The article that I choose to review is titled “Doritos Locos Tacos: The Best Marketed Product in Recent History?” Fast food chains such as McDonalds, Burger King and Taco Bell have of late been aggressively marketing their new products. Recent television advertisements from Taco Bell go so far as to make fun of McDonalds.

In 1943 Abraham Maslow defined the five human needs and ranked them in importance. Taco Bell continues to be effective marketing its products to address the physiological and esteem need of its consumers (Gunelius, 2014). The story can be defined as the emotional connection that is made with a product or a brand. Taco Bell has created a story line that makes the consumer believe that their party will be enhanced by a Taco Bell product, in this case the Doritos Locos Tacos (Campbell, 2013). This strategy is vital because the ability to appear to the emotions of the consumer is the most effective method to develop perceived needs in the mind of the consumer. They are engraining in our minds that their products will improve our social lives and makes us happier. After researching this topic, I have been looking for an opportunity to visit Taco Bell!
Handling of marketing issue Based on what I have learned Taco Bell is handling this marketing issue appropriately. They are taking advantage of the present economy and using it to their advantage. They are aggressively marketings and competing with other food chain giants such McDonalds. They have taken important features from the competitors - breakfast menu items and value priced items and are using it to their advantage. The only issue that I have with their aggressive marketing is they are targeting McDonalds by mimicking them in their commercials. I believe that Taco Bell does not need to make jest of McDonalds in order to compete with them. There are a large group of people that will be turned away by such antics, myself included.
Lastly, the author informs readers that compared to Mexican food, Taco Bell’s food is cheaply made. Upon visiting a local Taco Bell restaurant, Burciaga orders a menu item and begins to consume the taco when he notices that the “meat was lukewarm and the cheese and shredded lettuce were cold.
The article is talking about how Taco bell is inventing something that was supposedly existing. But taco bell had different ways of selling their quesalupas to people, their target market is usually the younger crowd looking for cheap good tasting food. So of course the people are going to go to taco bell, and try everything new that they come out with. Taco bell was striving to be different from other fast food places and brain wash teens into thinking their fast food, food, is better than all of the other fast food places. The article says that they are trying to copy REAL Mexican food, and taco bell is brainwashing people into thinking they are coming out with all of this “NEW” Mexican food. When companies try to advertise their product they try to convince you by making it look glamorous and persuade you into thinking that you need the product that they are selling. The commercial that I’ve chosen is called “McDonald’s Pay with Lovin”, it was shown during the 2015 Super Bowl Commercial. It was promoting to spread the love. But also the company was convincing the target audiences to purchase their products and repurchase it. America’s most famous fast food chain restaurant is trying to use the opportunity to get their customers to come and spread the word about Pay with Lovin, so that more people can come to the store. The reasoning behind this, according to New York’s time, fast food chain McDonald, is suffering a great deal amount of loss. Twenty one percent has dropped in the fourth-quarter earnings in 2014, their net income went by fifteen percent to 4.76 billion. So McDonald is losing to other chains like Shake Shack and Chipotle. McDonald is the world’s leading food service organization, who is suffering a great loss to other companies, and is trying to change things up.
The fast food restaurant industry, which includes quick-service and fast-casual restaurants, is highly segmented with the top 50 companies accounting for only 25% of the industry’s sales. The $120 billion industry includes over 200,000 restaurants with 50% of those specializing in hamburger entrees. (hoovers.com 2008) The major competitors in the industry include McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, and KFC – Chick-fil-A’s major competitor in chicken sales. Chick-fil-A’s unique position in the market, specializing in chicken-based entrées, has lead to a competitive advantage which the company has been able to capitalize on. Recently, many competitors have added chicken entrees in order to compete in the market segment. Through marketing strategies and company initiatives, Chick-fil-A has tried to stay distant from competitors, offering a fresh alternative to the ordinary fast food restaurant.

The first fast-food chain was opened in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas. They opened up selling burgers, fries and cola all for a mere price of 5 cents. Fast-food restaurants however did not become popular until after World War 2, when America officially becomes a fast-food nation. White Castle’s founder Walter Anderson’s business model was to have limited amount of choices in immense volume at a low cost. On top of this, the new hamburger restaurants were to serve their customers at lightning quick speed. All of which that creates the business models of fast food franchises, all over the world today. On the other hand the McDonald brothers introduced the method of making food at a low production cost. Making the food the customer eat low quality but still be giving costumers mouths tastes of heaven.
