The modernist period is characterized by society’s attempt to break traditional norms through forms of art. An issue evident during the modernist period, and even still today, is the denigration of the female image. While women thrive to prove their potential, they continue to be portrayed as powerless. As a patriarchal society, this norm fails to be altered and continues to be present. Although there was an increase in women’s literacy at the time, some did not believe in the idea of gender equality. Though gender debates were new to modernists and early contemporary artists, Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Frida Kahlo’s The Broken Column, and The Beatles’ Run For Your Life fail to break the traditional norm. Instead, they contribute to the struggles of womanhood, portraying them as powerlessness beings.
Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary focuses on the idea that women are weak and have no control over their lives. Flaubert presents Emma Bovary as a naïve and sheltered woman due to her obsession with fairytale love stories. As a young girl, Emma dreamt of having a life filled with happiness and love. She is portrayed as uneducated and childish because she is infatuated with the idea of romance that was emphasized in novels that she grew up reading. Once she marries Charles, Emma becomes bored with her life because her marriage was nothing compared to what she expected. After attending an extravagant ball and experiencing a luxurious exciting night, Emma becomes depressed with her lifestyle because she wishes to relive that night for the rest of her life. ...nferior to women is a timeless issue that we have all experienced and witnessed. We are all connected through the norms of society. Just like I said earlier, our society was brought up revolving around the idea that men have authority over a social organization. No matter what culture, religion, race, or gender, society has forced us to experience the issues of gender. This traditional norm is definitely a hard issue to solve due to our society’s reliance on that system. If this issue was evident decades ago and continues to flourish, there’s no telling when we can solve this. Although our perception of the female image has changed compared to time of the modernists and The Beatles, it continues to affect us and probably will for a long time. We are all connected through the issues society places on us because we are all affected and influenced by society’s norms.
Throughout history, women have struggled with, and fought against oppression. They have been held back and weighed down by the sexist ideas of a male dominated society which has controlled cultural, economic and political ideas and structure. During the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s women became more vocal and rebuked sexism and the role that had been defined for them. Fighting with the powerful written word, women sought a voice, equality amongst men and an identity outside of their family. In many literary writings, especially by women, during the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s, we see symbols of oppression and the search for gender equality in society. Writing based on their own experiences, had it not been for the works of Susan Glaspell, Kate Chopin, and similar feminist authors of their time, we may not have seen a reform movement to improve gender roles in a culture in which women had been overshadowed by men.
The values and morals set by the society must be influential to the social norms. Emma Bovary’s society is dominated by the ethics established by males. In reliving their expectations, the pressure is for women to believe they must be wrong, that they are to blame and that there must be something wrong with them. Both novels are focused at a time, the nineteenth century, when the woman was unquestionably submissive to the man, otherwise, known as the era of the domestic woman. The settings for both novels give the audience insight as to why the protagonists wanted to liberate themselves from the traditional aspect of the woman. The authors also employ a healthy amount of symbolism in their work. For example, the caged birds who understand each other represent Edna and mademoiselle Reisz who are imprisoned by their communal beliefs. Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert started with a story about Charles Bovary. Nonetheless when we first met Emma Bovary, there is no doubt in my mind that she is the central character in this story. Emma Bovary was a woman who craves wealth, happiness, passion and beauty and is will to do anything it takes to acquire all that she needs. She is very intelligent but was never granted the opportunity to get as mature as she needs. Being an adult, she allows her imaginations to run wild instead of sitting down and evaluate the things thoroughly. As the famous quote states “never judge a book by its cover”, Emma is a person who views things as being perfect or otherwise by the way it looks on the outside and never took the time to see what is underneath those beautiful outer coats. The people who always appear to be misleading, those are the people she gravitates to more but loathes the very few people who are actually exactly as they appear. Being that she is a country girl she isn’t expose to certain lifestyles, so having the opportunity to experience a higher society lifestyle, she would prefer to believe that for the aristocracy, life is definitely an filled with excitement and she is willing to live it to the fullest. She has a several flaws that are motivated by her desires and hunger to escalate socially and they are results of the situations she is currently in. The passion that she showcase somewhat dominate her childhood and ultimately her life. This essay will compare and contrast two works of art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art that raise the question of the role in gender in art. The first is Edgar Degas’s, A Woman Seated Beside a Vase of Flowers painted in 1865, an oil on canvas. The second is Berthe Morisot’s, Young Woman Seated on a Sofa painted around 1879, also an oil on canvas. Both of these artworks have similarities in subject matter and composition; they both contain a seated woman and flowers. Their differences, however, make the two paintings seem like they are hardly about the same subject at all. The differences between Degas’s A Woman Seated Beside a Vase of Flowers and Morisot’s Young Woman Seated on a Sofa are indicative of not just how different Impressionists portrayed the same subject different ways, but more importantly, how the artist’s gender affects the portrayal of woman in their paintings, that male artists had a tendency to show woman in ways that suggested decoration, instead of actual entities in the world they occupied.
