I believe the growing diversity in the U.S. does pose special challenges for law enforcement and those in the criminal justice profession. Some of the challenges is within the communities of color there is distrust of anyone in the criminal justice profession. There is a also a feeling of when there is an encounter with law enforcement it is not going to be a safe situation, especially with the shooting that have been taking place.
Because of the growing diversity law enforcement and criminal justice professionals also face language barriers and different cultures.In order to do their jobs effectively and safely, sworn and civilian law enforcement personnel must be able to communicate with the people they serve.In this regard, law enforcement
agencies should look for officers and personnel who mirror their communities. I believe their must be ongoing diversity training as you move up the ranks of law enforcement, that includes the Department of Justice down. Law enforcement agencies should also strengthen their police community relations, and increase trust within their communities. Hold community meetings, local police departments grill some hot dogs, serve donuts, meet your beat cop sort of thing. It takes time but law enforcement can be in a better positioned to address the public safety problems.

Some cities have a deep and bitter history of bias and prejudice interwoven in their past relationships. The feeling in many communities today is that the system pits law enforcement as an occupying army versus the neighborhood. One of the main reasons minority groups are underrepresented in police department is due to the negative interaction White officers have had with citizens of minority groups. There are many different reasons for the ethnic disparities in the criminal justice system between the majority and the minority, but some key reasons are differential involvement, individual racism, and institutional racism to why racial disparities exist in Institutional racism is racism that is shown through government organizations and political institutions. In a report done by David Baldus in 1998, he discovered that when it comes to the death penalty, blacks are more likely sentenced to death than whites, and those who kill whites are more likely to be given the death penalty than the killing of blacks (Touré).
The US Justice Department statistics 2003 and onwards demonstrates significant disproportion in the incarceration rate of minority African American and Hispanic men between the ages of 25 and 29 years as compared to the rate associated with White men of the same age. Bell (2007), proposes that as minority groups grow in numbers within the dominant group they will experience greater equality. However, rate of incarceration among minority males remains alarmingly high and as compared to their White counterparts. As with health care there are racial disparities that will influence outcomes when an individual is brought before the criminal courts. Additionally, there is significant correlation between a person’s level of education and the likelihood of his involvement in criminal activities. Studies and statistics have shown that among male high school dropouts there is high incidence of unemployment, low income and rate of illicit drug use as compared to men with degrees from four year colleges. Further to this, although the rate of school dropout and even arrest is not significantly different across the race lines, literature alludes that African American men have a higher rate of conviction for the same crime committed.
There is a divide between the public perception of law enforcement. Race is a recurring theme in the opinion on law enforcement. Law Enforcement officers are here to serve and protect its citizens and communities, but that is not always the case. This paper will discuss these racial perceptions, media portrayal, and what can be done to improve the relationship.
Furthermore, I do believe this is an issue that has serious implications on minorities communities. The ongoing police violence is making people see law enforcement officers as untrusted because they see that instead of these officers protecting their right to life they are the ones who violating it.
Good communication is essential to how well police officers interact with the public because it influences how the public responds to officers. Listening, speaking, writing and focusing on what others say are all ways officers can affect the way the public views them. A lack of these vital communications skills results in poor understanding, an officer not knowing how to proceed, and people who need police assistance giving up. Officers must also consider how communication might affect a community’s reaction. It is obvious that these traits are very important for optimal police work. Experiences show that people react more calmly and cooperatively when police officers treat them well. Therefore, good communication is needed in order to make the jobs of police officers easier and more positive.
