“Fight Song” by Rachel Platten addresses the topic of determination. Throughout the song she talks about rough times and the voices in her head but how she is never going to give up on life and her determination to make it better and to keep fighting. “Fight song” carries a theme of determination for everyone. With the lines “ This is my fight song”(Platten 11) The theme is first introduced because she is talking about how she is fighting from the beginning. By saying “Like a small boat in the ocean”(Platten 1) she reveals a simile, she is showing that even if it is a small boat it doesn’t mean that it can’t take on the ocean. The theme is developed more when she says “Prove I’m alright song” this fits the theme because she is determined
In many parts of the poem, Guest uses metaphors to show the strength that one should always keep while facing their troubles. He tells his readers to "Lift your chin and square your shoulders, plant your feet and take a brace" to prepare for whatever could be ahead (lines 2-3). Even through the metaphor "Black may be the clouds above you" which gives a clear perception of difficult and hopeless moments that might be surrounding an individual, it is still better than running since it "will not save you" (lines 8-11). It is throughout the poem that Guest has used many metaphors to remind his readers about the facing the problems that will lie ahead. It is even pointed at points, such as, "You may fail, but fall fighting" to remind the reader that not all problems can be confronted. However, the author suggests that with a person's body language, like standing tall, could become a resolve. With these metaphorical commands, it gives the reader the feeling of a solider or fighter that is preparing to face an enemy. This is also further emphasized from his use of repetition. Guest repeats the figurative phrase, "See it through" to show the reader to overcome the toughest or most hopeless of problems. It is also from this statement that he suggests to go keep going no matter what since in the end it is possible that one can succeed. Becoming the clearest and most encouraging phrase and title of the poem, Guest has made the distinction of his theme to overcome everything that one can in order to achieve the best for one's
Repetition is used many times in this song, especially when it states the phrase ‘ You better listen to your tribal voice’, ‘So you better get up and fight for your rights’ and ‘say c’mon, c’mon stand up for your rights’. These phrases mean a lot the writer Yothu Yindi, so by repeating them many times it means that he is trying to get you feel the same angry and fearless emotion he is, so you can take a stand and speak for what you think is wrong. Personification is also used many times to show that not just the writer wants you to feel this way but other matters are as well. Personification used in this song includes ‘the whisper of the morning light saying get up and meet the day’ and ‘walking of a rainbow dawn’ which gives human characteristics to other states of matter. Sometimes not all phrases are stated clearly that is why symbolism is used to add a different effect to people’s writing to make it more interesting and intriguing. It states in the song Tribal Voice ‘All the people in
“Rise Up” is a song written by Cassandra Monique Batieq and Jennifer Decilve. It portrays the theme of standing up and never letting go of what you believe in even if you are facing a number of obstacles. The first line of the song is, “You're broken down and tired of living life on a merry go round…” This line connects with Code Talker because Ned Begay was constantly moved from one island to another like the way the horses move on the merry go round. Not only that, Ned implied that he is sick of war and doesn’t know when it will end. In another verse, it says, “When the silence isn't quiet, and it feels like it's getting hard to breathe, and I know you feel like dying, but I promise we'll take the world to its feet.” This line shows a very relatable connection. In the book, Ned talks about the chaos in war, and how the war machinery made it hard to breathe. Death and corpses were all around him, and during that time he might have felt like he was going to die. Ned Begay and his friends kept hope, belief, and they were able to make it through. They show connection because even if the conditions get too hard, both the text and the lyrics show that you can get back up. The main chorus of the song goes like, “And I'll rise up, I'll rise like the day, I'll rise up, I'll rise unafraid, I'll rise up, and I'll do it a thousand times again.”The chorus fits perfectly with
Song lyrics have set off a great generation of our leisure time than reading poetic devices, therefore song lyrics are better than poetic devices. Song lyrics have dropped numerous lines that attach to us now a days and make us listen to the line over and over unlike poetic devices. Song Lyrics have so much meaning by word choice and by relations.”Mr. Rager” by Kid Cudi, is about people fed up with society and plan on taking a journey. “Dreams” by Edgar Allen Poe, is about a man who dreams of a greater life. Mr. Rager, the song by Scott Cudi, has a better meaning than Dreaming, the poem by Edgar Allen Poe, by personification, allusion, and symbolism.
The whole music video is in remembrance of the little girl Aiyana Jones and to show its audience the injustice it served in America (Alexis 5). The music video does not focus on the lyrics, but focuses on a whole different story. Although the music video is about the war between the government and drugs, the lyrics and the music video share a mutual message and that is to seek peace not only in the community, but also in our minds. Today, there have been issues on police brutality and unlawful arrests. This music video really illustrated different point of views of different people such as the victim and the policemen. Although the music video displayed a different message, the lyrics also provided a great message to people especially young women. Both music video and lyrics
Have you ever had a disease that has killed thousands of people worldwide have you had to give up everything to go to the hospital and give up your friday nights? I think that in the book “Drums, Girls, And Dangerous Pie”is the theme always be brave because the theme shows up in the whole book. In “Drums, Girls, And Dangerous Pie” a kid named Jeffrey is going through leukemia and is struggling to survive the battle with leukemia while his brother Steven is going through tough times at school while dealing with the stress of his parents while his dad is struggling financially.
