Discussing Valentine and I Wouldn't Thank You for a Valentine
For this poetry assignment I will be discussing the poems “Valentine”
by Carol Ann Duffy and “ I Wouldn’t Thank You for a Valentine” by Liz
Lochhead. The poets have similar views about relationships but express
these views in contrasting ways. In order to analyse their contrasting
styles it would be beneficial to look at their backgrounds.
Carol Ann Duffy was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1955 but was brought
up in Stafford, England. She worked as a free-lance writer in East
London, and then she moved to Manchester where she currently teaches
creative writing at the Metropolitan University. Collections include
“Standing Female Nude” and “Selling Manhattan”.
Liz Lochhead was also born in Scotland in 1947. She is a well-known
Scottish poet, dramatist and performance artist. She began as a
lecturer in fine art, but became a full time writer in the 70’s.
Collections include “Memo for spring” and “The Grimm Sisters”. Both
these poets’ backgrounds and upbringings are represented as Liz
Lochhead uses Scottish dialectal words and phrases while Carol Duffy
does not. Lochhead uses words such as “auld” and “canny”. This is not
reflected in Carol Ann Duffy’s poem. This is possibly because she was
brought up in England so had forgotten the Scottish dialect.
The structure of “Valentine” by Carol Ann Duffy is not that of a
regular poem. It is written in free verse and there is no obvious
rhyme scheme or rhythm. The lines and stanzas are all completely
different and there seems to be no pattern. This gives the poem a more
personal touch and possibly shows that the poem was heartfelt and
these thoughts were written down as the poet thought them. The lines...

...ould possibly offend a female reader
is she is disapproving these ideas- when another lady may love it. For
example if a man bought his girlfriend a diamond ring and proposed ,
Liz Lochhead is rejecting this idea “If you sent me a solitaire and
promises solemn………you’d entirely fail to charm me , in fact I’d detest
it”. This may put some people off this poem if they find these things
sentimental.
I find that I relate with Carol Ann Duffy’s “Valentine” better than “
I wouldn’t thank you for a Valentine” because it has deeper meaning
and seems to be more serious and has really came from the heart. Liz
Lochhead’s poem still shows true feeling but she doesn’t present it as
well as Carol Ann Duffy. Some people may look at “Valentine” and laugh
because the poet is comparing love to an onion but when you read the
comparisons they are very true and meaningful.
Love This song is very special to me, it is not only my wedding song but, a song I always wanted to dedicate to the man I married. The lyrics are everything I’ve ever wanted to express to my husband. Here is a small verse of the song translated into English: I just wanted to tell you If you don't already know that every moment I'm thinking of you, I feel those vibrations, the language of two hearts that learned to love each other The ideal way. Our love has no end.
St Patrick’s day and St Valentine’s day differ in many ways. Valentine’s day is a day where we celebrate love and romance where all the couples get together and do things that symbol love. St Patrick’s day is a day where the irish people get together and celebrate good luck and to find the lucky pot of gold. Together these holidays differ in food , history, and different holiday activities.
The song I decided to use is, Si no Te hubieras ido by Marco Antonio Solis. In English it translates to If you hadn’t left by Marco Antonio Solis. He is a Mexican singer, musician, composer and producer. I love this song because this is the song I would listen to over and over after my grandma passed away. Her passing was hard on me because I was close to her and this song is what made it easier for me to sleep at night.
Can someone who is mentally ill truly love someone? If so, then how do they love? Is it different than how a sane person loves? I believe people who are disturbed can love another person, although it is not in the way people want to be loved. Someone who is suffering from mental illness or are mentally disturbed love in a way of obsession. They love so much that they are not able to let go of their loved ones and become deranged when they lose them. Short stories, “A Rose For Emily” by William Faulkner and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver, demonstrate how someone who is disturbed can love another.
“ Shed not for her a bitter tear; Nor give the heart to vain regret. Tis but the casket that lies here; The gem that fills it sparkles.”
Back at Battle School nine year old Ender is the top ranked soldier and a platoon leader in Phoenix Army with Petra as commander, but he hates his life. Ender still cannot get past the part of the mind game where he sees his brother's face, and he feels only despair. Graff comes to talk to Valentine because he believes Ender needs help. He asks her what makes Ender different from Peter and also if Peter is really that bad a person. Graff wants her to help Ender and convinces her to write him a letter. Valentine writes the letter and Ender reads it, but he sees through it instantly. He realizes that they must have made her write it and that it's goal was clearly to show him he is not like Peter. Therefore they must know about the mind game.
Trends in Dating Think about how your grandparents met; was it at a job they both worked at? Then think about how your parents met, through their friend group? Now, how do you plan to meet your soulmate? Over the past ten years, dating has taken a complete 360-degree turn. A study done on Americans by the Pew Research Center found, “66% of online daters have gone on a date with someone they met through a dating site or app, and 23% of online daters say they have met a spouse or long term relationship through these sites (Smith and Duggan).”
All throughout chapter nine it deals with the relationships between the siblings. Also at this time Colonel Graff is stressing out over Ender seeing the image of Peter during the fantasy game. Peter comes to Valentine and asks for her help, he has figured out that Russia is preparing for land war. He realizes that something big is happening in space and that the people on earth are preparing for its aftermath. Valentine knows that Peter can distinguish other people’s fears and manipulate them and that she can persuade people to do what she wants them to do. This makes her realize that there is also so much of Peter in her, they both manipulate in their own ways, “she enjoyed knowing that she could, in her way, control other people” (127).

Statistically females have approximately a 12% higher heart rate than males (Livestrong.com), taking into consideration of this natural differential between the sexes the averages have been calculated by the differences of initial heart rate and final heart rate. By doing so the results are able to correlate accurately against one another, demonstrating the increase/decrease of the participant’s heart rate. However, the results gathered exhibit inconsistency due to the averaging of the beats per minute between the males and females. This is as the anomalous figures of the sample skewed the results, altering the figures to be less/more significant than necessary. Evident in participant 693 whose heart rate decreased of 3 beats in the film excerpt
" What lips have my lips kissed" by Edna Millay. I totally enjoyed the description of she applied to her poem. She makes you feel like you’re the elder woman in the poem. You imagine yourself lonely and sad. You imagine how hard it hurts to be alone and no have a companion. To make mistakes and hurt yourself. Although, the character is sad she remains strong.
What is love? Love is a very special and meaningful word to each human being. Each human being has his/her own thoughts about love to guide himself/herself to land safely and smoothly into the kingdom of Love. Without this preconceived idea of love, people would be acting like a blind person searching for the light with thousand of obstacles in front of him.
