Why must educators understand issues of diversity and difference?
Educators must understand and recognise issues of diversity and difference amongst students to provide an inclusive learning environment. Each child brings to class a unique blend of differentiated social and cultural backgrounds, which can impact their overall success in reaching curriculum goals. Through educator’s acknowledgment of such diversity, students are given the opportunity to build a sense of identity and overcome stereotypical notions that society has created. The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) along with the Early Years Frame Work (EYLF) emphasise that equality across classroom practices is of highest priority for all children

Societal beliefs and practices give children an understanding of what is expected of them due to gender (National Union of Teachers (NUT), 2013, p.3). Examples of this can be seen with the assumptions of girls like pink and play with dolls or boys cannot like such colours or toys. This stereotypical outlook can limit career opportunities and aspiration if one believes their gender binds them to what can be achieved (NUT, 2013, p.4). Therefore, educators must counteract perceived notions of such stereotypes within the classroom to promote success in not only educational outcomes but also life outcomes (NUT, 2013, p.3). Achievement of this can occur by having students share “curriculum experiences” (MacNaughton, 2000, p. 12) whereby both sexes participate in activities that may be stereotypically defined by gender. Provisions should also be in place for providing resources that show representations of sexes carrying out roles that are not considered by society as a social norm (Hendrick, 1990, p.230 as cited by MacNaughton, 2000, p. 19). Achievement can also occur through challenging students to question the gender roles in stories (NUT, 2013, p.4). Through the recognition of gender stereotypes and making students aware that genders cannot define you, educators are can promote equality from a young age (NUT, 2013, p.26). In the text, Becoming a Teacher, the author reflects on why gender is included as a dimension of multicultural education, which is defined by Parkay (2016), “multicultural education is committed to the goal of providing all students – regardless of socioeconomic status; gender; sexual orientation; or ethnic, racial, or cultural backgrounds – with equal opportunities to learn in school” (p. 291). Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
Through the development of Inclusive Education it is possible that children grow up to be more accepting of differences, where once the notion of something “different” and “separate” could cause caution, fear and ridicule. There are multiple policies and processes present within our society supporting inclusivity and the right every child regardless of their special needs or difficult circumstances has to an education. The Salamanca Statement developed world wide in 1994 states every child’s right to an education. In support of this policy the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (1992) sets disability standards in our education system and the Melbourne Declaration (2008) further attempts to promote equity and excellence within our schools.

The modern education system in America is building up a nation of racist within our children. Educations promotion of cultural diversity and awareness is actually creating a segregated, inconsiderate, racist culture that prides itself on being racially and ethnically diverse. I decided to write about the influence of race and ethnicity on a person’s educational level. I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic where, within my social group, schooling and education was deemed as an essential part of life. In the United States, however, there exist a greater number of racial and ethnic groups, and it is evident that an achievement gap exists among these groups. Here, Dominicans are marginalized as part of a Hispanic minority group that does not achieve the educational status of other groups, such as Whites or Jewish. I chose to write about the disparity of education within races and seek to answer how race affects a person’s educational level.

One of the main issues today 's students face is the act of being given gender roles and experiencing gender bias. To further explain, "Society treats boys and girls differently and expects them to develop different gender-role identities" (87). Throughout the gender section of the book, there are several examples given on how boys and girls are divided and given gender specific roles. For instance, girls are told that “Women aren’t good at math” and boys are told “Men don’t make good nurses” (87). These stereotypes affect the thinking of the students and later become obstacles when deciding careers. One way I would promote gender equality as a teacher is by completely eliminating the use of stereotypes in my classroom.
