Crystal, great post. You made some excellent points. Do you think Pilate realized who Jesus really was? "Pilate's mind was in turmoil because he was convinced of Jesus' innocence" (Knight, 2001, pg. 233). Pilate knew in his heart that Jesus innocent and he did want the blood of Jesus on his hands. I think the controversy comes because people were trying to convict Jesus of a crime he did not commit. They were not convince Jesus was not was the Messiah, but they also could not prove he wasn't the Messiah. “Pilate does not see how this question could be of interest to him since he is not a Jew (v. 35). He has not gone looking for Jesus, but rather Jesus has been handed over to him by his own nation and the high priests” (https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/commentaries/IVP-NT/John/Pilate-Interrogates-Jesus).
I think Pilate wanted to give Jesus a fair trial and to prove his innocence.
One of the first things said about Pilate after she is born is a comment by the midwife, who said on the topic of her name “Christ-killing Pilate. You can’t get much worse than that for a name.”(19). The association of Pilate Dead with Pontius
The life of Jesus is one that is often discussed and debated among scholars and authors since the time Jesus walked this earth. Gerd Theissen’ s work, Shadow of the Galilean, takes the unique perspective of a grain merchant who has been enlisted by Pilate to find out information on various religious sects and report back to him. After Andreas, the grain merchant’s, first report he is given the task of finding out more about this Jesus who is gaining quite a following. Pilate and the Romans want to know if he is a threat to them. This book follows Andreas as he goes on a journey to find out more about Jesus from various sources for his report to the Romans.
...ude the controversial issues about Jesus. Andreas seemed to have been on the border line with following Jesus and believing he was some guy that was telling lies around the cities. It’s not until Jesus is up for execution when he becomes a follower of Christ. Once Andreas returns, he learns that Barabbas and two zealots were arrested. Barabbas is Andreas’ friend, so he decides to propose ways of rebellion to the Romans. Pilate decides to have a meeting with Andreas about his proposal leads. Pilate manipulates Andreas’s proposal by giving the people of Jerusalem the decision which criminal to keep from execution: Barabbas or Jesus. In the end the people chose Barabbas which meant Jesus, including two other criminals, was sent to be crucified. The story concludes with Andreas recognizing Jesus’ power after so many of the people in his life have been changed by Jesus.
In this first chapter of Jesus and the Disinherited , the author Howard Thurman describes
This paper is written to discuss the many different ideas that have been discussed over the first half of Theology 104. This class went over many topics which gave me a much better understanding of Christianity, Jesus, and the Bible. I will be addressing two topics of which I feel are very important to Christianity. First, I will be focusing on the question did Jesus claim to be God? This is one of the biggest challenges of the Bibles that come up quite often. Secondly, I will focus on character development.
Over 2000 years ago, there purportedly was a man born of a virgin, who made outrageous claims. This man was Jesus of Nazareth and He professed to be the Son of God. Without question, Jesus is one of the most influential people that ever walked the earth, but was he the Son of God? Many suggest that he was not Lord, just a great moral teacher, which is a legitimate answer if one does not consider the bold statements that he proclaimed to the world. Lewis suggests that if Jesus was not God, but claimed to be God, then these opponents have lost their argument because he was clearly not a moral teacher but an outright liar or a crazy lunatic. On the other hand, scholars argue Jesus never professed to be God and followers of Christ distort the
Nearly two thousand years ago, according to the biblical record, Jesus walked the land of Palestine ministering to the people with signs and wonders before meeting his end by crucifixion. Some historians and scholars say that Jesus was a dangerous insurrectionist that got himself executed by the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate. Others revere Jesus as one of the many prophets that were sent by God to the Jewish nation. Many more believe that he was the son-of-god who came to earth on a mission to pay the penalty for the sins of the human race and bring
Firstly, at the start of the gospel, Jesus was not accepted by His own people, as Shylock was not accepted by his fellow Venetians. Jesus was not accepted because the Jews did not believe in what He is said to have done, though they were created from His Father. Shylock is rejected because they do not believe in his religion, which actually is the their own too, for both Christianity and Judaism came from Jerusalem. Their own people rejected both of them. This is further shown in the fact that the Jews persecuted Jesus (who in actual fact was one of their people) because he `broke a law' to rid somebody of sin, as seen in "So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him." (John 5:16). Ironically, Shylock's fellow human beings similarly persecuted him, because he did not conform to their societal norm by being a Christian.
