First, Silverstone and Thomas (2011) defined that self-organizing collaboration is held because of the discovery of shared purpose or interest among a group of previously unconnected individuals. Second, progressive collaboration occurs when an individual’s search grows into something larger as collaborators discover a shared need or passion and recruit others to do it. Third, remedial collaboration happens where there are some inefficiencies or gaps in formal structures or processes, which then requires problem solving teams, task forces… Lastly, oppositional collaboration is used for more attractive effort bargain or the growth of a distinctive identity based in opposition instead of trying to compensate for the shortcomings of a procedure. In my opinion, that was such a good idea when the authors classified collaboration that people could understand and apply each one into correct situation. They need to be clear to why they want collaboration because the cost of collaboration may be high. The more individuals involved, the greater cost of exercise in terms of directly facilitating meetings or the time spent away from their other duties. At the skilled nursing facility that I work at, I participate in collaboration between different professions with the shared goal of improving the outcome of the client. There is a collaborative relationship held between the house physician, the therapy unit, and the nursing staff. Cooperation is not always desirable nor is compition always to be deplored. When people are cooperative regardless of how they feel or the other person behaves, they may be exploited and taken advantage of.
Collaboration begins with networking, coordination, and cooperation and then requires team members to share decisions, responsibility, and trust. It requires that team members invest time and energy to come up with options and design strategies for carrying out these plans. Because collaboration requires lots of time and energy, it is impossible to make all decisions collaboratively. In some instances, the desired result can be achieved through networking, coordination, or cooperation. A group can only be called a team if the members are actively working together toward a common goal. A team must have the capability to set goals, make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. For a team to be successful, trust must be earned between its members by being consistent and reliable (Temme & Katzel, 2005). When more than one person is working on a particular task, inconsistent views or opinions commonly arise. People come from different backgrounds and live through different life experiences therefore, even when working towards a common goal, they will not always see eye to eye. Major conflict that is not dealt with can devastate a team or organization (Make Conflict Work, 2008). In some situations, conflict can be more constructive than destructive. Recognizing the difference between conflict that is constructive to the team and conflict that is destructive to the team is important. Trying to prevent the conflict is not always the best way to manage conflict when working within a team setting. Understanding conflict, what causes it, and how to resolve conflict effectively, should consume full concentration.
Differences within the team are the major reason for conflict. This stems from differences in opinion, attitude, beliefs, as well as cultural back grounds and social factors. The Conflict can be positive which is functional and supports or benefits the organization or a person’s main objectives (Reaching Out, 1997). Conflict is viewed as positive when the conflict results in increased involvement form the group, increased cohesion, and positive innovation and creativity. Conflict tends to be positive as well when it leads to better decisions, and solutions to long-term problems.
Likewise, the conflict should be acknowledged as soon as it is seen and prepare for the resolution. During such time, the discussion about it plays vital role towards resolving the conflict. In order to maximize team efforts, teammates must cooperate with each other and try to resolve conflict with proper and transparent communication. While resolving a conflict, it is also important for the teammates to remember why they are together in the first place and follow their best foundational strategy.

In order to explore the nature of the practice of collaboration, the author has specifically focused on some of the concepts which challenges the individuals involved in collaborative alliance. Two main concepts have been explored to justify the challenges of the individuals. They are (i) Collaborative advantage, and (ii) Collaborative inertia. There exist dilemmas between these two concepts. Both the terms create a dilemma and a question arise of – “If achievement of collaborative advantage is the goal for those who initiate collaborative arrangements, why is collaborative inertia so often the outcome.” [Huxham, C, and Vangen, S. p- 53] These two concepts draw out the reason of what is always taken as granted in collaboration and what actually happens. Such perspectives results in collaborative inertia, even if the goal is to achieve the collaborative advantage.
