Firstly, the aim of health promotion in primary health care (PHC) is basically to focus on preventative healthcare from a variety of harmful causes and determinants of illnesses and to improve health (McMurray & Clenden, 2015, p. 30). It is clear that health promotion can build strengths, competencies, and resources for positive health (Leddy, 2006, p. 3). This can help people to have healthy lifestyles in physical, social and cultural environments. In contrast, the purpose of health education is different from health promotion. This is mainly to provide helpful information to obtain health knowledge for people, including health issues, and they can use this knowledge for self-management (McMurray & Clenden, 2015, p. 40). Moreover, health education is consisted as one aspect of health promotion. It can assist people to improve health literacy which is the capacity of individuals to acquire and to understand fundamental health information and services for enhancing their health habits. This can help to identify their strengths, weaknesses and inequities of community life regarding health. Secondly, the function of health promotion and health education is different. A main function of health promotion is to establish mutually interdependent relationships with individuals, communities and organizations in health (Sharma & Romas, 2008, p. 26). PHC provides wide health services such as diagnosis and treatment, health education and prevention through advertisement, written or visual resources (Ministry of Health, 2017d, para. 1). Health education is a kind of performance to carry out such a thing as a counseling session with a group of people by using diverse methods (Sharma & Romas, 2008, p. 7). Health education may have positive and negative effects for personal health. Firstly, adolescent health is important as it can influence their quality of life and it can establish educational backgrounds for health. In New Zealand, obesity in childhood rapidly increases and one of the highest rate in the world (McMurray & Clenden, 2015, p. 260, ; Teevale & Kaholokula, 2018, p. 7). Teevale and Kaholokura (2018, p. 9) explain that obesity in childhood is related to nutritional and physical activity practices of parents. In fact, New Zealand has offered the B4 School Check program in 2017. Health professional supports children and their parents to have opportunities for obtaining knowledge of healthy lifestyle (Ministry of Health, 2016b, para. 1). In addition, educators can encourage parents and schools to manage regular diets or follow nutritional guidelines, and students can build positive role models in achieving their ideal self so that they can have educational backgrounds about healthy life. Body mass index (BMI) as Arterburn et al (2008) put forward is a measure of body fat based on height and weight and further suggest that any individual with a BMI of more than 30 is considered as obese. Tannahill et al (1999) advocate that health education could be viewed as communication activity aimed at enhancing positive health and preventing ill health in individuals and groups by influencing their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour of persons with power and of the community. Butler et al (2008) defines health prevention as the measures for early detection of departure from good health. Whereas Heath (2002) concurs that the role and function of the nurse emphasise on health promotion and illness prevention, the Department of Health (2010) emphasises on the prevention of diseases, prolonging life and promoting health rather than treatment.
“Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.” ( United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 , 2011). It acts as a national guide for disease prevention and health promotion. There are various objectives and goals which serve as the guideline to achieve overall improvement in health . ‘Educational and Community-Based Programs’ is one of them. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.

A future research idea piggybacks on this program by encouraging an initiation of state and/or national legislation, specifically for change moving towards healthier school nutrition and additional school nutrition education. This legislation would also mandate increases in the amount of time children are allowed for physical activity in their school day as a lack of physical activity is a huge risk factor for overweight and obesity. Another thought is to designate a school health coordinator who will be responsible for maintaining and continuing the positive work that this study began. Utilizing the success of this program and others like it in this regards will lead to action on all levels of the social ecological framework. Ultimately, a multilevel examination of determinants and interventions needs to be aimed at preventing child overweight and obesity.
Childhood obesity has been on the rise in the last couple of years. In the 1970’s childhood obesity was never a concern to the public until the number increased over the years. An alarming rate of 31% of all adults have been obese since they were children and the rates of childhood obesity don’t fall too behind with an 18% of children being obese. That makes almost half of obese adults and children. A child that is obese has a 70-80% higher chance of staying obese even through their adulthood if no action is taken. Childhood obesity is not something children are in control of, these children suffer from different outcomes since they can’t look after themselves and heavily rely on someone to aid them when they need it. These numbers can be drastically altered in a positive way by educating both children and parents about healthy, nutritious foods to consume, supplying schools with better lunch and healthier vending machines with healthy choices and promoting after school activities to keep children active and away from electronics.
The health promotion is a key factor process of permitting people to increase control over their health status in order to improve it. It not only covers the actions directly aimed at increasing the skills and capabilities of individuals, but is also aimed at changing the social, environmental and economic issues that impact on healthy habits.
In conclusion, this essay has identified and discussed two approaches in health promotion. It also applied these approaches to a life style problem analysing the stand the health promoter takes in each approach plus the contribution individuals and communities make with emphasis on how much the strategies adopted addresses inequality. The community approach highlighted the importance of collaboration and participation in building capacity in the community while it discussed the need to conduct evaluation in both approaches. Finally policies which relate to the identified life style issue were discussed.

Childhood obesity is a growing problem not only in New Zealand but worldwide. This is due to many factors and has many effects on society. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30. BMI is a measure of your weight divided by your height, the normal range is considered to be from 18 to 25 and over 30 is said to be obese. BMI became an international standard for obesity measurement in the 1980s (S.Wilson, 2000). Obesity is not just a modern day problem, Ancient Egyptians are said to consider obesity as a disease, having been drawn in a wall of depicted illnesses. Perhaps the most famous and earliest evidence of obesity is the Venus figurines, statuettes of an obese female torso that probably had a major role in rituals. Ancient China has also been aware of obesity and the dangers that come with it. They have always been a believer of prevention as a key to longevity (L.Dobbins, Dec 2007). Obesity is considered to be a problem because it is a risk factor for many chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes. The New Zealand health strategy has two objectives that relate directly to obesity, to improve nutrition and to increase physical activity (Reuters, Feb. 15 2008). Experts and the media are feeding us with information on this ‘,obesity epidemic’, but is there actually a problem? An epidemic is the occurrence of more cases of a disease than would be expected in a community or region during a given time period. According to New Zealand Herald 95% of parents considered the number of overweight and obese children to be a significant problem. In other words there is sufficient evidence to say we do have an obesity epidemic on our hands.