Jesus was no longer riding into Jerusalem being worshiped in His kingship but now the religious leaders plotted and schemed to have Jesus crucified. Jesus is presented before Pontius Pilate where He is asked if He is the King of the Jews and He answered “Thou sayest.” The soldiers mocked Jesus by placing a scarlet robe on Him with a crown of thorns and a reed in His right hand saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They clothed Him and led him away to be crucified. Matthew 27:37 says, “And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” The moment Jesus breathed His last the veil of the temple was torn in two, the earth quaked, graves were opened and the saints arose. “Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those thing that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” Matthew
In Matthew, it starts out with Pilat questioning Jesus. Jesus does not answer Pilat. It makes it seem as if no one is fighting for Jesus. In John, it makes it seem as if Pilat does not want to kill Jesus. He fights for ever chance not to have Jesus crucified. The book of John goes into more depth on the questing of Jesus. In the questioning of Jesus, in the book of John, Jesus does speak up(vs.11). The following verse then goes...
In the bible the wooden cross represents the burden of the sins that Christ carried with him to his death. Santiago was killed in order to clear the sin of Angela Vicario. The wooden door could symbolise Santiago dying for the sins of the community much like Jesus Christ who died for the sins of man. Santiago finally died in the kitchen of his house; this could be a link to eating the body of Christ. In what other ways was Santiago’s death a stigma of Jesus Christ?
From the very beginning of the film there is conflict, externally in the Palestine of the Roman era, and internally in Jesus. This dual struggle is shown in the beginning of the film when we see Jesus as a carpenter making crosses for the crucifixion of fellow Jews. Jesus himself says he is driven by fear, fear of the Romans and fear of what he feels God is doing inside of him. This internal conflict begins to explain the distance between him and those around him, with this weighing on him he decides to seek consolation and answers away from where he lives and in the
In the narrative in which Pilate is named, Pilate's father, who can't read, lets the Bible fall open and points to a set of lines that look agreeable to him. It just so happens that the word spelled out by those lines is "Pilate," the name of the Roman who turns Jesus over to be crucified. The midwife attending at Pilate's birth asks the father if he really wants to name the child after the person who killed Jesus, and the father replies, "I asked Jesus to save me my wife," and he continues, "I asked him all night long" (19). Yet his wife wasn't saved, and Pilate's father feels...
So in doing this, Jesus obviously made a lot of people mad. Most obviously were the chief priests in the temple because he did it during Passover (one of the holiest holidays), knowing Pontius Pilate was around for crowd control, and to announce so liberally that the freedom of their people was at hand, would incite a threat to the Roman stronghold. It is known that Pontius Pilate was not a nice guy to begin with, and he was not happy to be in Jerusalem during its most crowded time of the year. Passover is a holiday celebrating the Jews freedom from slavery, so he was there as crowd control. Paula Fredrickson states in an interview: 'He had a reputation for crucifying untried prisoners…Pilate was legally responsible to be in Jerusalem when it was most crowded. He was in a bad mood already when he got into town…hearing that someone was a trouble maker would be enough.'; So all he needed to do was find someone to take his frustrations out on. Enter Jesus. The priests basically handed him over to Pilate. In the gospel of Luke, the priests call Jesus a blasphemer. Was he turned over to Pilate because of their desire to keep the peace, or was it out of jealousy that maybe Jesus knew something they didn't, or was it merely out of ignorance? There is no evidence that he committed some blasphemy, so he was handed over to Pilate for what? He was a threat to the priests' stronghold over the temple, if Jesus was right, then there would be no need for them.
As well, during my research I found out the bible says “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's,"(Matthew 22:21). After reading the whole story in the bible you see that people where trying to trick Jesus. This was their way of seeing if he was against the government just so they could have an excuse to arrest him. But he was wise, he knew they would try and trick him, but he always gave them the answer they were not ex...
