Globalization of companies greatly aids in making companies more competitive as well as increasing their profit share. Globalization will usually bring employees or team members together from different financial backgrounds, religions, cultures and in some cases different sexual orientation. Companies must have the knowledge of diversity and if required, diversity programs in place to ensure equal treatment of all persons. When companies apply equal treatment of persons with diverse background, companies can become more profitable. If all persons within the company do not adhere to either the diversity requirements or the laws against discrimination, companies become vulnerable to discrimination lawsuits and poor public image.
One company currently experiencing challenges with diversity is Abercrombie & Fitch. Abercrombie & Fitch, a clothing retailer, markets their brand to the teen and young adult market. Publicly traded under the ticker symbol of ANF, Abercrombie & Fitch made $4.5 billion in gross profits during 2012. Abercrombie & Fitch recorded a gross profit of $4.15 billion in 2011. The décor of the stores, the aroma that fills the air inside of the stores and the sales staff appear strategically placed to entice both teen and young adult buyers to come inside and buy their items. Their most popular items include their branded denims and t-shirts with their “A&F” logo. Monitoring the halls of any middle school, high school or some college campuses will demonstrate the appeal of Abercrombie & Fitch’s brand to their target market.

Abercrombie and Fitch is an American retailer who has been facing many outstanding issues and is at risk of disappearing. For the past two decades, the company has been facing severe controversy. Abercrombie and Fitch has been long criticized for lack diversity and inclusion. The company excludes minorities and plus-sized customers from its stores. This controversy has brought many financial problems to Abercrombie and Fitch.

In a second attempt to further expand the company horizons, an e-commerce site was created. This site is interesting because its main focus is not the clothing but the “lifestyle”. Upon entering the Abercrombie and Fitch website, the first thing the consumer sees is a half naked man, sprawled on the ground, eating a plate full of fruit. It is just to be inferred that he is wearing Abercrombie and Fitch clothing. This just shows how the image of Abercrombie is much more important than the clothing itself. The site itself is bright and summery. The attitude is carefree, active and sexy. Maneuvering ones way around this website is relatively easy. The links include Lifestyle, A&F TV, A&F Quarterly (the magazine/catalogue), Company, and Shop A&F. Other links include, music, movies, downloads, postcards, photos, and “hot” sites. The website seems to be almost completely focused on drawing the consumer into the lifestyle of Abercrombie and Fitch. The information the company gives is very limited. For example, throughout the entire website, there is not one mention of a company mission statement, yet there is a plethora of information about the company’s financial standings.
Since the 1970’s Urban Outfitters INC. has produced a wide selection of clothing brands for the younger generation. Urban Outfitters INC. includes Free People, BHLDN, Anthropologie, Terrain and Urban Outfitters. The beginning of Urban Outfitters INC. started out in Philadelphia for college students, their fun loving affordable clothing appealed to students who were living under a college budget. It’s known for its “hipster” and “free thinking” clothing that would appeal to the younger generation. However in present day it seems as if the original purpose of Urban Outfitters INC. has been lost. The prices of clothing at Urban Outfitters and at their sister stores has increased drastically to where college students can barely afford it. Throughout the recent years Urban Outfitters INC. has found itself in multiple issues that effects the sales of their stores. For instance being reprimanded for their designs, being sued for stolen designs and having a president who supports anti-gay polictians. Considering all the negative aspects to Urban Outfitters and the loss of their traditional purpose Americans should not support Urban Outfitters Inc.
A newspaper article entitled” Retailers ask: Where Did the teenagers go?” focused on one of the issues. Elizabeth Harris from the New York Times interviewed teenagers who used to shop at A&F and asked them what they think about when it comes to shopping at Abercrombie. One teenager replied” when I think of who is shopping at Abercrombie, I think it’s more of people’s parents shopping for them” (Harris). This raised red flags for me because when I was about 14 or 15, if you didn’t wear a Abercrombie shirt or a pair of pants from the company, you weren’t considered “cool”. It’s like everyone in high school had an Abercrombie, Hollister, or Gilly Hicks shirt on; so to hear a teenager say this shows that once luring traditional teenager store is obviously experiencing some tough

The impact of diversity in the workplace is contingent upon several factors. Across companies diversified workforces are becoming increasingly common. To successfully manage a diverse workforce, organizations are ensuring that employees understand how their values and stereotypes influence their behavior toward others of different gender, ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds; are gaining an appreciation of cultural differences among themselves; and behaviors that isolate or intimidate minorities are being improved (Noe et al., 2010, pg. 302).

Companies continue educate their staff on affirmative action, and what it takes to manage a diverse group. These companies want to supportive workplace behaviors in the organization to help achieve the bottom line, increase stockholder value.
The majority of the global economy workforce today is very diverse that include people from multiple nationalities and different backgrounds. In order for businesses to stay competitive in the market, they need to adapt to those changes so their company can continue to grow, prosper and attain success.