Both “Making Sarah Cry” and “Don’t Give Up The Fight” have the similar theme of courage. In “Making Sarah Cry” Sarah uses courage to stand up to the people that bullied her and stop them from bullying a person that bullied her. In “Don’t Give Up The Fight” it shows courage by Ava staying on the team even though she was the only girl on the track team and was bullied for that. But the theme is shown differently in both the poem and in the story. The mood is different in both. The mood of “Making Sarah Cry” is a sad mood while “Don’t Give Up The Fight” has a more angry mood.
In her eulogy for Coretta Scott King, Maya Angelou uses figurative language and repetition to compel the audience to follow King’s example of peaceful yet strong advocacy of human rights.
The story “The Fourth of July” by Audre Lorde demonstrates that she comes across a realization that she had to speak up for her rights and independence when she visited the capital city of the United States, Washington, D.C. Lorde explains how she was frustrated with the situation that occurred in Washington, D.C., which shows that she had learned the reality of the society. She writes about many things that she came across during the trip to Washington D.C. in the summer vacation. In the essay, the meanings of independence for Lorde are to fight for it and to speak up for the rights that they deserve. Lorde and her family visit many places in the capital city where they were told to leave the place because black people were not allowed there.
The main meaning behind the lyrics in the song is the fact that racism still has to be dealt with in our generation. When legend sings in the chorus “one day when the glory comes, we will be sure…”, he is implying that there will be a day when discrimination comes to an end. However, that day has not arrived. Therefore, “we’ll fight on to the finish”, as legend sings in the bridge. Common, in his rap verses, includes numerous comparisons between the civil rights movements in the 1960s and the police brutality faced by African Americans today. This is imminent when he raps about Rosa Parks’ protest and then in the next line he raps about walking through Ferguson with hands up. These lines relate the past to now and how African Americans have fought for justice and equality over time. It also emphasizes the notion of nonviolent protests. Another connection between the past and present is the line that talks about one son dying and his spirit is revisiting in us. This is referring to the numerous young black men that have been victims of police brutality over the last few years and how their deaths have woken up activist groups like the Black Lives Matter movement. It is also referring to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the sense that his fighting spirit back in the 1960s is coming back for those who are fighting for justice. In fact, the lyrics make multiple allusions to King, as he was the leader of
The short story, Don’t Give Up The Fight, shares a common theme with Kathrine Switzer’s life. The theme shared is being different. In Don’t Give Up The Fight, the theme being different is shown by Ava being the only girl on the track team. The theme being different was shown in Kathrine Switzer’s life because she was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, even though people said women were not allowed and couldn’t do it. Even though Don’t Give Up The Fight and Kathrine Switzer’s life share the common theme of being different, they show it in different ways. In Don’t Give Up The Fight, Ava was discouraged and wanted to give up because she couldn’t deal with the bullying anymore. When in Kathrine Switzer’s life, she was always motivated and didn’t let what others said bother her.
In this paper I will argue about the songs, “Your King and Country Want You” and “Don’t Take My Darling Boy Away”, as they both provide the attitudes of a the British nation in regard to the war of 1914. The songs were generally use to deliver messages across the country to spread ideas and thoughts of the event, whether it be support or opposition.
“Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield has always been a song that I felt like that defines me and my attitude. The lyric “Do what you want, but you're never gonna break me/ Sticks and stones are never gonna shake me” has a meaning full tug on my heart (Bedingfield). Ever since I was young I have had people tell me, not directly, that I wasn’t good enough and I was always beaten down. I have always tried to have this attitude. I would physically say “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, so this songs meaning surely hits home with me. Another thing that stands out about this song is its upbeat music that I absolutely adore. This upbeat music lets me release my inner goofiness, as for when I hear the song I cannot help but dance around and enjoy myself. This song also has a lyric stating “The sun is on my side/ Take me for a ride/ I smile up to the sky/ I know I'll be all right” (Bedingfield). This lyric pertains to me as well for I’m one to love being outside and having a good time. From this lyric I imagine some friends and myself just riding around with the top down and enjoying the presence of each other. My group of friends all have a free spirited souls and I’m so thrilled to have them around me.
These songs made their way throughout history. People listened to these songs during protest and rallies when they wanted to feel a sense of prosperity. For example, during 2011, protesters on Occupy Wall St. scattered around the world “challenging social and economic inequality, as well as corporate greed and its influence upon government policy. The uncompromising sentiments expressed on Bob’s “Get Up Stand Up”, lyrics that are repeatedly chanted at these demonstrations, seem to have directly inspired the protesters’ dissenting stance: “Some people think a great God will come down from the sky, take away everything and make everybody feel high/but if you know what life is worth, you will look for yours on earth and now we see the light, we’re gonna stand up for our rights!””
Lyrics in a song factor more into the theme than any other portion of the song. The lyrics exist so the artist can tell a story or convey a message. For the song Happy Pharrel Williams uses his lyrics to convey a feeling of happiness to his audience. First the obvious attempted to convey happiness is the use of the word “happy” repeatedly throughout the entire song. In its entirety, the word “happy” is said exactly 70 times in the 3 minute and 53 second long song. To back up this repetition of happy other lyrics such as “Because I’m happy, clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do”, further increase happiness by sending a message of doing what a person wants to do, a certain act that is generally accompanied with happiness. (azlyrics 2013) Lyrics in a song control what the song is about and the feeling the audience has after they hear the song, and Pharrel Williams uses his lyrics to create a feeling of pure joy in his song Happy.
