getting there at all? Most people are distracted at least half the time when driving; whether it is a phone, trying to change the radio station, drinking, eating, reaching down into the seat, or simply having a conversation with the passenger. It’s not expected for someone to be absolutely silent when driving.
One of the worst train accidents in U.S history occurred when a conductor exchange a text messages on his phone while operating the train. This issue sparked huge controversy with lawmakers and many states have now enacted bans statewide on a handheld phone usage in the car. Additionally, many states have also enacted laws that make it illegal for bus drivers and drivers with a learner's’ permits to use handheld devices in the cars. The use of cellphones while driving is not only distraction, but it is known to potentially cause disasters like the one discussed above. Cell phone usage while operating a vehicle should be banned in this country because it will prevent more death that occur every day.
According to The National Safety Council, using a cell phone while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes every year (5). That is more than a fourth of all of the traffic wrecks every year. It is also said, that texting while driving makes you six-times more likely to be in an automobile accident than driving while intoxicated (6). More than 3,300 people are killed, and 421,000 injured in the United States by distracted driving in 2012, with the leading distraction being cell phone usage (7). It’s hard to imagine one of those people being a friend, a family member, or even yourself, but for supporters of bans against cell phone usage while driving, it isn’t.
In the 21st century, people have become busier and technology has gotten better. With more advanced technology leads more dependence on our cell phones and computers. This effect has taken a toll on our everyday lives as a society; people can no longer go a day or two without their cellphones and the dependence on computers and tablets for the workplace or even schools have skyrocketed within the last decade. This conclusion has led me to the fact that there should not be a law set to oppose the use of hand-held cellphones while driving. Drivers should be able to use hand-held cellphones, if used responsibly, because cellphones provide GPS, the ability to call someone, and apps that help drivers to their best potential.
“We only have 100 years left before Doomsday - and we need to get off the earth long before that comes to pass.” Renowned Physicist Stephen Hawking made this statement in May of 2017, and he is backed by Tesla and SpaceX founder and CEO, Elon Musk. With climate change, epidemics, overdue volcanic eruptions and asteroid strikes, and not to mention human overpopulation, we need to find a new planet. Elon Musk has already started plans to send cargo and crew to Mars in 2024, Musk states, “ You want to wake up in the morning and think of a future that is going to be great - and that’s what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past.
Drivers have also been affected by this since some are full-time drivers while others are just casual drivers who are either driving to work or performing some part time chores. Regardless of the motive for driving, one ought to realize that there are other motorists on the road and their actions may have a tragic influence on the life of the next motorists. It is not a new occurrence to see a driver using the mobile phone while at very high speeds (Lee 724). The world has been overtaken by this madness, and the use of cell phones in traffic is slowly becoming a common occurrence. Many countries, as well as states, have tried to curb this behavior by enacting legislation but to no
