What do you do after school? Is it your homework, a job, or playing sports? Whatever it is that you do requires time and attention. Kids who work after school would have less time for homework, school clubs or functions, and no time to play sports. High school is all about the experience you get from doing homework all night, cheering for your team at a game or being the one playing, and sharing your interests with peers in a club. If students had a job after school they wouldn't be able to participate in the high school experience. They would be missing out and regret it in the future. The future holds many things, like college. We all know that to get into college you need good grades. Last years acceptance rates into universities were at an astounding low, with over 70% of applicants having atleast a 3.8 or higher GPA. To maintain a high GPA you have to devote alot of time into your schoolwork. Having a job after school hinders a students ability to fit studying into their schedule. School gets out at 2 p.m., a job would be from 2:30 to around 7:30. That's seven hours that you used to work instead of doing schoolwork so that you can get into college and then get a real job in the future. Devoting time to school not only benefits you now but also in the future when applying to college. Boosting school spirit and moral is an essential attribute to schools all around the country. Without school spirit students are not motiviated to do well in school or to support their school. Having time to attend after school games allows students to interact with their peers and cheer in their schools team. Interaction with peers is imperitive to a kids growth and development. Dr. Mark Green conducted a study that showed 64% of students who go to after school activities are happier and more prone to stay in school and attend everyday. After school clubs are also a way to connect with peers. Being involved in clubs allows you to share ideas with people your age about a topic. I am in a multitude of clubs, such as: Ecology Club, Future Business Leaders of America, and Student Government Association. Without being involved in a variety clubs I wouldn't be enjoying high school as much. having a job would interfer with kids being able to be in clubs or go to sports games because the wouldn't have time.
Playing a school sport enables you to bond with your teammates, making lifelong friends. Sports are fun and thrilling; they help kids get into shape. For years now there have been kids who play sports who also are very good in academics. Sports help kids get organized and teach them to balance their school work with sports. The article to start all the buzz about no sports in high school is written by
I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)
This could get you financially and mentally stable, quicker in your life. This could help you pay off bills faster so you will not be in debt when you get out of college. Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
When is comes to money, saving for long terms goals is harder than acceptings loans when you need the money. However, is sure beats having to pay back loans years down the road. If one were to work throughout high school and save $6 per hour, he could have a savings of up to $24,960 by the time he finishes high school (Steinberg 1). This is an acceptable solution because it does not affect the student’s academic performance adversely. In fact, “students who were employed actually had a slightly higher average GPA (2.72) than those who weren’t working (2.69) (Steinberg 1).
Many young students have now started to work at a part time job or full time job while being in high school or college. Most of these students that are working are either working at a fast food restaurant or a low pay job to get students to work. Working while going to school might be a step of growing up and paying bills, but working actually impacts student’s education Fast food industries just want student’s to work but working in this low skill job there is not really a big benefit that you can get out of it. In the essay by Amitai Etzioni: "Working at McDonald's", states a variety of strong points on why students should not work and continue to get an education instead of dropping out and working at a fast food restaurant forever. As
...then they can stay after school in order to avoid the insecure situation at home and take their focus off the situation by being involved in activities that they truly love to do. Because students in extracurricular activities have this increased social well-being and protection from risky environments, they are much less likely suffer from depression, and they would have increased mental health overall. In these ways, having mandated extracurricular activities benefit the students’ social and mental health.
In this article they explain how working can be healthy for teenagers, especially those who know how to balance out their time. If teenagers take the responsibility to time out their schedule and make sure they aren't underworking it can be really beneficial. “Teens who enter adolescence with strong academic interests and goals may work very little during high school, and when they do have jobs, they limit their hours of employment so as to not jeopardize their grades.” These teenagers who work like this also find that the jobs help with the basic skills, for instance “ a wide range of beneficial attributes, such as the capacity to take responsibility, develop time-management skills, overcome shyness with adults, and handle
Overall, this article is most useful as inspiration for students to participate in extracurricular and community activities. It can be used to support why school organizations are beneficial; however the informal tone may weaken the article's effectiveness. This article can also support students' character development outside the classroom due
It is very common that many high school students hold part time jobs while going to school. When these teens work, they are able to learn and experience life lessons from ethical and moral work. Knowing that school is aways and should be a priority, students should work while in high school because working helps students be more responsible with their lives, help them practice time managment, and also helps students see and experience the real world.
The advantages of clubs for the school include “opportunities for students to be recognized for achievement, involvement of community members in programs, and positive public relations with the community” (Brountas). Parents could also benefit by observing their children excelling more in school and coming home with excitement about the club. After school clubs also have different categories.
According to author Mike Fritz, “employment helps students stay on the path toward graduation.” Most students find themselves picking up managing time well if they have a time sensitive job. Meaning, certain tasks need to be completed at a certain time, or in a certain amount of time. Time management also seems to be the center point of doing well in school. Without it, homework tends to not be completed, which turns into bad test grades and then unfortunately bad semester grades, which is not something a student wants if they want to graduate.
You always want to put your most important goals to be at the top of your schedule. I got a job before my junior year and it has impacted my schooling in many ways. I would work about four to five days a week and when one of those day are a school day I started to ignore my school work and focus more on being my greatest in the work environment. This did not work out for me, I started to fall behind in classes. When you take on a job, that job is to be made to work around your school schedule. There were many days I needed to stay after school for a test retake or just for some help. I thought that because I had a job now I couldn’t put my school first. I made this mistake many time. I took a Chemistry unit test and did not do so good on the test, the teacher had retakes the next following days after school. Of course I had to work all those days. I did not call off and stay after to retake the test. My choice to not take charge of my education, that poor grade stayed in the gradebook and further affected the overall
Two-thirds of children who participate in extracurricular activities are expected to attain at least a bachelor’s degree, whereas only half of children that do not participate do (National Center for Education Statistics, 1995). Childhood is a very important time in our lives, a time when we develop many vital skills that follow us into adulthood. Some people laugh or scoff at us parents that keep our children to busy schedules. Those same people would also argue that our children should be allowed to have a childhood, to not be so tightly scheduled in their daily lives. Before jumping on that bandwagon, I would suggest doing a little research. Participating in after-school activities has shown to benefit children in many ways. Children should
Extracurricular activities can benefit students greatly through their personal lives and well being. According to Justin Coulson in his article on kidspot.com, students that are involved in extracurricular activities, such as sports or clubs, are generally healthier than those who do not participate. Extracurricular activities can help raise student’s self esteem and self awareness as stated by Joy Burgess in her article, “Extracurricular School Activities and the Benefits” at more4kids.info. Being involved allows the student to learn about the skills and talents they already have and can teach them new ones such as time management, organization, and prioritizing skills. It also allows the students to realize what they are good at or enjoy doing (Burgess). As similarly described by the College Board staff at collegeboard.org, extracurriculars can enable you to learn your personal talents, interests, ...
