In daily American lives, the presence of social media is a great one. We get updates on our phones through Facebook, Twitter, and various other applications, in which we receive news updates about conflict abroad, economic trends or a cabinet position in President Trump’s administration. Whether we comment, tweet, repost, or hashtag, anyone with access to a mobile device can publicly have an opinion about our governmental system. The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, has had his own opinions about his cabinet and he has often critiqued how the media portrays him. He refers to this as his “war” with the media. Likes Charles Blow argued, Trump is not having a “running war with the media” rather he is “in fact having a running …show more content…
During the election campaign, a scandalous video of Trump making vulgar comments about women surfaced, and many women stepped forward to accuse Mr. Trump of sexual assault, and Trump went on to make sexist remarks against his opponent, Mrs. Clinton. During this time, his popularity amongst women took a sharp decline. Reports following his election put Trump’s approval ratings at 44% before he even took office. When he won on Election Day, and assumed office on January 20th, the weekend following his inauguration a major women’s rights protest took place on all seven continents. (Liptak) The public’s disapproval ratings only kept declining with each executive order signed, to get us to the 40% approval rating we are at today. (Gallop) President Trump, accordingly, responded with a tweet, saying “Immigration Ban Is One Of Trump’s Most Popular Orders So Far,” citing a poll conducted by Morning Consult and Politico, the ban is favored by 55% of all voters. (Trump) The poll does not specify if “all voters” means “all” of Trump’s voters or “all” voters of the general election in November. An article by Mike Ludwig, published for Truthout, criticizes the Trump administration for not being truthful toward the American people and spreading ‘alternative facts’. “If you don’t accept our legitimacy, no matter how skewed the “alternative facts” may be, then we won’t accept yours.” …show more content…
But this is not a utopia and President Trump has angered the majority of Americans, and as citizens and residents of this great nation, we have a to be political beings and voice our concern. We do this through the media. The opinion of the people is voiced through the media and is currently being completely ignored. President Trump is going down a path of complete and utter destruction, and in order for it to be resolved, he is going to need to start listening to the media, who is not the enemy, rather his ticket to another
Media finds its central role in the democratic debate in providing information, analysis, and a diversity of perspectives to the public. In recent years, with what is known as a media revolution, the amount of telecommunication outlets has increased dramatically. Often called “a product of healthy market competition,” the media revolution has theoretically expanded the public’s access to a multitude of facts, opinions, and general information (Miroff, et al. 2015). However, with a
Since the presidential goal is to lead the public opinion, the media’s aid is needed in order to reach out for the people and persuade them with any desired adjustme...
Is Donald J. Trump the cause, or the effect? Many politicians agree with Shelby Steele’s point of view which states, “Donald Trump is not the cause, he is the effect.” I believe Trumps election was the effect, of an endless list of political and economic disasters; hence making the political and economic disasters the cause.
“1. Wake up and don’t believe the press. The president’s political opponents and the press are lying to the public, Kelly said, citing the crackdown on immigrants, which included the recent deportation of mother of four who was her family’s sole breadwinner and 23-year-old Californian who came to the U.S. when he was nine.
In the midst of one of the most controversial presidential elections in history, both political parties are struggling to prove that their candidate is the best choice. Clinton and Trump’s disapproval ratings are very low, but one has to ask, is there really a lesser evil to choose from? While Clinton has had her own fair share of past discrepancies, Trump’s track record proves much more troublesome. Donald Trump has proven to be an untrustworthy presidential candidate because of his misogynistic actions, his racial bias, and his corrupt business history. During the Republican debate on August 6, 2016, Trump had a falling out with Fox correspondent Megyn Kelly after she questioned him about some of his comments on women, where he referred to them as “’fat pigs’, ‘dogs’, ’slobs’, and ‘disgusting animals’,” (Bahadur).
Looking the historical moment we are living at, it is undeniable that the media plays a crucial role on who we are both as individuals and as a society, and how we look at the...
For the first time, Trump’s ratings fell; and that precipitously; he dropped nearly 10 percentage points. People within his party, who had previously endorsed him, were rescinding those endorsements because of his racist comments. Trump was in trouble, but providence would again prevail.
