Children learn every single day about different issues in their lives. Although everyday some are not taught the right thing to do. Instead some children learn how to discriminate against other cultures. This potential discrimination can be prevented by teaching culture diversity. The best place children can learn this ideal is through church, so How can we teach culture diversity to children in church?
To begin with, I started off my research with by searching how church can influence culture. The reason why I researched this first was due to the fact that understanding how church can influence culture is important to find out how children can understand culture. If church culture can change there is a more diverse culture in the church. I chose to study this article since most children in church go to sunday school to study their religion. Through the next article Jamie Dunlop explains how a sunday school course had changed his church’s culture. Dunlop explains that a sunday school “a tool for changing a church’s culture”(Dunlop). Dunlop then explains the steps on how to use sunday school to change a church's culture. This article relates to my topic due to the fact that methods to teach people could translate from adults to children. We, as a congregation, openly exposes the congregation to different cultures from around the country though the adjustment of worship service. We visit a Jewish Rabi during Passover to get a better understanding of the importance and reverence of this festival. We are currently talking to an African American Church in our area where we will exchange pastor twice a year for a Sunday worship experience. We are working to develop a Sunday Evening worship service to meet the needs of young families who are unable to attend Sunday morning worship. We expose the people in the congregation to worship quarterly at the retirement community close to the church by going there for an afternoon worship service.
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. In today’s society, Sunday mornings have become one of the most segregated days all over the world. This common issue is due to racism. Racism is a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities, and that racial differences produce an inherit superiority of a particular race. (Meriam…2014) One of the common places that racism is portrayed is in church. The most common racial issue is “the black church versus the white church.” Each group, whether they be black or white, tends to stay to their own racial group due to the lack of social acceptance based on the color of their skin.

In an age when culture continues to lower standards of intellect, Marva Dawn makes compelling observations and suggestions for the Church to rethink its strategy on impacting society. How do we evangelize without weakening the message of what we are communicating? The majority of her text focuses on the worship environment generally, but later she focuses on music, preaching, and liturgy specifically. According to Dawn, a gathering of believers should emphasize God as the subject and object of worship, challenge each individual to grow in godly character, and accentuate the community of believers (not only in the room, but throughout history as well). Through this grid, she encourages leaders and participants to evaluate each worship element.
As an educator one must understand that the children you will be teaching will all come from different backgrounds, different ethnicities, different homes with different values. No one student will be the same, and no one student will learn the same. The role of a modern educator is to harness this idea of diversity and channel it into a positive learning atmosphere for children of all backgrounds. “I define culturally responsive teaching as using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make learning encounters more relevant to and effective for them” (Gay, 2013, p.50.). The hope for all teachers is to capture the minds of their children, as educators we must learn how our students learn, adapt to their skill set and channel our curriculum to their strength.

At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students gaining a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably than a judgmental and prejudiced view.
Sonnenberg looks at the various different components that make up the bigger picture in the community aspect in a youth worship setting; these components are looked at systematically. In the article Sonnenberg and her fellow researchers addresses four aspects which are discussed theoretically which are the following: physical presence, empathetic and emotional equality, the opportunity to cross social and ecclesiological boundaries and sharing faith (Sonnenberg, Nel, Kock, & Barnard, 2015). In the quest to address the question the importance of these four aspects the researches firstly presented the importance of each of these aspects individually, by analysing previous research and looking at the background regarding these aspects (Sonnenberg, Nel, Kock, & Barnard, 2015). Additionally the researchers observed these four aspects in a practical manner by using various methods to collect data; the data was collected through pictures, videos, field notes, small group and individual interviews and conversations and through email correspondence (Sonnenberg, Nel, Kock, & Barnard, 2015). The world is currently undergoing a cultural change, and we live in an increasingly diverse society. This change is not only affect the people in the community but also affect the way education is viewed. Teaching diversity in the classroom and focusing multicultural activities in the programs can help improve positive social behavior in children. There is no question that the education must be prepared to embrace the diversity and to teach an increasingly diverse population of young children.
Throughout my research, family values, and experiences I will be able to be accepting and understanding of the culturally diverse children that I may have in my classroom. To make my classroom a welcoming and safe environment for those who are different I want to incorporate their culture into projects, lessons and crafts. In doing this I want the class to learn more about each other and their cultural