Madame Bovary offers a scathing indictment of the oppression of females in the nineteenth century. Emma Bovary's life is used as an example to illustrate how women's lives were circumscribed and dictated to by the men surrounding them. Emma is presented as an average woman with fantasies of love and luxury in her heart. These fantasies are never fulfilled due to her early marriage (dictated by her father) and her middle-class lifestyle (dictated by her husband). Her dreams are trapped between the wills of the two men in her life and though she tries, in her own way, to break free from them, she does not find fulfilment in her life, leading to her eventual unhappiness and demise.
The films of Minnelli and Chabrol represent two radically different approaches to Flaubert's novel. In general, Minnelli tends to romanticize the story, even sentimentalize it, making Emma much more of a sympathetic heroine than seems to be the case in Flaubert's text. Much of the ironic tone of the novel is lost. Minnelli also omits from his film all scenes which are not directly connected with Emma. The harsh realism and ironic social commentary which underlie Flaubert's novel are ignored for the most part. Madame Bovary, a novel by Gustave Flaubert, describes life in the provinces. While depicting the provincial manners, customs, codes and norms, the novel puts great emphasis on its protagonist, Emma Bovary who is a representative of a provincial woman. Concerning the fundamental typicality in Emma Bovary’s story, Flaubert points out: “My poor Bovary is no doubt suffering and weeping at this very moment in twenty French villages at once.” (Heath, 54). Yet, Emma Bovary’s story emerges as a result of her difference from the rest of the society she lives in. She is in conflict with her mediocre and tedious surroundings in respect of the responses she makes to the world she lives in. Among the three basic responses made by human beings, Emma’s response is “dreaming of an impossible absolute” while others around her “unquestionably accept things as they are” or “coldly and practically profiteer from whatever circumstances they meet.” (Fairlie, 33). However, Emma’s pursuit of ideals which leads to the imagining of passion, luxury and ecstasy prevents her from seeing the world in a realistic perspective or causes her to confuse reality and imagination with each other.
Emma's active decisions though were based increasingly as the novel progresses on her fantasies. The lechery to which she falls victim is a product of the debilitating adventures her mind takes. These adventures are feed by the novels that she reads. They were filled with love affairs, lovers, mistresses, persecuted ladies fainting in lonely country houses, postriders killed at every relay, horses ridden to death on every page, dark forests, palpitating hearts, vows, sobs, tears and kisses, skiffs in the moonlight, nightingales in thickets, and gentlemen brave as lions gentle as lambs, virtuous as none really is, and always ready to shed floods of tears.(Flaubert 31.)
Madame Bovary is Gustave Flaubert’s first novel and is considered his masterpiece. It has been studied from various angles by the critics. Some study it as a realistic novel of the nineteenth century rooted in its social milieu. There are other critics who have studied it as a satire of romantic sensibility. It is simply assumed that Emma Bovary, the protagonist, embodied naive dreams and empty cliché that author wishes to ridicule, as excesses and mannerisms of romanticism. In the story of Alice in Wonderland we follow Alice down a rabbit hole into a land of pure wonder, where the logic of a little girl holds no sway. In Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, we witness exactly the opposite as Emma Bovary, a most romantic creature, is purposely cast into a harshly realistic world. In either case, a creature is put into an environment unnatural to her disposition, yet in Flaubert’s example, Emma shares the world we inhabit, and thus the message her story brings is much more pertinent. To convey this message, Flaubert replicates not a world of fantasy, but rather the real world, with all its joy, sadness, and occasional monotony intact. Then he proceeds to dump an exaggeratedly sentimental woman, Bovary, with the training, appearance, and expectations of an heiress, into the common mire and leave her there to flounder in the reality of middle class life as a farmer’s daughter. From Madame Bovary’s reactions within this realistic situation, and from the novel’s outcome, a message is rendered concerning romanticism itself, and its misplacement in a cacophonous and uncomplimentary world.
The role women play in today’s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past. A woman’s role in today’s society is more valued than ever before.