Three weeks ago, Trump’s title elevated from GOP candidate to president-elect. Following this revelation, protests erupted and injured countless civilians and law enforcers. Even high schoolers, trapped in the wrong place at the wrong time, have been tear gassed and endangered through the protests. Yet, these protests determine nothing: on January 20th, Donald Trump will still become president. While hatred continues to simmer below the surface, protesters slowly realize that their street performances cannot ensure a better future, only a violent present. As they become discredited about the state of their country, the democrat’s anger morphs into anxiety. With a president-elect, who, in the past three weeks, has altered his platform and changed
Well the supporters of Trumpism were sold on certain policies. These policies would guarantee a social change and a change in politics. One leading policy that help gain Trumpism was child care. Child care is the single largest expense in households. Mr. President proposal will allow parents who earned less than $250,000 individually or a jointly earning of $500,000 will be deducted the average cost of a child and or elderly. This deduction will come out of their income tax. How would one not be sold on something so promising that would help me out. Also, parents who stay at home with their children will benefit from the child care tax deduction. They felt as though a changed needed to be Trump’s supporters put so much faith into Trump by another policy including paid sick leave. The working class took advantage of this policy due to Donald Trump allowing the workers to care for themselves and for their ill family members. Trumpism was built on these promises of major social issues that Trumps followers wanted to see a change
I believe that we need a change in America and I personally think that Donald Trump is going to be the president to bring us the change that is needed to make America great again. His views on gun control, which is that it is unnecessary, and his ideals to bring jobs back to America from china are all good thing that Americans needs. He has a lot of great ideas, and some not so great, in my opinion, that he has to offer if he becomes the President of the United States in the next election. Hillary Clinton is not necessary a bad choice for America, I just believe that she wants to lead us down the same path that we have been on for the last 8 years. We need a huge change and Donald Trump can give us that.
Warren turned the situation right back around when she announced how atrocious not only that behavior was but his behavior is consistently towards women. As the audience recalls the comment in the presidential debate, she follows it up by referencing the other moments where he took advantage of women to paint the mental set of trump as both a physical and verbal abuser of women. This may not be the complete story but the power of the misinformation effect enhances all past memories relating to his abuse as even more drastic than they already seemed. After this election is over I can imagine that Trump is going to have a very hard time associating with anyone who self-identifies as a woman because all their available memories of Trump associating with women are vividly abusive. As the availability heuristic explains, their first thought will be most likely one that’s related to him groping them or him calling them some name that they would rather not be called. Imagine what most Americans must think of trump when they’re in the voting booths. Most likely their thought won’t revolve around the issues that he neglects to speak on but instead their thoughts will revolve around what type of person he is or how much they would rather not have their children observationally learn from the man. As an authority figure, anything he does in front of an impressionable mind seems like
That statement alone gained thousands of Hispanic voters. another good comment that Hillary Clinton has made is If a country doesn't recognize minority rights and human rights, including women's rights, you will not have the kind of stability and prosperity that is possible”. Hillary has proposed equal rights several times before and with this statement she reinforces her position with equal rights. Both Trump and Hillary have different views on economy.
Rather than being a neutral conduit for the communication of information, the U.S. media plays an intricate role in shaping and controlling political opinions. Media is extremely powerful in the sense that without an adequate functioning media, it is virtually impossible for a sophisticated social structure like the U.S. Government to exist. Henceforth, all known sophisticated social structure, have always dependent upon the media’s ability to socialize. The U.S. government generally will exploit the media, often times manipulating the enormous power of the printed word. Ultimately empowering the U.S. government, strengthening it with the ability to determine and control the popular perception of reality. One way in which government achieves this objective, is by its ability to misuse the media’s ability to set the agenda. Contrary to popular belief, media is in fact an enormous hegemony. In fact, separate independent news organizations relatively do not exist. Rather than creating an independent structured agenda of there own, generally lesser smaller news organizations adapt to a prepared agenda, previously constructed by a higher medium. Based upon this information alone, it is quite apparent that media functions in adherence to the characteristics of a hierarchy. This simply means that media is structured in a way that it operates functioning from top to bottom. This is also identical to the hierarchical nature of the human body, in that from the commands of the brain transferred through the central nervous system, the body responds accordingly. In order for the U.S. government to control and determine the public’s popular perception of reality, the government must shape and oversee the information that the media reports to the existing populous. This particular process of democracy is known and referred to by political scientists as cognitive socialization. However, many of us, who do not adhere to the cushioning of political correctness, refer to it as the propaganda machine. Numerous political scientists consider cognitive socialization to be the most effective form of political socialization. According to theory, cognitive socialization is doctored up information, which is strategically fragmented in such a manipulative manner, that the probability of its rationalization is highly predictable. The manipulative properties of cognitive socialization are so diabolical and Machiavellian in nature, that I consider it to be the ultimate perversion of the democratic process. In all seriousness, numerous intellectuals, and gentleman held in good stature agree, that cognitive socialization is the product of an evil genius.
As media has grown it has allowed for easier use for the average individual. This paper will examine how Donald Trump has used the media available today and how effective he has been. To begin, Trump’s background must be looked at to gain an understanding of how he came to the place he is today. According to the Washington Post, he was born in Queens New York into a wealthy family and when he was a teenager he was sent off to military school by his father (Miller & Schwartzman). He grew up with a cushy lifestyle before his father decided that his behavior required somewhat of a “reality check” for the teen. Trump later went into the family business of being a real estate developer in 1971. Eventually he even starred in his own relity television
Now, just because the entire world can be involved in the media, does not necessarily make it any stronger. The contemporary era of participatory media does destroy the sense that any person, educated or not, can create input on certain issues. Along with information that could not be credible, social media has become very emotionally heavy in that people are openly discussing the high’s and lows’ of their lives online (Jalonen, 2014, p. 128). Social media is so easily accessible people are also known to be taking advantage of
