In general, the basic concept of diversity means that everyone is unique and have individual differences that must be accepted and respected in our society. For the most part, these uniqueness falls along the lines of dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual-orientation, socio-economic status, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, and others (Excelsior College, n.d.)
In general, in my opinion, the term diversity can be defined in many ways by different people and mean something different to the person explaining it and interpreting it. I grew up in North Carolina and I had encountered discrimination at an early age because I witness the advantages and disadvantages of the color of a person’s skin. In general, the majority of the different ethnicities from where I grew up lived in their own neighborhood and it was frowned upon from someone from another race to be in that particular neighborhood. I was taught early on that society has different rules because the color of your skin and hidden messages that states you’re supposed lived here. The hidden message in our society was from the “Old South”, where the Jim Crow Laws enacted in the 1870s which defined as” The law brought legal racial segregation against black Americans in the American South and these laws were ended in 1964 by the Civil Rights Act of 1964” were still relevant in today’s society (“Negro in American Democracy”, p. 2). As I grew older, I learned through my personal experiences and previous courses that the most important barrier amongst races is intercultural communication. The way we were raised develops our self-identity in which we are influenced by our neighborhoods and family values that were relayed to us at an early age. We’re taught at an early age, that the world has a ton of opportunities available for everyone who is willing to go the extra mile by working hard in their education and work ethics. However, many disagree with this concept, but in my upbringing I was told the color of a person’s skin will determine his or her advantages and disadvantages. In the African Americans cultures, there are some hidden prejudice amongst ourselves because we are taught that dark skin people are viewed as threatening to European Americans and this may affect their chances of success. Every individual in society and in a community is unique in their own ways, and their diversity shows up in many ways. Some of these ways include: religion, race, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, and so on. Everyone’s backgrounds are different, and this is what creates diversity in people. Even though everyone might not be the same, only by uniting everyone can we create the big picture. It’s like a puzzle—even though people are different, we can come together to create a big picture that couldn’t be created by puzzle pieces of the same shape. The real definition of diversity includes different elements of the identity and culture of each person. Diversity involves cultural differences, such as origins, religious or political affiliation, race, and gender, and other more profound differences, such as experiences and personality. As Banks argues in her research, the real definition involves several elements of our identity (149). Therefore, the way in which we define and conceptualize diversity affects the way in which we interact with people of others culture, race, and affiliations.
On September twenty-second in the year 1862, President Abraham Lincoln executively ordered the Emancipation Proclamation during the American Civil War. This command declared the freedom of all slaves in the ten Confederate States of America. Slavery was completely abolished in all states with the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment on December sixth in the year 1865. Since then African Americans have been free to live their lives without being owned, claimed, bought, or sold. Although this was a start, it definitely was not enough for African Americans to be considered equal. With all of the progression African Americans and other minorities have made, there are still obstacles the modern day ethnic-American faces. Some of these obstacles lay within a shared interest amongst Americans, sports. It has been hypothesized in the journal article “Race and Pathways to Power in the National Football League” by author Jomills Henry Braddock II, that a retired African American athlete would face struggles when trying to move into the coaching field or front office positions (Braddock 2012, 712). In the journal article, “Weighing in on the Coaching Decision: Discussing Sports and Race Online,” author Jimmy Sanderson explains to readers that the realm of the sports world has been heavily linked to white ideology (Sanderson 2010, 302). One cannot fully live the American Dream without sustaining successful and promising career goals. One’s should not have the feeling that others are “better than them” and that you can 't ever be equal to them just because they are a certain skin color. African-Americans had that sad feeling every day until around 1954 and even after that the blacks still had a rough time “fitting in” with the whites. I heard about this meeting through the resident advisor class. It was the only diversity related meeting that I could fit into my hectic schedule. Apparently it did not fit well into other students’ schedules because there were only three students beside myself in attendance. The audience, if you could call it that, was never acknowledged until the audience question and answer session at the end. The discussion was mostly composed of the panel members introducing themselves followed by half an hour of opinions that generally did not have to do with diversity or inclusion.
