Core Piece - Dolphin Shoals performed by Katzuki Katsuta https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUmzNty43Fo (0:00 - 1:26). With reference to the concepts of music, describe how musical interest is created in this excerpt. Interest refers to how the concepts of music are made to stand out and attract the attention of the listener. Dolphin Shoals creates interest through the sax solo, which uses pitch, duration and expressive techniques to stand out. Pitch is used to create interest through the chord progressions in the harmony and the chromaticism in the saxophone lines. In the beginning of the first section, the piano plays a I7, ii7, iii7, V7sus4 chord progression which builds momentum and interest due to the ascending progression. The perfect …show more content…
The Monsters Inc. Theme is written for soprano saxophone, trombone, piano, bass guitar and drums. The piece belongs to the jazz genre and is characterised by complex harmonies and solos as well as a presto tempo and a swing performance style. The piece follows the jazz song structure with an introduction, a head, solos and the repetition of the head. In the introduction, the sax plays the melody consisting of swung quaver notes and triplets. The phrase begins with a 1 beat anacrusis, often used in jazz to give rhythmic momentum to the swung melodic lines. The melody consists of 3 phrases where the second phrase is a repetition of the first phrase at a minor third lower. The melody consists of a triplet followed by 5 quavers where the triplet ascends chromatically. This chromatic technique is used in jazz to add unique colour to the piece whilst also allowing for creative embellishments. The piano plays the harmony using extended chords, with the first chord being an Ebdim7 and the second chord a Cdim7. The chords are syncopated, enhancing the swing style of jazz. The use of these diminished chords creates tension which is immediately resolved by the melodic phrases which end on the root
1. Music is a strictly local expression, rich in variety since each culture expresses affective differences through art, 2. Music is a poetic process--complex, vague, and irrational--based upon borrowed traditional musical materials (melodies, rhythms, forms, etc.), 3. Music is for a religious, elitist-class performer who can understand and appreciate its mysterious nature and power, 4. Music is played softly in intimate gatherings, 5. Music making is the activity of Everyman, exacting the talents of variously trained amateurs who, with industry and practice, decorate their recreation and leisure in moments of social intercourse.
The piece opens with a series of quick, fiery chords spanning almost the entire range of the piano, followed a by light staccato section in a scherzo style. The mood then changes with a long lyrical section, before fragments of the vigorous rhythmic opening section return and bring the music to a darker section that also echoes the theme of Rhapsody No. 2. The second half of the piece re-uses the melody of the lyrical section, only transposed up by a fourth, which provides a bigger contrast to the previous dark section.
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.

Attention-Getter: There’s a theory by Steven Mithen that states music is the evolutionary precursor [a person or thing that comes before another of the same kind; a forerunner] to language (meaning we turn to music before spoken word to communicate what were trying to say), the bridge between the cries and gestures of other primates and our own more abstract communication, and it is an important aspect in our success as a species. Music is not just a form of entertainment, or communication, it is also a crucial tool for social bonding, a key element of human survival (“Hein, E.”)
The music accompaniment to this piece comes from one or two pianos which work in almost perfect collaboration with the dance so that neither one overshadows the other. While no other instruments are used, the melody of the piano changes from scene to scene in order to depict Jooss’ emotional responses. During the scenes with the politicians, the air of the piano is light-hearted and almost comedic. The purpose of this was to show the detachment of these men from the war. They are in a safe situation, unexposed to war and death. When the scene changes and we see what’s happening in the lives of citizens, this vaudeville-like tune is transformed into a thunderous and eerie song that haunts the audience. The reason for this change is to reveal Jooss’ feelings about the unnecessary brutality and death that always comes with a war, and how politicians don’t understand the horror of it.
The final movement concentrates more on the pitch transformation. Structurally, this format would be a recapitulation, but the use of pitch transforms it into something new. To emphasize the pitch fluctuation, three different kinds of flutes were played. Because of the pitch variation in this piece, there were many melodies to follow. In a way, the music sounded like sound effects to a horror flick.
The brass plays an ascending sequence, followed by pizzicato notes played by the strings, and an ascending and descending scale on the harp. Strings and oboe play the rhythmic melody, whilst the trumpet plays fanfares in syncopation. The oboe is then replaced by the flute. There is an ascending scale played by the strings, then the brass section repeats the string and oboe melody with cymbal crashes at cadence points. The orchestra then plays a loud melody with cymbal crashes and drum rolls. There is an interrupted cadence, followed by crescendo with cymbal crashes and a brass ostinato. The piece ends with a perfect cadence.
There is a growing body of work in the philosophy of music and musical aesthetics that has considered the various ways that music can be meaningful: music as representational (that is, musical depictions of persons, places, processes, or events); musical as quasi-linguistic reference (as when a musical figure underscores the presence of a character in a film or opera), and most especially, music as emotionally expressive. Here I will focus on the last topic, for I believe it will be useful for researchers in music perception and cognition to avail themselves of the distinctions that aestheticians have worked out regarding the musical expression of emotion.
From 3:20 to the end is the third section, and it returns to the first idea. In this music piece, the composer achieves the unity of the timbre; because he not only uses the brass instrument at the first and third section but also uses the piano at second section. The composer also achieves the unity of the pitch, because

It was the second strongest earthquake in Costa Rica's history since the 1991 limon earthquake. So what was the cause of it? Costa Rica is known to lie directly above the subduction zone this is where the majority of the largest earthquakes occur, due to the subduction zones having a large area of lithospheric plates sliding against each other, and negative buoyancy force driving the plate consuming process ceaselessly.

Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
